The dome pushes the water out and away from your camera lens to make these shots possible. It’s a cool accessory to have, but it does take some practice.

GoPro makes a lot of excellent accessories for their action cameras. Unfortunately, the Dome port is not one of them. Nevertheless, here are some of the best GoPro domes you can buy for your next underwater adventure!

Best GoPro Domes

Best Casual Use

PolarPro FiftyFifty Dome

PolarPro FiftyFifty Dome for GoPro Hero6 / Hero5 Black

The PolarPro FiftyFifty is a new addition to PolarPro’s excellent line of accessories. The port is designed to be user-friendly and is fairly easy to assemble. Out of the box, it comes with the dome port made out of glass, a floating grip, a protective cover, a wrist lanyard, and anti-water drop wipes. For under $50, it’s also a great accessory to have.

You don’t need any other extra accessories to use this dome. You don’t even have to remove the GoPro from its original lens cover. Simply turn the outer rim to loosen the glass and remove the Dome lens. It’s a great way to clean the lens of both the GoPro and remove any moisture or droplet inside the Dome.

Once you’re ready to put it back on, make sure you do so tightly to prevent any water leakage.

The floating handle attaches to the bottom of your GoPro housing. Once you insert the Dome onto the GoPro lens, you’re ready to go.

It’s a straightforward accessory that you simply attach and bring into the water. The Dome is made of glass, however, so much care is needed when storing it.

Pros

  • Easy installation
  • Easy maintenance
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Prone to water droplets
  • Glass Dome needs extra care in storage

Vicdozia Telesin 6" Dome Port Lens

Vicdozia Telesin Dome Port Lens Compatible with GoPro Hero 7 Black, Hero 6, Hero 5 Black, Hero(2018) Waterproof Housing Case Hand Floating Grip Trigger Transparent Cover Underwater Diving Photography

The Vicdozia Telesin 6″ Dome Port makes shooting under/over photos a bit more fun. With its bright yellow accents and pistol trigger design, taking photos and videos become a tad bit easier.

The package includes a lot of paraphernalia. The dome is made of PC+Acrylic material which makes the dome cheaper and less prone to breakage. The dome attaches to the rim with screws for extra security, but it also means a bit of inconvenience when cleaning the dome. There is a wrench included for you to remove and replace the screws.

A floaty bobber with a wrist strap serves as a handle. The bottom unscrews to serve as storage for small items. It also includes a pistol trigger for you to take your shots. When you pull the trigger, a lever pushes down that presses the button on your GoPro. There are anti-fog inserts to keep moisture from building up inside the dome, but it doesn’t get rid of water droplets on the outside. There’s a clean cloth as well to wipe the dust off and a protective bag made of neoprene protects the dome when in storage.

The handle attaches to your GoPro housing without any adapters. It also comes in different sizes to accommodate GoPro 4/3+ and 3, and GoPro Session.

The unit is fairly affordable, but the materials used feel flimsy to the touch. Something about the material also does a poor job in keeping water off, and fast-moving objects tend to look blurry with the dome.

Pros

  • Comes in different sizes
  • Fun configuration
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Not as vivid or clear as higher-end Domes
  • Feels flimsy

Product Information

  • Compatibility: GoPro 4/3+ 3, GoPro Hero 5/6, GoPro Session
  • Dimensions: 8.6 x 7.6 x 5.7 inches
  • Product Weight: 1.87 pounds

GoPole Dome H5

Dome for GoPro HERO7/6/5 Black Cameras

The GoPole Dome comes in H5, which is compatible with GoPro Hero5 Black, and the H4, which is compatible with the Hero4 and Hero3/3+. It’s a fairly new product but made by one of the most trusted GoPro accessory brands.

Off the market, this is a bit more expensive than the PolarPro and Vicdozia options. Out of the box, it becomes even more expensive as it only includes the Dome, a waterproof housing, a thumbscrew, and a soft travel bag. It doesn’t include any grip whatsoever, but can be attached to any GoPro compatible grip and accessory. It even has provisions to attach a Trad Grip for stability or for shooting underwater photos.

The clarity and vividness of the photos are good and topnotch. However, there are several inconveniences with this unit. The Dome is attached via screws, which makes it very secure especially when used in rough waters or underwater. However, there are no screwdrivers included.

The whole unit is solidly built and the clarity of the Dome is great for any kind of water condition. Unlike the Vicdozia, the GoPole Dome H5 can capture high-speed movement pretty well. It’s a fairly expensive accessory to have given that you still have to buy the extras separately, but it’s a good Dome to have for more serious photographers and videographers.

Pros

  • Solidly Built
  • Captures fast movement clearly
  • Can be used with several attachments

Cons

  • Does not come with any grips or extra perks out of the box
  • Inconvenient screw attachment
  • Relatively expensive

Product Information

  • Compatibility: GoPro Hero 6/Hero 5 for Dome H5, GoPro 4 and 3/3+ for Dome H4
  • Dimensions: 4.5 x 6 x 6 inches
  • Product Weight: 1.26 pounds

Best For Pros

KNEKT KSD6ss Dome Port

On the higher-end of the spectrum is the KNEKT KSD6ss for the GoPro Hero 5 and the KSD6 for the Hero 3+/4. It sells at a whopping $250, which may seem quite a lot of money, but it does have some great characteristics to justify the price.

KNEKT created the first production GoPro Dome ports before any other brand realized it’s going to be a cool accessory to have. The port is made of marine-grade stainless steel and anodized aluminum that guarantees ultimate durability in the harshest environments. Given the price, this Dome will also last you for years to come.

The only thing you’ll get out of the box is the dome port itself. It’s not built for casual users – much work and technology went into the port to correct the complexity of focus, exposure, and depth of field. The result is a dome port with nearly infinite depth of field, a wide-angle lens, and video/still image clarity.

The port is slid over the GoPro Super Suit Housing and is locked in by a two-piece design to create an O-ring compression seal.

Given this design, the KNEKT can actually be used on its own without any grips. However, it is compatible with the KNEKT FPSH Pole, KDT Dive Trigger, and KTP18ss Trigger Pole, or attach your GoPro housing to any existing grip you have. The best part? The dome port is waterproof up to 135 feet and can be an excellent camera accessory for SCUBA diving.

Pros

  • Can be used in harsh conditions
  • Waterproof up to 135 feet
  • Lens is calibrated for excellent photos and videos

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Does not include any other paraphernalia

Product Information

  • Compatibility: GoPro Hero 6/Hero 5 for KSD6ss, GoPro 4/3+ for KSD6
  • Dimensions: 6.8 x 6.5 x 4.5 inches
  • Product Weight: 1.52 pounds

Most Versatile

SHOOT 6" Underwater Dome

SHOOT Official 3.0 Dome Port for GoPro Hero 7 Black/ 6/5/HERO(2018) Camera- Waterproof Case, Floating Grip for Underwater Photography Scuba Diving Accessories

The SHOOT 6″ Underwater Dome is an easy-to-use Dome port compatible with the GoPro Hero 6 and 5. It comes with the dome, a floaty handle, waterproof housing, anti-fog inserts, and a travel bag. You’re free to use your own waterproof housing, which can be attached with 2 silicone rubbers included in the pack to ensure water tightness.

The SHOOT Dome is waterproof for up to 30meters, which means it’s ideal for SCUBA Divers up to Advanced Open Water Certification. The Dome itself is made of PC, ABS material, which means it’s durable but not too sensitive to bumps and pressure.

Installation is a bit cumbersome. You have to unscrew the bottom and lift the dome so you can place your camera inside. Then again, this method is necessary to keep water from leaking especially when used in deep waters.

There are several attachments you can purchase separately. The most useful one is the Dome Hood, which is an attachment over the dome to reduce lens flare. You can also attach the dome to a tray grip or add kangaroo lights for better footage underwater.

For all its functionality, the SHOOT Dome is fairly affordable. You do have to separately buy all the other attachments to maximize this product’s potential, but on its own, it’s already a very reliable dome.

The product is covered with a 12-month warranty for worry-free purchases.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Versatile when used with additional attachments
  • Waterproof till 30meters

Cons

  • Difficult installation
  • No attachments included

Product Information

  • Compatibility: GoPro Hero 6/Hero 5
  • Dimensions: 8.3 x 4.3 x 7.1 inches
  • Product Weight: 1.81 pounds

What to Look For?

Compatibility

Dome ports come in different sizes, depending on the GoPro version you have. It’s not a one-size-fits-all accessory, so make sure you’re getting the right size.

Accessories

Some Dome ports come with a lot of accessories while others come with none. This may or may not be a dealbreaker, especially if you already have lots of accessories, to begin with, and won’t need the extra clutter.

Waterproof Depth

Not all Domes are meant to be taken underwater. The screw-on Domes are safer to take to deeper depths, but snap-on domes are better left within swimming or snorkeling level.

Quick tips on using a Dome

Lighting

The Dome, given its shape and material, bounces off the light and lets more light into the GoPro lens. Photos tend to look too bright or overexposed. A quick solution is to take photos with the sun behind you. That way, there’s no direct light pointing into your camera. If you shoot under direct sunlight, there’s no way of getting rid of lens flare.

Framing

Framing is a tricky thing especially since you want to capture both under and over water. If you can, practice in a pool to get used to the shots and experiment with the different angles you can use. Changing the Field of View settings on Photo and Video modes can also help in getting the right framing that you prefer.

Water Spots

Water spots can ruin any photo, and it’s still possible to get them with the Dome. Rubbing anti-fog solution or hydrophobic coating can help water beads slide off the dome. Make sure you rub it gently to avoid scratching the Dome.

Maintenance

The Dome port is an extension of your camera, so make sure it’s as clean and maintained as your GoPro. As soon as you’re done filming in saltwater, wash the dome off with clean water to keep the salt from eroding your Dome and all the parts. Saltwater spots are also very difficult to remove, so washing with fresh water will keep them from staining.

Make sure that the Dome is completely dry and free of moisture before storing the Dome. Again, this prevents parts from corroding or leaving spots on the Dome. Store in its included cover or case to prevent scratches and breakage.

Which GoPro Dome Is The Best For You?

GoPro Domes are fun accessories to have, but some can do much more than just under/over water photos.

For casual users who simply want to take new cool photos, the PolarPro FiftyFifty is a good option. It functions well, takes clear photos, comes with the necessary accessories, and is on the affordable end of the spectrum.

PolarPro FiftyFifty Dome for GoPro Hero6 / Hero5 Black
  • Designed specifically for the GoPro Hero5 Black (only fits Hero5 Black)
  • Includes FiftyFifty dome, floating grip, lanyard & neoprene cover

Those looking for a bit more flexibility, the SHOOT 6″ Underwater Dome is a highly versatile unit. On its own, it delivers what all Domes deliver, but can be made even more functional with cool accessories and attachments.

Hardcore photographers and videographers should go for the KNEKT KSD6ss Dome. It’s highly reliable, can handle all kinds of water and weather conditions, and is made with the best materials that can take water pressure and abuse. Clarity and depth of field are also topnotch and will capture any kind of video and still image.
