The AmazonBasics backpack is a good option if you want something simple and affordable. It can fit 17” laptops, it’s made from some really good materials and it retails for a little over $30, which is absolutely incredible. If you can’t afford to spend a lot of money on a laptop backpack, this is definitely one of the best options for you.
The great thing about this bag is that it has two main compartments, as well as two smaller ones. There are sleeves and slip pockets everywhere, so there’s definitely enough space for all the smaller stuff. In fact, you could fit two laptops, a tablet, all the chargers, cables, external hard drives, a mouse, and a keyboard in the bag, and the bag would still be half-empty.
That’s why I like this laptop backpack so much. It’s a great everyday bag, but it is also versatile enough that you could take it on an outdoor adventure – fill up the interior with outdoor gear, and don’t worry about the rugged exterior.
I think you will also love the back system of this laptop backpack. The backpanel is padded, with three ventilated inserts that guarantee excellent breathability. And there’s even a tiny mesh pouch on one of the shoulder straps, which is perfect for stuff you want to have handy at all times.
Additionally, the AmazonBasics laptop bag also features compression straps above the stretchy side pockets. This is great for two reasons; one, you can tighten up the backpack when it’s not full for better load stabilization, And two, you can use the straps to secure some bigger items in the side pockets – like tripods or even walking poles.
This is a very slim laptop backpack, so it’s best for people who are looking for something simple and minimalistic. If you don’t usually carry 15 lbs of laptop accessories with you, the Victorinox Altmont laptop backpack is a great option for you.
It features two separate compartments below to buckled top flap, as well as an extra zippered pocket on the front panel. The laptop compartment is in the back, and it doesn’t feature any extra closure other than the main flap. You can fit a 15.6” device inside and it will always be easily accessible.
There’s also a main compartment with expandable capacity, which features a zipper closure. It has a roomy tablet sleeve inside, as well as an organizer panel inside a larger zippered pocket. There’s plenty of space inside the main compartment for all your tech accessories, and it is big enough to fit A4 documents and files.
Additionally, this backpack also features three other pockets on the front panel. The main one has a zipper closure, and it’s big enough to fit textbooks and notebooks if that’s what you need. There are also two open pockets on the front panel – one on each side of the vertical zipper. These are pretty long, and they’re perfect for those bulky items that don’t fit properly inside the small open pockets.
On top of all that, the Victorinox backpack also features really thick padding in the backpanel for excellent carrying comfort. There’s no breathable mesh though, so it doesn’t have the best ventilation. But considering how small this bag is, that’s hardly a deal breaker.
If you need a backpack for a massive gaming laptop, the FreeBiz pack is a great option for you. It has a really big laptop compartment that fits all devices, including the bulkiest 18.4” computers that exist. And it features a water-resistant exterior, for great protection from the elements.
The cool thing about this backpack is that it has organizer panels and slip pockets for days. There are at least two open pockets in every large compartment, so there’s definitely more than enough space for all the computer accessories you’d want to pack inside. And there is a second roomy compartment, which you can use for books, documents, clothes or whatever you want.
The FreeBiz backpack also features a very comfortable back system. The backpanel is actually equipped with two large mesh panels, with an airflow channel in the middle. This allows for really good ventilation, while the thick padding keeps you from feeling the items inside the bag.
In addition to that, this pack features a waist belt for better load distribution. It goes a long way towards transferring the weight of the bag onto your hips, so that you don’t experience any pain or fatigue when you’re wearing the bag. But there is no sternum strap, so you won’t be able to secure the shoulder straps entirely in place.
Also, it’s worth noting that you’ll get a lot of exterior pockets on this bag. There are two zippered pockets on either side of the bag, as well as two smaller compartments on the front panel. And that’s in addition to the two main compartments with organizers and open pockets!
SwissGear makes some really amazing laptop backpacks, and I had to include at least one of their bags. If you’re looking for a versatile pack that you could use for the everyday commute but also for travel or outdoor adventures, this is by far the best option for you.
The main reason for that is the durable exterior of the bag. This backpack is made from 1200D ballistic polyester with weather-resistant coating, for excellent durability even in really harsh conditions. And the backpack features a TSA-friendly laptop compartment, so it’s a really good option if you want a carry-on.
The lay-flat ScanSmart compartment can easily fit 17” laptops, and it even features a floating tablet sleeve. There are no other pockets in this compartment though, but that’s because of the TSA-friendly design. And there’s plenty of space for chargers, hard drives, and a mouse in the main compartment of the bag. In fact, there’s a sleeve so big inside that you could easily fit another laptop in it.
I also mentioned that this is a backpack you could bring on outdoor adventures, so let’s talk about that for a bit. That’s partly because it has a very comfortable back system with thick padding and breathable mesh, but more so because it has some really convenient features. The front of the backpack features both daisy chain webbing and a carabiner, which are great for attaching some bulky stuff to the bag.
And there are compression straps on the sides, which let you put whatever you want in the side pockets. They also let you cinch in the backpack for improved load stabilization, so remember to use them when the bag is not filled to capacity.
In case you want to get a versatile bag, the Razer Tactical backpack is a really good option. It’s a laptop backpack on the inside, but a rugged outdoor backpack on the inside. And if you want a bag that can go from the office to the mountains with ease, this is a really good option.
The thing that makes this pack unique is the big MOLLE panel on the front. It allows you to attach gear to the exterior of the bag, as long as you use a carabiner. There’s also a big Velcro patch on the front, which will come in handy in case you want to customize the bag.
You can actually choose between two sizes of the tactical backpack, and one of those options is suitable for 17” devices. The laptop compartment is in the back of the bag, and it is easily accessible thanks to the zipper that runs along the entire side of the pack. Additionally, I really like that the compression straps go over this zipper; it provides a bit more security for your laptop, as it sort of acts as an anti-theft feature.
The main compartment of this bag features roll-top closure, and it is very roomy. You will be able to fit quite a lot of gear inside, whether that’s camping gear or just books and documents. And that’s because there’s actually a dedicated compartment for your laptop accessories, with multiple open pockets for easy organization.
On top of all that, this is also a pretty comfortable backpack to wear. It features really thick padding in the backpanel, but not a lot of breathable mesh. This means that it will feel soft against your body, but the breathability could be improved.
If you want a stylish laptop backpack, the Samsonite Classic Leather pack is an excellent option for you. It’s a gorgeous backpack with a really sleek exterior, which makes it a great bag for work. Or even for travel – you do get a luggage strap in the back, as well as a laptop compartment that is separate from the rest of the bag.
That laptop compartment will fit a standard 15.6” laptop, and you can also fit an extra device inside the main compartment. If you normally carry two computers with you, this pack should be one of your top three options.
There’s also a tablet sleeve in the front compartment, as well as two roomy phone pockets. And that is just storage space for your electronic devices – the Samsonite backpack also features an abundance of open and zippered pockets for all the accessories you could possibly need for those devices.
I also love the back system of this bag. The shoulder straps and the backpanel feature really thick padding and breathable mesh, for premium carrying comfort. There’s no hip belt or sternum strap, but I don’t think those are necessary features on small capacity bags like this.
Plus, the main compartment is pretty roomy, so you could fit documents or even clothes inside, in addition to the laptop and all the chargers. You don’t get any side pockets on this backpack though, which is a shame.
On the one hand, they would compromise the classy exterior of the bag so I totally get why Samsonite didn’t include them. But it would be really nice to have a dedicated water bottle pocket on the outside, especially with so many different devices inside.
Osprey is one of the best backpack brands out there, so I had to include at least one of their awesome laptop bags. I decided to go with the Nebula – a large capacity laptop backpack with a TSA friendly laptop pocket.
The Nebula is marketed as an everyday backpack, but it has features that make it an okay option for both travel and outdoor adventures. So, if you’d like a versatile backpack that you can use for several different purposes, this is a really good option. It is a bit pricey though, but you are paying for top-notch quality and a really extensive warranty.
The laptop compartment will fit 15.6” laptops easily, and you might be able to squeeze some smaller 17” devices as well. And that’s just in the dedicated pocket – you also get lots of space for laptop accessories in the main and front compartments.
One reason why Osprey backpacks are so amazing is that you’re never disappointed by the carrying comfort. And this is true for the Nebula pack as well; it features Osprey’s proprietary AirScape backpanel that is known for extremely stable load distribution.
With the AirScape back system, the load is carried right next to the body; this keeps the weight close, and in turn, ensures you are comfortable while you’re wearing the bag. Plus, with breathable mesh everywhere, you’ll never get too sweaty with this bag on your shoulders.
And the Nebula laptop backpack is equipped with a hip belt and a sternum strap, so it will be pretty comfortable even if you manage to make it really heavy.
If you’re looking to get a backpack that’s suitable for travel, the Everki Titan pack is a great option. It features a TSA friendly laptop sleeve that can fit devices up to 18.4”, and that’s impressive. What’s better is that this bag also has a tablet sleeve inside the main compartment and that one can fit devices up to 13”. So, you can easily fit two laptops in this backpack if you want.
Additionally, the laptop sleeve is actually lined with felt, in order to protect your device from any scuffs and scratches. There’s also a Velcro strap that will hold it in place, so it doesn’t accidentally slide out of the pocket.
Apart from the laptop pockets, this backpack features two other roomy compartments. Both are equipped with open pockets inside, and the front compartment even features an entire organizer panel for all your accessories. Plus, you will actually get a travel pouch with this backpack, which will let you organize all those nasty chargers and cables even better.
On top of that, I have some great things to say about the back system of this bag. It features three panels covered with breathable mesh with an airflow channel in between them, for superb ventilation. And there is lots of thick foam padding, so you’re not going to feel the contents of the bag at all.
One thing to note is that this bag might not always be accepted as a carry-on, especially if you fill it up to capacity. This is a pretty big backpack with a total capacity of 40 liters, and not all airlines will let you carry it on board.
The Timbuk2 Rogue is a simple laptop backpack with a modern design. It features flap-over closure with buckles that secure the top in place. And it has just one spacious compartment, so it’s a great backpack for people who aren’t used to carrying a lot of stuff and want something minimalistic.
The laptop sleeve is inside that roomy compartment, and it can fit computers up to 15”. It’s padded, and it features a Velcro strap that ensures your laptop will stay put until you say otherwise. There are also a couple of slip pockets inside this compartment, for easy organization of the smaller accessories.
Additionally, this backpack features an extra compartment on the front panel, so you do have a dedicated spot for items you want to keep more easily accessible. And there’s an entire MOLLE panel on the front of the bag, making this a decent option for some shorter outdoor adventures as well. You also get attachment points on one side of the bag, while the other side features a convenient water bottle pocket.
The Rogue backpack also has an excellent back system, which is entirely covered with breathable mesh. This guarantees excellent ventilation, while the thick foam padding ensures that the content of the bag doesn’t poke you in the back.
There’s even a sternum strap that will guarantee those shoulder straps stay put, which is something you will probably use if you take this backpack on a hike. And one of the shoulder straps features a built-in bottle opener – a convenient little feature that just shows great attention to detail from the brand.
If you just want a simple and affordable laptop backpack, the Matein bag is a great option. It’s a good laptop backpack with multiple large compartments, lots of internal pockets, and a pretty comfortable backpanel. And it retails for around $30, so it’s a very affordable bag.
This backpack is available in two sizes, and I’m focusing on the smaller one here. But just so you know, you can also get it in a size that fits bigger 17″ devices.
The Matein backpack has four zippered compartments total; two are spacious and they are both in the back, while the smaller two are on the front of the bag. The compartment with the dedicated laptop sleeve is the one in the back, and it features a padded laptop pocket with a Velcro strap that will hold your device in place.
The main compartment is the most spacious one, and it can fit all your clothes, books and computer accessories inside. In fact, this compartment is roomy enough to hold enough stuff for a weekend away, making this backpack a decent option for some shorter trips as well. Especially since the pack features a convenient luggage strap, which lets you mount it on top of a suitcase.
On top of that, the bag also has an organizer panel in the front compartment, for easy organization of all those smaller items. And there’s a zippered pocket on the front panel, as well as a hidden zippered pocket on the backpanel.
The back pocket is actually hidden behind one of the mesh inserts, which is there for excellent ventilation. Plus, this laptop backpack also features stretchy side pockets, a USB charging port, and D-ring attachment points, for even more versatile use.
The most important feature of a laptop backpack is its laptop compartment. And the one thing that has to be perfect is its size – you could find the most amazing pack in the world, but it’s useless if it has a 13” laptop compartment and you have a 15.6” device.
All of the backpacks featured in this review will fit laptops that are 15.6” or smaller. I’ve also included several 17” laptop backpacks, so there are options for people with those bulky devices. Just make sure to double-check that you’re getting the pack in the right size before you actually buy anything.
Another thing worth noting is that quite a lot of backpacks featured here can actually fit two laptops. If that’s what you actually need, then look for a bag that has a really big tablet sleeve. You’re not going to actually get two laptop compartments but you can get a bag that can fit 13” tablets, which might as well be a second computer pocket for a smaller device.
To find that perfect backpack for you, it is important to first think about the features you are not willing to compromise on. And I’m not talking about the size of the laptop compartment here – I’m talking about all those little details that will make your daily life simpler.
For example, if you’re always charging your phone on the go, look for a backpack that has a USB port. This feature lets you charge your phone while you’re walking around, with the power bank safely stored inside the bag.
And if you wear glasses or sunglasses, look for a bag that has a scratch-free pocket for them. This feature is usually at the top of the bag, in order to protect the sunglasses from the other items in your bag. This means you could put them in the pocket without a case, and not worry that your laptop will crush them to pieces.
Other features to look for are stretchy side pockets if you always carry a water bottle with you, a headphone port, if you’re still using OG, wired earphones, external attachment points if you want to bag to be more versatile, etc. Think about the things you wish you had on your current bag, and you shouldn’t have any trouble finding the perfect laptop backpack for you.
Do you want a backpack that you can take to school or a bag that you can use for traveling? Maybe you want a laptop backpack that doubles as a sturdy outdoor bag? Or just something sleek and simple that will get you and your device from home to the office?
I showed you some really different bags here, and each is one is great for a particular purpose. That’s why you should know exactly how you want to use the backpack – I don’t want you to end up with a tactical laptop backpack if you’re looking for a bag that can work as a carry-on.
So, think about what you want from the backpack, and where you want to take it. Once you’ve figured that out, look for a pack that fits all scenarios. If you want it to double as an outdoor pack, look for a bag that has a waterproof exterior, or at least comes with a rain cover. And in that case, you want something with a hip belt and a sternum strap – those two features might not be necessary on a standard laptop bag, but they are a must on outdoor bags.
Inn case you just want to use the bag for school or work, then make sure that the size is okay – some of the backpacks I showed you are quite big, and they’re not going to fit under school desks. The same goes if you want a pack you can travel with – you should triple check the dimensions, to make sure your favorite airline will actually accept it as a carry-on.
Can’t decide on just one laptop backpack to get? Then go with one of our top three choices – choose the one that’s in your price range and you won’t have any regrets!
The FreeBiz backpack is one of the best options out there because it can fit devices of all sizes. This bag is suitable even for those massive 18.4” gaming laptops, and it features multiple zippered compartments. It also has a comfortable back system with thick padding and breathable mesh, as well as sturdy compression straps for improved load stabilization. And it’s under $50, so it’s easily the top bag we recommend.
If you want something a bit more versatile, go with the Razer Tactical backpack. It is a laptop backpack first, but it has some great features that make it an excellent outdoor backpack as well. You can fit a 17” computer inside, and attach outdoor gear to the external MOLLE panel. You can even organize all those small laptop gadgets, thanks to the convenient organizer panel in the front compartment.
And in case you just want a simple everyday backpack, go with the AmazonBasics laptop backpack. It is affordable, spacious, and well made, so it’s really a no-brainer. This backpack is suitable for devices up to 17”, it features multiple zippered compartments, lots of smaller pockets, and it has a really comfortable back system.
