Materials & Durability

Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket - Warm Puffy Camping Blanket, 100% Recycled Polyester Insulation, Lightweight, Packable, Water-Resistant, Outdoor Puffer Blanket, 52'x75', Rocky Mountain Fade

All the Rumpl Puffy Blankets are made from post-consumer recycled polyester. The brand even tells you how many plastic water bottles went into the making of your blanket – it’s about 50 for a one-person blanket and some 100 for a two-person blanket, depending on the insulation.

It’s always great when a company is doing its share to rid the world of plastic waste, but sustainability is certainly not the only reason to support Rumpl. 30D Ripstop Polyester is a very durable material with great water and abrasion resistance. It’s used in a variety of other camping gear as well, mostly because of its excellent performance in changing weather conditions.

It’s worth noting that Rumpl manufactures indoor blankets as well, which are made from a variety of other materials. But, even their sherpa throw blanket is made from post-consumer recycled materials, which says a lot about their sustainability efforts.

Insulation

Insulation is the one feature that varies between the different Rumpl puffy blankets. Each blanket is insulated with a different material, which ultimately affects its price points and weight, so deciding which insulation is best for you will help you figure out which Rumpl blanket to buy.

It’s worth noting that Rumpl blankets are not temperature rated, but they should keep you warm in 45° (Fahrenheit) weather. The type of insulation impacts the weight more than it impacts the warmth of the blanket.

Original Puffy Blanket

The Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket is insulated with 100% recycled 3D hollow fiber synthetic insulation. The insulation is manufactured from post-consumer recycled materials, which is one of the factors that impact the pricing of the blanket.

It’s worth noting that this is the heaviest of the three blankets, but it’s by no means more or less warm than the other ones.

NanoLoft Puffy Blanket

The NanoLoft Puffy Blanket is insulated with Nanometer high-elastic cloth with soft nap. This is recycled synthetic down, so the material was manipulated to mimic the performance of down insulation.

It manages to do so very well. This blanket is lighter than the original one while being equally warm, and it still performs well in wet weather, which is something down insulation doesn’t do very well. It’s also nearly twice as expensive as the Original lightweight blanket, so keep that in mind.

Down Puffy Blanket

The Rumpl Down Puffy Blanket is insulated with 600 fill power duck down. It’s the lightest of all the camping blankets they make, and it’s easily the best outdoor blanket for dry weather. Down insulation usually doesn’t perform that great in wet weather because clusters of down tend to clump up if they get wet.

This reduces how effective they are at trapping heat, so the blanket isn’t as warm until it entirely dries. The good news is that the blanket has a DWR coating, so it will take a while before the insulation gets soaked.

The down blanket is also the most expensive option, but that makes sense because down is the priciest type of insulation to the source.

Size & Weight

Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket - Warm Puffy Camping Blanket, 100% Recycled Polyester Insulation, Lightweight, Packable, Water-Resistant, Outdoor Puffer Blanket, 52'x75', Geo

A good outdoor blanket should be lightweight enough that you don’t feel the burden of carrying it in your preferred hiking backpack. The Rumpl is lightweight, but there is some variance among the different versions and sizes of the blanket, which is what we’ll explore in more detail in this section.

Size

All the Rumpl blankets featured in this review are available in at least two sizes. The standard size for a one-person blanket is  52” x 75”, and all the blankets are also available in a two-person size measuring 84” x 80″.

It goes without saying that the two-person blanket is both heavier and pricer than a one-person blanket.

The Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket is also available in a Junior size, which is ideal for the youngest campers. The junior blanket measures 28” x 40”, and it’s the perfect size for kids. It’s worth noting that its packed size is almost half the regular blanket, so your kids can carry it in their own camping backpacks!

Packed Size And Portability

One of the things that makes Rumpl blankets so popular among their campers is how tiny they are when packed. They come with a stuff sack that easily fits into travel and hiking backpacks, plus they’re extremely lightweight.

It’s worth noting that the brand also makes travel-sized blankets, which are even more portable. They are smaller, measuring 38” x 52”, but these blankets are no bigger than a water bottle when packed, which makes them perfect for campers who are counting every single gram.

Weather Resistance

Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket - Warm Puffy Camping Blanket, 100% Recycled Polyester Insulation, Lightweight, Packable, Water-Resistant, Outdoor Puffer Blanket, 52'x75', Rocky Mountain Fade

Every Rumpl Puffy Blanket features a DWR coating that increases its overall water resistance. The blankets aren’t entirely waterproof, but they are very water-resistant and they will stay dry in some light rain. You can use the blanket to shield yourself from changing weather conditions, but you shouldn’t stay out in the rain too long, otherwise, the blanket might start to get soaked.

Other Features

The Rumpl blankets have a couple of other features that are worth mentioning, such as the corner loops and the cape clip.

The corner loops let you stake the blanket into the ground, which is great for use in windy conditions. You can also use them with Rumpl’s Everywhere Mat – the two items combined are practically a sleeping bag replacement, and they’re a great thing to have for comfortable camping.

The Cape Clip is a convenient little feature that pretty much allows you to wear this blanket like a cape. You tie the clip above your chest, and you’re covered with the blanket until you undo the clip. It’s great for cozying up on a chilly evening, and it’s also a creative way of transporting the blanket.

Value For Money

Value for money is a bit tricky because it truly depends on the blanket model. The Original Puffy Blanket is worth every penny without a doubt – you’re getting a premium outdoor blanket that’s warm, water-resistant, and weighs just 2 lbs. Also, it packs into a small sack that will comfortably fit inside any outdoor blanket.

The other two blankets are a lot pricier than the original one, so it’s not quite as easy to say that they’re entirely worth it. But there’s some reasoning behind the price point, and if you’re someone who goes camping a lot, it’s never a bad idea to invest in high-quality gear.

To put it this way – the down blanket is almost half the weight of the original one, but costs twice as much, and then some. You’re the only one who can decide if it’s worth that money to you.

Verdict

Should you bite the bullet and get yourself a Rumpl camping blanket? If you’re looking for a lightweight, insulated, and water-resistant camping blanket that’s highly portable, you should definitely consider it.

Go with the Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket if you want a great outdoor blanket that performs well and is not crazy expensive. It’s lightweight enough, it’s plenty warm, and it’s resistant to water and stains. It’s also priced very well, especially when you compare it with similar quality sleeping bags and other camping equipment.
