Are you constantly hunched over your tiny laptop with neck, shoulder and back pain you wish would just go away?
Or, are you fed up with bulky laptop stands that never fit into your laptop sleeve, or which you manage to forget every other time you leave the house?
If you answered yes to any one of those questions, then I have the miracle solution to your problems. It is called the MOFT laptop stand, and it might just change your life, as it did mine.
What is the MOFT laptop stand? How does it work and where can you get it? Read on to get the answers, and to find out absolutely everything about this amazing travel laptop stand!
Let’s start with the name; MOFT stands for Mobile Office For Travellers. It is a laptop stand that lets you work anywhere in the world, by allowing you to elevate your laptop to a higher angle.
If you have heard that before, you might be wondering how is the MOFT different from other laptop stands? For starters, there’s the size and thickness – this is a paper-thin stand that weighs just three ounces. It doesn’t feature any supports or thick plates, so it is not bulky and it will fit even into the tightest of laptop sleeves.
For me, the beauty of the MOFT lies in its simplicity. When you first look at it, it’s nothing but a thin piece of cardboard with creases. So, how can such a simple invention be so insane that it raises more than $1,5 million?
There are several answers to that question, but I have to start with the basics. One reason why this travel laptop stand is so good is the quality of build – even though it’s incredibly thin, it can hold a 10lb laptop perfectly stable. That’s because of the tough and sturdy materials, so let’s talk about those a bit.
I want to get the boring stuff out of the way, before I start talking about how this laptop stand works, what it does and if it’s any good. Take a look at the basic specs of the MOFT laptop stand in the table above.
You read that right, it’s only 1/10 of an inch (3mm) thick. That is actually as thin as a coin, which is is pretty amazing for a laptop stand.
The MOFT is made from PU and fiberglass – two very sturdy, lightweight and tough materials. It is because of those two materials combined that such a thin device is able to hold up to 18 lbs. Also, fiberglass is insanely durable, so much so that it’s impossible to break it unless you are really trying to.
Lower angle (15 degrees) with the MOFT
Higher angle (25 degrees) with the MOFT
With this laptop stand, it’s all about the creases and folds. It’s basically a thin sheet of which sits at different angles through strategic folding.
The laptop stand is one single sheet which is creased and cut up into different sections. The side sections are the legs of the laptop stand – they hold your device up, and you always fold them inwards. The creases at the top and middle of the stand allow the legs to stand up, and let you set different heights by adjusting the center piece.
The center piece has two creases at the bottom. When you fold it over the smaller part, you create the lower viewing angle. And when you push the center piece upwards and towards your laptop, you create the 25 degree angle. It’s origami for digital nomads!
The part of the laptop stand that adheres to your laptop is much bigger than it looks. It is actually almost as wide as the outer part of the MOFT, and that’s how it manages to hold the weight of your laptop and keep it perfectly stable.
The laptop stand lets you elevate your device to two different viewing angles – 15 and 25 degrees. I find the lower angle to be perfect for typing, while the second angle makes watching Netflix or playing video games much more comfortable. But, this is obviously going to depend on a couple different factors, like your height and the height of your table.
The reason I prefer the lower angle for typing is stability. Although the laptop stand is really stable on its own, it does get a bit wobbly at the 25 degree angle. Especially when you’re constantly hitting opposing sides of the laptop. Which is why I prefer it for other stuff; the higher angle is actually perfect for watching movies and TV shows, or playing mouse-only video games.
Bear in mind that I’m drawing from my own experience here. If my 13” laptop is wobbly at the 25 degree angle, I can only assume that a 15.6” device will get rocked a lot. But I might be entirely wrong – let me know if you try it out!
There are actually three different models on the MOFT laptop stand. I have the classic adhesive version, so my experience is limited to that model. But, considering how well this version works, I’m pretty sure the other two MOFTs are just as good.
The adhesive version of the MOFT works with 11”-15.6” devices that do not have vents on the bottom. You’re supposed to attach it as close to the hinge as possible, for equal weight distribution. And it works on both Mac and Windows devices, which is perfect.
There’s another version of the laptop stand, which is designed for laptops that have vents in their bottom – Universal MOFT. This one has a perforated surface, which lets your laptop cooler work normally. It is not adhesive, so I’m not sure if it’s as stable as the regular one, but I assume it is.
The surface of the Universal stand is made from the same non-slip rubber as the bottom of the Adhesive stand, so it should perform just as well. The Universal MOFT is also very thin, and it will fit into any laptop sleeve.
There’s also a Mini version of the MOFT laptop stand. This one is able to create a 10° angle, and it is much shorter than the adhesive and universal versions. The Mini is also compatible with 11”-15.6” devices, and it is only 3mm thick. I’ve not personally tried it out, so I can’t really say if it’s any better or worse than the classic stand.
None of the MOFT laptop stands are compatible with laptops larger than 15.6”, so keep that in mind. If you own a 17” laptop, this is not the right stand for you, and it would be a waste of money. The brand is constantly expanding its range, so I’m assuming they will come out with a stand for larger devices eventually. When that day comes, I will update this review.
MOFT laptop stand on 13″ MacBook Air
MOFT laptop stand on 11″ MacBook Air
I’ve had the opportunity to test out the MOFT laptop stand on 11” and 13” MacBook Airs. On those two laptops, it works wonderfully well. I work on a 13” device, and the stand is a fair bit smaller than the computer. I was worried about it wobbling – ie. would it keep my laptop stable even when I’m hitting the F keys?
For the most part, it does. I’ve found that when my laptop is elevated by 2”, I find it very natural to place my wrists on the side of the touchpad. I can still reach every key on the keyboard, and my wrists keep the laptop incredibly stable even when you’re hitting the F keys. My 13” laptop is perfectly stable when I’m writing like this, and I honestly have no complaints.
Also, it really helps that the bottom of the stand is non-slip rubber. This helps keep the laptop stable even if its lower parts are not all supported. The bottom inch of your laptop could literally hang off the table, and this stand would still keep it supported.
Non-stick rubber bottom of the MOFT
However, when you’re not resting your wrists on the bottom part of the laptop, it can get wobbly. Especially if you’re a bit more aggressive and you really press down on those keys.
But that’s not going to happen too often – placing your wrists on the sides of the touchpad really comes naturally. The keyboard is a little slanted, so it’s much easier to type that way. You’ll see for yourself if you actually give the MOFT a go.
I haven’t had the opportunity to test out the stand on a 15.6” device, so I can’t say if it will keep a bigger laptop stable. However, I did check out videos on YouTube, and from what I’ve seen, the MOFT does keep the larger devices stable.
My main issue with laptop stands is that they are rarely portable. Sure, there are lots of foldable laptop stands out there, but none of them would fit in a laptop sleeve. I carry my laptop in a thin stretchy sleeve, which can also fit a mouse pad and a couple of USBs, but it wouldn’t fit any of the other laptop stands.
So, I would have to put those in a separate compartment, which would seriously take away from the overall capacity of my laptop backpack. Which is annoying and impractical.
The MOFT is advertised as an invisible laptop stand, and that’s pretty much the truth. It is paper-thin, and it lies entirely flat against the bottom of your laptop, thanks to the magnets. You can fit your laptop inside a sleeve with the MOFT attached, and there won’t even be any bumps in the sleeve. Which is exactly what makes this the perfect laptop stand for travel.
I work a lot while I’m traveling, which means that I’m often writing in coffee shops. And unless I’m lucky enough that a particular cafe has really tall tables and chairs, it usually means that I’m going to spend a couple of hours writing in a really uncomfortable position. The MOFT laptop stand will ensure that never happens to you again.
Consider this – once you attach the MOFT to your laptop, you’re set for the foreseeable future. You don’t have to think about laptop stands ever again, and you never have to remind yourself to pack one. It’s going to stay attached to your device until you decide otherwise, making it an amazing accessory for forgetful travelers.
If you spend a lot of time typing away on your laptop, chances are you’re struggling with neck and back pain. You’re hunched over your device for the better part of the day, and not even an overpriced computer chair will entirely eliminate the back pain. Sounds familiar?
Yeah, that was me two months ago. I tried everything by that point – spending too much money on a supportive gaming chair, regular massages, painkillers – but nothing was a permanent solution. The issue was so obvious – I was always hunched in front of my 13” laptop. So, when I saw an ad for a $20 laptop stand that promised to improve my posture, I could not resist trying it out.
And I am delighted I decided to get it. I did not dare get my expectations too high, especially since it’s such an affordable laptop stand and there are conflicting reviews on their website. But when I finally got the opportunity to check it out, I was blown away. And I still don’t understand how two inches can make such a huge difference!
But they really do. When your laptop is elevated by two inches, your entire posture immediately changes. The screen is better visible, so it’s easier to sit back and lean into your chair. Your shoulders are immediately straightened, as is your neck. It feels more comfortable to straighten your back, and actually rely on the support of your chair.
And that’s not even the best part. No, the best part is that all of that happens subconsciously. You will straighten your back, neck and shoulders without thinking about it, because it’s going to feel natural to do that. Because it’s going to be more comfortable to sit like that. And it’s going to last.
At first, I thought it was a placebo effect. I expected the stand to help with my back pain, and so I felt relieved. I was scared that the pain would come back after the placebo effect wore off, but it didn’t. Here I am, two months later, finally living a pain-free life.
If you’re dealing with back or neck pains caused by bad posture while you’re in working on your laptop, the MOFT will change your life. And I’m not even exaggerating; if you actually try it out, you will see that I’m telling the truth.
Attaching the Adhesive laptop stand to your device is incredibly simple. You can’t really mess it up – just remove the protective foil and try to put it as close to the hinge as possible. Ideally, the MOFT should be at the center of your device – this allows for equal weight distribution and helps keep your laptop stable.
Don’t worry if you mess up – you can just take off the laptop stand and try to attach it again. The adhesive doesn’t leave any residues, so the bottom of your device won’t get sticky.
And if you get the Universal laptop stand, this isn’t something you need to worry about at all.
Anyway, watching other people attach this stand to their laptop helped me get it right the first time I did it. So, here’s a video of a person attaching the Adhesive MOFT stand to their laptop:
If I’m being perfectly honest, there is a bit of a learning curve with the MOFT. My first attempt at adjusting was a miserable failure, but I succeeded on my second attempt. It’s not as intuitive and simple as they would have you believe in their ad video – at least when you first try to adjust it. But after a while, you get used to how it works. It is a kind of origami after all!
The trick is to only work with the thick rectangle in the middle. If you want to elevate the laptop to the lower angle, you have to hold the bottom of the stand with your thumb, while pushing out the middle. This makes the stand fold outwards, which creates the 15 angle. To get the 25 angle from here, you just need to push the thick middle rectangle upwards.
Did any of that make sense? I’m not sure it did, so I’m including a video demonstration of how this works. But I promise you, it might sound weird and it might be difficult the first time you try it, but you’ll get the hang of it by the second or third time. In just a day or two, you will be adjusting this thing as easily as they showed in the video.
Absolutely not. I’ve been using it daily ever since I got it, and never once did my laptop drop down while I was writing. The MOFT is surprisingly sturdy, and it’s had no trouble holding up my lightweight device.
It supports the weight of the laptop effortlessly, and it even works fine if I’m using it in my lap.
But I did not conduct various tests to see how durable it is. I don’t know if you can break it if you try really hard. What I can tell you is that after two months of daily use, the MOFT works as perfectly as it did on day one. The only thing that’s changed is that the creases in the stand are now very pronounced, which is expected with daily use.
Yes! Well, obviously you can reuse the Universal stand a million different times; I’m talking about the Adhesive stand. MOFT claims that you can reattach it up to 100 different times, which is pretty great.
But I can’t vouch for that, since I didn’t attempt to reattach it 100 times. In fact, I never took it off since I first attached it to my laptop, since I really didn’t need to. It’s not coming off at the sides, and it honestly looks just like it did the first day. Which is surprising, considering just how much I tend to spill around my laptop.
The MOFT laptop stand is also compatible with plastic cases – just properly attach it to the case, and it will work just as it would on a regular laptop.
Compared to other laptop stands on the market, the MOFT is incredibly affordable. The prices differ depending on the type of stand you’re getting – so, the Mini is the cheapest, the Adhesive is about $25, and the Universal costs some $30.
And there are also $35 versions of the Adhesive stand, which are collaborations with different artists. These look incredibly cool, and they’re worth the extra price if you want to stand out.
But if you just want your laptop stand to blend in with your laptop, you can go for the classic. They’re actually compatible with standard MacBook colors, and they will entirely blend in with your MacBook. Which is pretty cool – it really makes it an invisible laptop stand.
In addition to that, the Adhesive MOFT is available in a bundle. You can get two for some $40, which is pretty amazing. Especially because they offer free worldwide shipping when you spend $39 or more!
So, find a friend that needs one of these babies, and you can both get yourself an amazing laptop stand for $20!
The shipping times are okay – I’m in Europe, and I got it in about two weeks, which is pretty insane. Mind you, I’m still waiting on an ASOS order I placed about a month ago, and most other shipments from China take longer than a month to get here. You can also spring for DHL shipping, but I honestly don’t think that’s worth it.
Additionally, the MOFT laptop stand is available on Amazon. This is perfect if you’re in the US since you can get free Prime delivery.
