Bushnell Legacy

Introducing yet another great pair of binoculars manufactured by Bushnell, the Bushnell Legacy.

An excellent field of view, a short close focus distance, large lenses, and anti-reflective coatings mean you’ll get wide-angle images that are sharp and bright even up close – perfect if you’re animal watching and don’t know how close your subject will appear. And if you want to set up camp and wait for the perfect lighting, they’re tripod compatible too.

Not only will you obtain crystal clear images, but these binoculars can handle some wear and tear. The rubber armor doubles up as a protective layer and as a way to reduce slips. They are also entirely waterproof and can handle being a meter deep for up to half an hour, making these a great option for whale-watching or other water-based sightseeing activities.

And if you’re in the tropics, or anywhere that experiences rapid temperature changes, you needn’t worry about fog as it won’t make its way inside your gear.

Although you probably aren’t worried about them breaking on you, all things considered, they do come with a limited lifetime warranty if you want that added peace of mind over your investment. The only quibbles we have are the price, with these being four times as much as the Bushnell Falcon and twice as much as the Bushnell Powerview binoculars.

They’re also a little on the heavy side, although we think it’s worth it for something this durable. However, unlike the other two models, it’s probably worth the extra cost if you’re likely to be using your gear in various weather conditions.

Bushnell Falcon

The first pair of binoculars to make it to our list of favorites is the Bushnell Falcon. These wide-angle binoculars are, as the name suggests, ideal for hunting, bird-watching, and countless other activities.

Bushnell is a force to be reckoned with in the world of optics, and more than one of their products have made their way into our hit list. This pair is one of the cheapest pairs of binoculars you’ll find by a reputable brand, yet they still offer 10X magnification and have large 50 mm lenses. This means you’ll have nice crisp images as well as a good field of view.

Don’t worry if you need to get up close and personal while you’re on the hunt either, these binoculars can focus on objects as close as 25 ft away – pretty neat huh? They also come with included lens covers and a bag.

There are a few things that set these apart from the higher-end binoculars Bushnell makes. Firstly, they aren’t weatherproof, so you’ll have to keep an eye on the sky when you’re using them out and about. Secondly, they don’t have the largest eye relief, so if you wear thick glasses you might struggle.

Thirdly, the case and step aren’t as high-quality as those of more expensive models – although they are included so we probably shouldn’t complain.

Overall, this is a great bit of kit that comes with solid magnification and a good field of view at a very low price – perfect if you’re new to the world of binoculars and don’t want to jump in at the deep end of the price range.

Nikon ACULON

Even if you’re completely new to the world of binoculars, you’ve most likely already heard of Nikon thanks to their expertise in the imagery of all kinds. The Nikon ACULON are a great all-round introduction to the world of binoculars, and we’re not at all surprised that they’re extremely popular among first-time buyers.

Thanks to an intuitive and easy-to-use focus knob, making adjustments is a walk in the park. We also like the rubber coating that not only protects your gear from any bumps but also provides grip so you’re likely to drop it in the first place.

Weighing under 2 lbs, you’ll barely notice these in your backpack either. The ‘turn and slide’ eyecups, alongside a greater eye relief than the Bushnell Falcon, mean you can find the optimal viewing position whether you wear glasses or not.

The lenses themselves are 42 mm, which is perfectly acceptable for this price range. The 8X magnification is more than enough for beginners too and, unlike lots of lower-end binoculars with this magnification power, they’re tripod-compatible. They’re made of eco-glass too, which another feature that we love, and they’re aspherical so you’ll get bright and clear images.

A couple of drawbacks are the lack of waterproofing and some plastic in the construction, which makes them feel slightly less robust than higher-end models. In general, however, we think we can live with this given the thoughtful design overall.

Wingspace Optics EagleScout

If you want a pair of binoculars built for the outdoors, then you should definitely consider the Wingspace Optics EagleScout.

These binoculars can stand up to water, fog, and even being dropped, although they use an anti-grip material to stop the latter from happening anyway. They’re pretty lightweight and compact too, so you can sling them in a backpack no problem. This makes them an ideal pair of binoculars for those outdoor lovers who will undoubtedly get caught in bad weather from time to time.

The magnification strength and lens size are very good for the price, and the lenses are fully multi-coated so you’ll get bright and colorful images too. On top of that, you get a case, strap, lens covers, and a cleaning cloth thrown in for free.

One minor niggle is that they depend on a ball-bearing system for focus adjustment, and this has been known to fail from time to time. This isn’t always the case, however, and to put your life at rest they come with a lifetime warranty included.

Vortex Optics Raptor

Vortex Optics are a big name in the world of hunting binoculars, and we were pleasantly surprised to find the Vortex Optics Raptor in this price range. This is a very popular choice, and with a large field of view and a Porro prism design giving you broad, crisp images, it’s easy to see why.

The lenses are fully multi-coated too, and we like that you can flex the binoculars to fit a range of faces, making these appropriate for children as well as adults. The eyecups also twist into position, and a right-eye diopter accounts for differences in your eyes, which is super handy if your eyes are anything like mine!

They are also weatherproof, so you can use them when you’re on the hunt in challenging environments, and the close focus is an astounding 15 ft so you can get great images even when you’re up close and personal.

On top of that, they’re lightweight have decent magnification. The main quibble with these is that they don’t feel as sturdy as some of the more durable options out there, and might differ if they take a tumble. There is a strap included to avoid this problem though and, at this price, you might have to accept they won’t last you a lifetime.

TASCO Essentials

The TASCO Essentials are a great choice for an affordable first pair of binoculars.

They have a high magnification and they fold down nice and small. They’re also some of the most lightweight binoculars out there, making them ideal if you’re after something you can slip into your bag for event viewing, such as theatre shows. The lightweight also means they can be handled easily by children, making them suitable for all ages.

If you’d rather use them when you’re out and about, then you’ll love that they come with a case and a strap, although watch out because these binoculars are not weatherproof.

The lenses might not be the biggest on the market, but they are fully BAK4 prism-coated. They also have fold-down eyecups so you don’t have to worry about scratching your lenses when you’re on the go.

Unfortunately, you can’t use these with a tripod but, at this price, that’s not uncommon. Overall though, this is a nifty bit of gear you can take anywhere and will hardly notice it’s there – oh, and we love that it comes in a range of colors too!

Celestron SkyMaster

Introducing our first pair of budget binoculars designed specifically for astronomy… the Celestron SkyMaster.

These binoculars boast an extremely high magnification power for such a low price and, as you might have hoped, they come with a tripod adaptor included. This power and tripod combo mean that you can get some great images while stargazing, or even looking at very distant objects on the ground.

The lenses are large and multicoated and this, alongside the BAK4 prisms, means you can use this bit of kit even in sub-optimal light conditions such as dusk or dawn. One tiny drawback is that sometimes the outer edges of the images produced are a little on the blurry side.

The eye relief is nice and high, which is important when you’ll be using them for long periods of time trying to capture starry images, something that’s made easier by the 70 mm aperture. They are a little on the heavy side, so might not be the best for carrying with you on nature walks, but if you want to set up camp and admire the sky, there really is no better budget option.

Kidwinz Compact

Introducing the first and last of our featured binoculars aimed specifically at children, the Kidwinz Compact binoculars – because it’s only fair we let them play too, isn’t it?

The protruding rubber eye protectors are a key feature on these binoculars that will make sure your little ones don’t go hurting their eyes. There’s also a shock-absorbing rubber coating around most of the body, so you don’t need to panic if you’re kids have butterfingers.

The included neck strap, carrying case, and cleaning cloth mean your kids can get a real feel for how to look after their gear before stepping up to a more expensive model, making them a great introductory bit of kit.

We’re also impressed with the BAK4 prisms in these binoculars – a feature usually reserved for adult gear. The images will be so sharp that you might even find yourself borrowing these from time to time. And the 8X magnification is a massive plus too.

We know that lugging around snacks, suncream, and all the other little extras you need for outdoor trips with your kids can get a little tiring, but at least these only weigh just over half a pound, so they won’t be too burdensome.

Overall, these binoculars are a great way to get your kids off the couch and into a range of outdoor activities.

Bushnell Powerview

Introducing the last but by no means least item on our list of favorites, the Bushnell Powerview.

Thanks to the multiple layers of coating on all lens surfaces, these binoculars maximize light transmission to produce pictures that are nice and bright. They have wide lenses and high-quality BK-7 optics too, so you can get that crisp look we all want on our images.

With 10X magnification and 50 mm lenses you can be sure to spot detail even in poor lighting, and we were pleasantly surprised that the large lenses don’t seem to add much to the overall weight.

We like the instant focus mechanisms and the fact you can use these with a tripod too.  They also feature fold-down eyecups so you can use these no problem even with glasses, however, the eye relief and close focus distance are nothing to write home about.

Overall, for a decent pair of Porro prism binoculars, we think these are very reasonably priced. The major drawback is the lack of waterproofing – you don’t want to try and use these in a downpour – but if you’re more of a fair-weather hobbyist then this shouldn’t be an issue.
