Materials & Durability

For these Bedrock Sandals to claim to be hiking sandals, they had better be made of some serious materials that ensure they last after being battered on the trail. Let’s take a look at what is under the hood of these Bedrock Cairn Adventure Sandals and if they will last!

Materials

The heel strap, toe strap, and webbing straps on these Bedrock Sandals are made from polyester/nylon webbing.

The toe loop is plugless and is stitched into a Granite Grip rubber footbed which is firm and solid. The midsole is made from rubber and the outsole is XS Trek rubber Vibram sole. The adventure sandal has a thinner sole than others but this is what makes them so lightweight.

Durability

This is an incredibly rugged sandal that is 100% waterproof, especially for minimalist footwear. The rear strap is reinforced, the strap system is top of the line, and the minimalist footbed is there to last, and mold to your feet.

The midsole is made from hard rubber to handle challenging terrain without much wear and the Vibram sole is as good as you can get from a sandal.

For trail runners, hikers, backpacking trips, and mountain bike adventures, Bedrock offers the durability you are looking for with their Cairn line.

Comfort & Support

Let’s face it, if your sandals aren’t comfortable and don’t support your feet properly they are going to be sent back.

When sandals that are dubbed to be great for Cairn adventures claim, comfort and support are more important than ever. Let’s see what the Bedrock Cairn line has to offer!

Comfort

You might be thinking that being so light, thin and with such a solid footbed, midsole, and outsole, these might not be the most comfortable sandals on the planet.

Let’s start with fit. The strapping system is made from four straps that all have adjustment points and allow you to create a customized fit, and this applies to all foot types to boot! This makes finding your ideal comfort easy and you can adjust them on the fly with ease.

The strap system also ensures zero drop so the sandals stick to your foot on uneven terrain and the open-ness of the sandal provides maximum breathability like a flip flop. Your feet will never sweat or overheat in these, within reason.

The hard footbed and sole make this sandal great at protecting your feet from the likes of sharp rocks and uneven trails.

Overall, with the right adjustments and size you will be comfortable in these sandals no matter where you are or what you’re doing, provided it is not in the snow but wet rocks are fine.

Support

These sandals are not known for their arch support considering there is no real cushioning built into them. But, the flat footbed and midsole, despite being quite rigid, will provide some good support after a bit of molding.

After wearing these sandals for a few weeks, they will begin to conform to your feet and provide some support. Something that truly is missing is both arch support and some shock absorption while you wear them.

Overall, the Cairn Adventure Sandal is solid when it comes to both comfort and protection in our eyes. They are comfy and protective enough for rugged terrains and the only type of footwear that would beat them are real shoes!

Grip & Stability

The next thing a so-called adventure sandal needs to have is great grip that provides excellent stability.

When hiking over slipper rocks, on sand, across rocks, and other tough trails, you are going to need some good traction and stability.

Grip

I am a huge fan of the Vibram XS Trek outsole on these sandals. The sole is built from tough rubber and has a tread pattern that just screams grip. The deep treads ensure your feet will stay put, not simply slip in wet conditions or loose surfaces.

The footbed also features a micro-diamond pattern to ensure your feet stay stuck from the top, as you can slip from the top and bottom. This is particularly important when the footbed is wet and the grip is also aided by the adjustability of the straps.

So long as you adjust the straps properly, the sandals will stay firm on your feet while the soles ensure you grip all surfaces.

Stability

These sandals offer stability in one way but lack it a lot in another. The custom fit and the way these sandals hug your feet and the ground provide some stability, but it is almost the same as walking with bare feet.

The wings do help by hugging your instep via the straps which provide some added stability when in tough terrains. But, this doesn’t mean they are super-stable!

The main issue with these when it comes to stability is the flip-flop style thong at the front as your feet naturally slide up and down whether you are ascending or descending.

Overall, when adjusted correctly for a customizable fit, these sandals provide enough stability for purpose but you can find some more supportive and stable options on the market.

Style

One great thing that gets these huge style points is that they only work with toe socks, meaning socks and sandals vibes are out of the picture. Thank God! I kid, of course, but you will have to buy some toe socks if you want to wear socks with these.

These sandals don’t scream style in any way in my eyes. They are good quality workhorses that are for things like stream crossings and a tough trail, not for wearing to dinner with a dress or chinos.

Versatility

Versatility is where these Bedrock Sandals really shine. They’re ready for anything grippy sole combined with their secure adjusting straps and the grippy footbed is made for all terrains, bar ice maybe.

The lighter weight of these sandals combined with their small profile makes them highly portable too.

You can literally wear these anywhere from on boats to paddle boards, hiking in the mountains, across streams, and strolling to your local coffee shop too!

Overall, these are hard sandals to beat when it comes to versatility as they are ready for most sports, conditions, and environments.

Value For Money

The Cairn Sandal retails for around $115 which doesn’t put them in the affordable bracket when it comes to sandals. But, when you consider what you are getting for your money, value starts to appear.

Considering their build quality, durability, and versatility to be used anywhere, these are some sandals that will be with you for a while and you can use them pretty much everywhere.

If you are looking for some sandals to be active in that are also great for hanging at the beach, these are worth the money.

Rating

With a rating of 84/100, the Cairn Sandals have scored exceptionally well on our rating system beating all the other sandals we have reviewed in the past.

The only categories they lost some points in are arch support and stability.

That is not to say they don’t provide any at all, they are actually great for most foot types and most unstable terrains, but when pushed to the limit, they show their cons a bit.

Verdict

Overall, the Bedrock Cairns Sandals are hard to beat if you are looking for some multi-sport sandals.

Their slim, tough, and durable design is of note. When you combine this with their grip-to-anything Vibram sole and footbed, adjustment to fit straps, and overall comfort, versatility, and support, they are awesome.
