The July Classic Family Luggage set includes three suitcase sizes – a 21” carry-on, a 26” medium checked case, and a large 30” suitcase. I really like that the carry-on is under 22” tall with wheels and handles, because it means that you can use it for international trips without worrying you’ll be forced to check it at the gate.
Another thing I like about this luggage set is that the suitcases nest inside each other, for easy storage. Instead of having to find space to store three different suitcases, you just need to find a spot where you can store the largest piece of luggage.
The cases in the luggage set all have the same features, with one exception. The carry-on suitcase has an ejectable power bank and this feature is not included in the checked bags because it wouldn’t comply with TSA regulations for batteries.
All the July Classic luggage is made from durable polycarbonate and features reinforced corners for the absolute best durability and impact resistance. The suitcases are also equipped with the brand’s proprietary Silent Move double spinner wheels, a height-adjustable wheel handle, YKK zippers, and TSA-friendly locks.
The interior of these suitcases is fully lined and features a hidden compression bag for dirty laundry. All the luggage is lined with water-resistant and stain-proof nylon, plus each of the suitcases features July’s Y-straps for compression.
Coolife is a budget luggage brand and this set is a good option for families on a tight budget who can’t really afford the luggage sets with $800+ prices. The suitcases in this luggage set are all made from ABS plastic, a material that is often used in the manufacturing of affordable luggage because it’s the cheapest type of plastic.
ABS is lightweight and has good scratch resistance, but not the best impact resistance. The material is perfectly fine for carry-on luggage – I’ve owned an ABS carry-on for more than five years, and it’s still going strong.
I just wouldn’t recommend checking ABS suitcases often because the plastic will crack if it lands badly. It also doesn’t help that the Coolife suitcases have no reinforcements on the corners.
Other than that, this is a solid luggage set. All suitcases feature single spinner wheels, a telescopic wheel handle, and a TSA-friendly lock. The interior of Coolife luggage is fully lined, with a zippered divider at the top and elastic cross straps at the bottom.
Another important thing to note is that you actually have two options for this luggage set- you can choose from a three-piece set and a four-piece set. The four-piece set includes an extra 16” carry-on, which could be a good option for children and teens. All sets include a 20” carry-on, a 24” medium case, and a 28” large checked suitcase.
Away is a relatively young but very popular luggage brand. The company was founded about a decade ago, and it quickly became very popular because of the quality materials and innovative features of its luggage. Away suitcases might be pricey, but they’re excellent quality and worth the money.
This luggage brand also has an excellent returns policy that allows you to send back any unused luggage in the first 100 days from the date of purchase. This is awesome because you can buy a suitcase, try it out at home and see if you like using it, and then just keep it if you like it or send it back if you’re not impressed.
Away offers discounts on luggage sets, and they allow you to mix and match luggage sizes to create the best set for you. You can get a two-piece set or a three-piece set, but it’s important to note that you won’t get a discount if you want to buy multiple suitcases of the same size.
The best luggage set from Away is the one that includes the Carry-On, the Medium, and the Large. It will cover all your luggage needs for a while, and this carry-on is small enough for international travel as well.
All Away luggage is made from durable polycarbonate (except for a few aluminum options), and it features double-spinner wheels, a TSA-friendly lock, and internal pockets. None of the Away luggage available for purchase as part of the set has an expandable capacity.
The Winfield luggage set is the one I would recommend to most people. It’s from Samsonite so you already know that it’s durable and well-made, but it’s also surprisingly affordable for this brand. At the moment of writing this, the set is retailing for about $600, and it’s even cheaper on Amazon.
That’s a really good price for three high-quality suitcases, especially if they’re made by Samsonite. The Winfield luggage is manufactured from durable polycarbonate, and it’s equipped with single spinner wheels, a TSA-friendly lock, and a height-adjustable wheel handle. The suitcases also feature an expandable capacity with a couple of pockets inside the luggage.
One downside of the Winfield cases is that the exterior is smooth and shiny, so any scuffs and scratches are going to be visible. But you can easily solve that problem by putting a luggage cover on the suitcase to protect it from scratches and to make it look new for longer.
Also, it’s worth noting that there’s only one set with 23”, 27”, and 31” suitcases. You can’t mix and match sizes, so if you’re not happy about one of the suitcases in this set, it’s better to avoid buying it. Another thing to mention is that it’s currently possible to choose from two options for two-piece sets on Amazon, both of which include a carry-on and either a medium or a large checked case.
The Travelers Club luggage set is one of the most affordable luggage sets, and a good option if you don’t need too many pieces of luggage. Although this is a four-piece set, it only includes two suitcases – a 20” carry-on, and a 28” medium checked bag. The other two pieces of luggage are an underseat bag and a small tote for toiletries.
The two suitcases are made from ABS plastic so they’re not the most durable options out of the bunch, but they do have some redeeming qualities. They both have corner reinforcements for better impact resistance, but it’s important to note that this feature is reserved for the corners in the front.
The Travelers Club suitcases also feature spinner wheels, a telescopic wheel handle, and an expandable capacity. On the inside, the suitcases are fully lined and feature elastic cross-straps at the bottom and a full-panel divider at the top. It’s important to note that none of these suitcases have any locks.
The other two pieces of luggage are soft-shell and made from polyester. The boarding tote is 10” and it’s just the right size for an underseat bag. It is surprisingly spacious inside, plus it features a few external pockets so you can keep some items more easily accessible. The toiletry bag is the smallest of the bunch and it easily fits inside the suitcases for good organization.
The Showkoo 4-piece luggage set is another affordable option suitable for family travelers on a tight budget. This is most similar to the Coolife luggage set in the design of the suitcases, the sizes of luggage in the set, and the price point. However, the Showkoo suitcases are made from a mixture of ABS and Polycarbonate, so they’re a slightly more durable option.
They’re still not as impact-resistant as cases made from pure PC, but they’re certainly more durable than luggage made from ABS plastic. Also, the Showkoo suitcases feature double-spinner wheels, TSA-friendly locks, and telescopic wheel handles.
This set includes four suitcases – two carry-ons (16” and 20”) and two checked cases (24” and 28”). That’s plenty of variety for both kids and parents and enough luggage to get you through some longer trips. I would be a bit vary about checking the larger cases, but they’re likely to get damaged only if you’re a very frequent flyer. For a couple of trips per year, these can work just fine.
Another great thing about the Showkoo luggage is that all the suitcases feature expandable capacity. The interior of the luggage is fully lined and features elastic cross straps at the bottom and a full-panel zippered divider at the top. There are also a couple of zippered pockets inside, for easier organization.
The Larvender set includes five pieces of luggage at a very affordable price. You get three carry-ons (14”, 18”, 20”) and two checked pieces of luggage (24”, 28”). The smallest carry-on is a cosmetics case, and it’s the only piece of luggage in the set that does not feature wheels or a telescopic handle.
The cosmetic case has a trolley sleeve in the back, so you can easily mount it on top of a larger suitcase, plus it comes with grab handles and a removable shoulder strap.
The other four suitcases are all equipped with double-spinner wheels, adjustable wheel handles, TSA-friendly locks, and an expandable capacity. The Larvender luggage is manufactured from lightweight ABS plastic, so the suitcases have good scratch resistance, but not the best impact resistance.
On the inside, the suitcases are all fully lined and feature a zippered divider at the top and elastic cross-straps at the bottom. There are two zippered pockets inside each suitcase, for easy organization of all your smaller items.
One important thing to note about the Larvender family luggage set is that you’ve got a lot of options when it comes to the sizes and types of luggage included in the set. It’s possible to get sets with two, three, four, and five pieces of luggage, so it should be pretty easy to pick up the option that’s the best fit for your family.
Rockland is a popular budget luggage brand known for affordable prices and decent-quality luggage. Their suitcases are great and I generally don’t recommend them as checked luggage for air travel, but if you need suitcases for road trips, train travel, or just carry-ons, Rockland luggage is good value for money.
This four-piece luggage set includes three softshell suitcases and a small underseat tote. The tote is 14”, and the suitcase sizes are 19”, 24”, and 28”. The small tote doesn’t have any wheels or telescoping handles, instead, it features just the grab handles and a removable shoulder strap.
The three suitcases in this set are all equipped with in-line skate wheels. They’re not the easiest cases to maneuver, but this does mean that you get more packing space. In-line wheels allow for the actual case of the luggage to be larger, so you can fit more items inside.
The Rockland Journey luggage features an expandable capacity and two external zippered pockets. The interior of these suitcases is fully lined with tie-down straps in the packing compartment and zippered pockets in the lid.
Also, I must mention that the Journey suitcases feature a grab handle at the bottom, which is very helpful for picking up the luggage and placing it in the overhead bin or just the trunk of your car.
Another thing to note about these affordable suitcases is that they don’t have TSA-friendly locks. They all come with small padlocks, but honestly, the padlocks are pretty much toys and don’t guarantee the safety of the luggage contents.
The American Tourister luggage set is an affordable option good for families on a tight budget. If you need multiple pieces of luggage for an upcoming trip but you can’t afford to spend hundreds of dollars on suitcases, consider the Pop Max set.
I will say that this is a soft side luggage set so it’s not the most durable option out of the bunch, I don’t necessarily recommend it for air travel because there’s a chance it would get damaged in transport (especially the larger checked bags), but it’s definitely a solid option for train travel and road trips.
The set includes a 21” carry-on suitcase, a 25” medium checked bag, and a 29” large checked suitcase. All the luggage in this set features spinner wheels, an expandable capacity, and a telescopic wheel handle for easy maneuvering.
The interior of these suitcases is spacious and fully lined, with tie-down straps. There’s a large zippered pocket in the lid, as well as a couple of external pockets on each of the suitcases in the Pop Max set. Overall, the American Tourister luggage set is a great option for families who can’t afford the likes of Samsonite and Away, especially for road trips, train travel, and carry-ons.
The Helium Aero luggage set is an excellent option. Delsey is comparable to Samsonite in quality, and they have a long-standing tradition. The Helium Aero luggage is manufactured from polycarbonate, so it is lightweight and exceptionally durable.
That’s why this set is great if you need multiple pieces of checked luggage. This particular set includes a 25” medium checked bag and a 29” large checked bag, as well as a 19” carry-on. The carry-on is honestly my favorite suitcase in this set because it’s sized for international travel and it features an easily accessible external pocket.
One thing to note about the Helium Aero luggage set is that it’s available in a few different varieties. You can choose from several options for both two-piece and three-piece sets, so there’s bound to be at least one combination that’s suitable for you.
Other features of this Delsey Paris luggage include double spinner wheels, a height-adjustable wheel handle, an expandable capacity, and a TSA-friendly lock. The interior is split in two with elastic-cross straps at the bottom and a full-panel zippered divider at the top but without any pockets.
Materials can quite literally make or break a piece of luggage, so make sure that you’re choosing suitcases made from the best materials.
I generally recommend hardside suitcases for checked luggage because they are more durable and have better impact resistance than softsides. Look for luggage made from polycarbonate if you want high-quality suitcases that are flexible and have excellent impact resistance. Also, look for luggage with corner reinforcements because it’s even more durable.
On the other hand, softside luggage is my preferred option for carry-ons. Softshell luggage usually features external pockets that allow you to keep certain items easily accessible at all times, plus it often has a more generous capacity than hardshell luggage. Softsides are also easier to deal with if you tend to overpack.
How many pieces of luggage do you need, and how big do they have to be? Are you looking for a simple set that includes a carry-on and a checked bag, or would you like a more elaborate set that comes with multiple large suitcases, a carry-on, and even an underseat bag?
It’s very important that you choose luggage that is a good size for the length of trips you normally take. Carry-ons are best for trips of up to 5-7 days, medium-size suitcases can work for trips of up to two weeks, while large suitcases are suitable for trips that are longer than two weeks.
However, that’s true only if it’s one person packing inside the luggage; if you’re using one suitcase to pack items for your entire family, split those numbers in half.
I’ve included lots of sets here, and in most cases, there are a few different suitcase size combinations for each of the sets available.
If you’re still not entirely sure which luggage set would work best for your family, consider one of my top picks depending on your priorities for a luggage set.
The Delsey Helium Aero luggage set is one of the best options in terms of quality, durability, and value for money. It’s been around for several years so the price has dropped significantly. The set includes three very sturdy polycarbonate suitcases with spinner wheels, TSA-friendly locks, and expandable capacities. This luggage set will last you years to come and includes enough pieces for three family members.
The Samsonite Winfield luggage set is another excellent option for families who want long-lasting luggage. The luggage features a durable polycarbonate shell, smooth spinner wheels, and a TSA-friendly lock on every suitcase. You also get expandable capacity and internal pockets, for easy packing and organization.
The American Tourister luggage set is the best option for families on a tight budget. It includes three softside suitcases, all of which are equipped with spinner wheels, an expandable capacity, and a telescopic wheel handle. The suitcases also have several internal and external pockets, for effortless organization.

Yes, luggage sets are worth buying for family travel because it’s usually cheaper to buy a set than multiple individual pieces of luggage.
Ideally, a family should bring one carry-on and one checked bag per person when traveling. This, of course, is the standard for longer trips overseas. Just a carry-on per family member can suffice for short trips, and it’s possible for two adults to pack inside one large checked suitcase for trips of 7-10 days.
A mix of softshell and hardshell luggage is likely the best option for families. Consider traveling with softshell carry-ons, so that you have easily accessible front pockets where you can store passports, boarding passes, in-flight entertainment, etc. Go with hardshell suitcases for checked luggage because it’s the more durable option.
