The Bon Air luggage is our favorite option if you’re specifically looking for hardsides. The suitcases are made from polypropylene, and they are incredibly lightweight. Which makes them excellent options if your luggage has to stay within certain weight restrictions.
And the thing I love about this luggage is that it is available in really bright and fun colors – perfect for noticing your bag on the carousel immediately.
This collection features three suitcases – a small carry-on, and medium and large checked bags. None of them have an expandable capacity, and the largest suitcase has a volume of 91 liters, so they are not the best option if you need some really spacious luggage. If you’re looking to get a suitcase with a capacity of over 100 liters, you will find options in the later sections of this review.
These suitcases are equipped with single spinner wheels that roll smoothly and quietly, so moving around the airport will be a piece of cake. Especially with the retractable wheel handle that locks into both extended and stored positions.
The luggage interior is divided into two packing compartments, one of which has a full panel zippered divider with two roomy pockets. And the other compartment features elastic cross straps and a smaller zippered pocket, so organizing your smaller items will come naturally when packing in these suitcases.
All three Bon Air suitcases are equipped with TSA-friendly locks, so you can be certain that your belongings will always be protected. And they all have top grab handles and an ID tag in the bag. One thing worth noting is that the smallest suitcase does not have a side grab handle, but the two larger bags do.
The Belle Voyage suitcases are the best-selling softshell luggage from American Tourister. And part of that has to be because of the gorgeous denim exterior with rose gold accents. They are unique, and are bound to score you some compliments!
Plus, these are actually really good suitcases. The collection features three bags – a carry-on, a medium checked bag, and a large checked bag. And there’s only one feature that is not exactly the same on all three suitcases, which is the top grab handle.
The two checked bags have a standard grab handle, while the smallest suitcase has two long ones that look like tote handles. All three bags also have bottom and side grab handles.
These suitcases feature a really roomy packing compartment with expandable capacity. The internal cross straps will keep your clothes in place, while the multiple pockets on the top cover allow you to organizer all of your smaller belongings.
And you also have two external compartments, for any items, you remember last-minute or just want to have extra handy. One of those compartments actually has a hidden zipper, so it’s pretty good for the most valuable items that you want to keep safe.
These suitcases are all equipped with smooth spinner wheels, which guarantee easy maneuverability. They also have a retractable wheel handle that locks into place when extended, so you have total control of your luggage. However, none of the Belle Voyage suitcases have a TSA lock or any lock for that matter, so I don’t recommend them if you want to be sure that your stuff is 100% safe at all times.
If you just want an underseat bag, then your best option is the Zoom tote. The main reason for that is because it has spinner wheels – a feature you don’t always see on softside suitcases, let alone small totes.
This bag is a part of the Zoom luggage collection, which also features three regular-sized suitcases. You can check out the link below as well – they’re actually pretty good softshells with some really attractive price tags. Especially considering that this is one of their newer collections. It is an upgraded version of the old Zoom bags, which were bulkier and heavier.
The underseat tote has a spacious main compartment with an internal divider and two zippered pockets. And there are also elastic cross straps inside, which will hold your clothes in place even if you don’t secure the divider panel to the sides.
In addition to the internal pockets, the bag also has two external zippered compartments. They’re great for items you want to have more easily accessible, and the side pockets are actually roomy enough to hold a water bottle.
The spinner wheels and the telescopic wheel handle ensure the easy maneuverability of your luggage, while the luggage strap in the back allows you to mount the bag on top of a bigger suitcase. It’s a very convenient feature to have, especially if you’re looking to get this bag in addition to a larger suitcase.
The only downside of the Zoom Turbo bag is that it is pretty heavy for an underseater. At almost 6.5 lbs, this bag weighs as much as an average carry-on suitcase, so it’s not the best option if you’re looking for ultralight luggage.
One of the things that make American Tourister really cool is the fact they have several different luggage collections for children. This includes hardside and softside suitcases with adorable shells that feature anything from Disney princesses to Star Wars characters. Which makes the bags an excellent option if you want to trick your kids into carrying their own luggage.
This particular suitcase is a great option for kids because it is small enough they can carry it themselves, but roomy enough that it can actually fit all the clothes they need for a vacation. Plus it is a carry-on suitcase, so you wouldn’t have to pay anything extra for it.
The packing compartment of the bag is quite roomy, and it has elastic cross straps to keep the contents in place. There’s also a big slip pocket on the top cover, which can hold any items your little ones would want to keep separate.
On top of that, this children’s suitcase has an external zippered pocket that’s great for stuff they want to have easily accessible. Maybe it’s a magazine or a coloring book – the pocket is roomy enough to fit anything.
This American Tourister luggage is equipped with classic in-line skate wheels and a telescopic wheel handle. That’s not the best case scenario in terms of maneuverability, since the wheels require your kids to tilt the suitcase to get them rolling. But it’s a small bag, so it really shouldn’t get so heavy that they can’t wheel it around on their own.
The thing you will like the most about this luggage is the price point. All of the bags are under $50, and that’s the full price. Most of them are discounted, and you can actually get this suitcase for some $30 – a really great deal if you ask me!
Luggage sets are usually the best value for money you can get, and the Fieldbrook XLT is so affordable that it’s going to blow your mind. The 4-piece set, which includes two suitcases, a duffel, and an underseater is under $100! It’s definitely the best deal you’ll get on American Tourister luggage, so don’t skip it if you’re on a really tight budget.
But, just keep in mind that the individual suitcases are really not the best the brand has to offer. They are polyester softsides with in-line skate wheels, and I definitely don’t recommend them for air travel. These are great for road trips and train rides, but I doubt they can handle being tossed around by baggage handlers.
The two suitcases have expandable capacity, an internal pocket, two external compartments, and elastic cross straps inside. One is a 21” carry-on, and the other is a medium 25” bag.
You also get a wheeled duffel; it is pretty spacious and great for road trips. And there’s even a boarding bag, which has several internal and external pockets, for easy organization.
Those are the bags that come in solid color sets anyway. The blue floral set features two spinner suitcases, a regular duffel, and a travel tote – it might be the better option, simply because of the spinners. And it’s only about $10 more expensive than the other sets, so you’re still getting a really good deal.
The Eclipse is a very interesting softside suitcase. It has a unique feature I don’t think I’ve seen on a suitcase before – an external compression strap. The strap is hidden so it’s not obvious on the front panel, and it’s actually pretty convenient. This is a great backup feature – in case you experience a zipper malfunction and can’t get the packing compartment to close, the strap will be a life-saver.
This luggage is made from 600D polyester, and it has reinforced corners for better durability. And these are very stylish suitcases – the black and blue exterior looks really good, and even the lining matches the exterior.
Additionally, the Eclipse luggage features single spinner wheels, as well as the top, side, and bottom grab handles. And there’s the telescopic wheel handle, which locks into both extended and stored positions. It’s very sturdy, but it is not ergonomic so it’s not going to feel super comfortable in your hand.
The packing compartment is very roomy and has several pockets for easy organization. Plus, the capacity of the suitcase is expandable, so you will be able to fit quite a lot of stuff in these.
There are also two external compartments on this luggage, which are great for items you want to keep easily accessible. But you will need to be careful what you put in the larger front pocket – the compression strap goes over this compartment, so avoid using it for items that could get ripped or deformed.
The Tribus luggage is American Tourister’s version of a sturdy and safe zipperless suitcase. The collection features three suitcases, which you can also purchase as a set for a little over $100 apiece.
These hardside suitcases are made from textured polypropylene. They are very lightweight, especially considering that they have latch closure – those tend to weigh a lot more than zippers, and it’s not so easy to find a zipperless suitcase that’s under 10 lbs. One of the latches is TSA friendly, which makes the bags a great option for air travel.
The textured exterior of the shell helps make any scuffs and scratches less visible, which keeps your suitcase looking brand new longer.
This luggage features double spinner wheels that are super smooth and quiet, as well as a retractable wheel handle that locks into the extended position. The wheel handle barrels are on the outside of the suitcase, so they don’t take up a lot of space inside the packing compartments. This is noticeable from the high capacity of these suitcases.
There are two packing compartments, and both of them are fully lined. The bottom one has cross straps to keep the contents secure, while the top compartment features a full panel zippered divider. And each compartment has one zippered pocket, so you will be able to keep the smaller stuff neatly organized.
The Wakefield set is another great option, especially if you’re looking to get several pieces of luggage. It features three suitcases, a garment sleeve, and a boarding bag, for less than $30 apiece! And that is enough luggage for two or three people.
One of the suitcases is a 28” spinner, while the other two are smaller upright bags. And the wheels are one of two things that differ on the suitcases – the other one is expandable capacity, which you don’t get on the two smaller bags. The rest of the features are more or less the same – there’s one roomy main compartment with tie-down straps, an internal zippered pocket, and two external compartments.
All three suitcases also have a retractable double-barrel wheel handle, which locks with a push of the button. You can secure it in both stored and extended positions, but it is not height adjustable.
The garment sleeve is 40” when fully extended, and there’s enough room inside to fit four suits. Plus, it has an external zippered pocket, for any smaller items you’d like to have easy access to.
The boarding bag is the smallest piece of luggage in this set, and it makes a great personal item on airplanes. It has a trolley sleeve in the back so that you can secure it on top of a suitcase, and it comes with a long shoulder strap for easy carrying. Additionally, this bag has several internal and external pockets, so it will be easy to keep all your in-flight necessities organized.
The carry-on suitcase and the boarding bag are the only two bags I would recommend for frequent flyers. The bigger suitcases are not the best option if you want a checked bag; even with the tough polyester and reinforced corners, there’s a pretty big chance they will start falling apart after just 3-4 flights.
If you want to get a duffel bag, the Road Quest is a really good option. It is a wheeled duffel with a huge capacity, so it’s very convenient for long trips. You can fill it up to the brim, without worrying about its weight and whether or not you will be able to carry it.
The thing I love the most about this duffel bag is that it has two packing compartments. And there are full panel dividers that separate them, which is really great for a duffel bag.
You get the advantage of its really large capacity, but with the organizational features of a classic suitcase. There’s also a large pocket on one of the divider panels, as well as internal tie-down straps to keep your clothes in place.
On top of that, this duffel bag features a small outer pocket, for items you need handy at all times. It doesn’t have any other external compartments though, so you won’t be able to have a lot of stuff easily accessible.
There are top, front and bottom grab handles on the Road Quest duffel, as well as the telescopic wheel handle. And the duffel has two external compression straps, which will help you tighten up the packing compartments. This bag doesn’t feature a long shoulder strap, but that makes sense – with the wheels and the base, the packed duffel is too heavy to be carried on one shoulder.
Additionally, the base of the bag is very sturdy, and it allows the duffel to stand upright. That’s great because a lot of wheeled duffels don’t have this feature, which causes them to tip over when you just want them to stand still.
The Flylife suitcase is a 21” expandable carry-on with some really great features. This luggage is made from pure polycarbonate, and it is probably the most durable American Tourister bag in this review. The shell is textured and it has a matte finish, so scuffs and scratches won’t really be visible.
One thing I love about this luggage is the lightweight. The carry-on weighs less than 6 lbs, which is pretty good for a hardside PC suitcase. And it has a capacity of 46 liters, which is more than enough for shorter trips.
This suitcase has double spinner wheels that are really smooth, and which are super easy to maneuver. There’s also a three-digit TSA-friendly lock that ensures the safety of your items. The wheel handle is retractable, and it can be locked when fully extended. It makes it really easy to move around with the suitcase, and it feels pretty comfortable in your hand.
The luggage has two packing compartments with expandable capacity. The top one has a full panel zippered divider with a pocket, while the bottom compartment features elastic cross straps and a zippered pocket. Both compartments are fully lined, and the accents inside match the color of the shell – a simple but thoughtful feature.
However, this is one of the pricier American Tourister suitcases, so it’s definitely not for people on a tight budget. It’s not an expensive bag, but you could get a set of 5 bags for the price of one Flylife. But I think the price is more than fair, considering the durable materials and excellent features.
American Tourister has quite a few different types of luggage in their product range, and I tried to include as many as possible. So, what exactly are you looking for – a suitcase, an underseat bag, a duffel, or a luggage set?
Large luggage pieces are best for people who usually go on longer trips. Go with a checked suitcase or a really big duffel bag, if you normally go away for more than a week at a time. On the other hand, if you just want a piece of luggage that can be your personal item on flights, it’s best to get an underseat bag or a small tote.
And if you want all of the above, then definitely pick up a luggage set. They are the best value for money, and you will get enough different luggage pieces or all sorts of trips. Plus, if you know you’re not going to use some of the pieces, you can always gift them or resell them.
If you’re looking to get a suitcase, then you need to figure out whether you want a hardshell or a softshell one.
Softshell suitcases are better for people who are looking to stay organized and fit a lot of items inside them. They are generally lighter than hardshells and have a lot more pockets. But, they are not as durable as hardside suitcases, and I would not recommend them for air travel.
The soft fabric doesn’t have the best impact resistance, and if the luggage is thrown around a lot, it can wind up on the carousel looking like a pancake. Which is not something you want.
So, if you want a suitcase specifically for flights, go with hardshell luggage because they are the most durable options. But even that depends on the materials – the American Tourister hardside luggage features here is mostly made from polypropylene.
The material is not quite as durable as polycarbonate, but it is much lighter. This means it won’t ever be an issue to stay within weight restrictions for carry-on and checked bags, as long as you don’t overpack your luggage. But there is one polycarbonate option, for those of you that want extra-durable luggage.
American Tourister has a lot of ABS plastic luggage as well, but I decided not to include any in this review. ABS is the cheapest and least durable material for hardsides, and I don’t really consider those suitcases to be the ‘best’ at all. That’s why there aren’t any of them here.
American Tourister is a mid-range brand owned by Samsonite, and they have pretty affordable luggage. But it’s not always the case – some of their best suitcases cost hundreds of dollars, so make sure that you’re looking at luggage that you can actually afford.
Keep in mind that the best materials and premium features will be expensive no matter what logo is on the luggage. And, you can usually find some sort of deal on any one of the bags featured here – maybe one color is cheaper than the others, or you can get a better deal with a different seller.
Just try and see all the options that are available, if you want to make sure that you’re getting the best deal possible.
Also, think about getting a luggage set if you want to get the best value for money possible. Especially if you need two or more pieces of luggage – some 4-piece sets I showed you are cheaper than certain individual suitcases, which is pretty amazing. And you can always sell the luggage that you don’t need, and get some of that money back.
All of the luggage featured here is the best of the best, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have any favorites. So, here are the top three bags you should get if you’re having a hard time choosing just one!
If you’re looking for a suitcase, then go with the Belle Voyage luggage. It is made from denim, which is really cool and unique. The suitcase has spinner wheels, a telescopic wheel handle, and a really roomy main compartment with expandable capacity.
There are enough pockets in the bag that it will be really easy to stay organized when packing, as well as two easily accessible external compartments for items you want to have extra handy.
The best small bag that will fit under airplane seats is the Zoom Turbo bag. It has spinner wheels and a very tall wheel handle, so it is really easy to maneuver the bag. The main compartment is very spacious for a bag this size, and it features several pockets for easy organization.
The Zoom under seater also features a few external compartments, for all those items you need easily accessible. And there’s a luggage strap in the back, which lets you mount the bag on top of a larger suitcase.
If you’re looking for value, then go with the Fieldbrook XLT luggage set. It features two suitcases, a wheeled duffel, and a boarding bag for less than $100. This set is crazily affordable, and it’s great for people who need several pieces of luggage but are on a tight budget. The suitcases are pretty standard softsides with in-line skate wheels and expandable capacity.
The duffel bag is an awesome option for road trips – it is very spacious and can fit a lot of clothes, but you won’t have to carry it in your hands thanks to the wheels. And the boarding bag has plenty of different pockets, for easy organization of your must-have items!
