Established back in 1974, and with a commitment to producing high-quality, sustainable, and affordable gear, it’s not surprising that Osprey has become a world-renowned manufacturer of outdoor products.

Although their backpacks were traditionally designed for life in the wilderness, in recent years, Osprey has branched out into the realm of urban bags – because high quality is just as important on the streets as it is on the trail, right?

The Daylite Duffel is one such bag and, as we shall see, it reflects Ospreys founding principles – high-quality, sustainable products at an affordable price. We also love that it comes in a range of capacities (30L, 45L, and 60L), so you can find the right bag for your gear.

Materials and Durability

Osprey Daylite 30L Duffel Bag, Black

Okay, so let’s start with the basics – what is the Daylite Duffel actually made of, and will it stand up to the test of time?

Materials

Nylon and polyester are both popular choices for outdoor gear thanks to their resistance to both water and abrasions. And what do they both have in common? They’re plastics! The Daylite Duffel is constructed of plastic too, making it naturally water repellent and durable.

Despite being able to withstand some bumps and scrapes, the plastic construction means that this duffel has managed to stay nice and light weight (with all sizes weighing under 2 lbs). On top of that, the plastic construction makes this duffel nice and flexible, so you can easily pack it down when you need to store it or even transport it within another bag.

The zippers on this duffel are all high-quality and feature large pulls, so you won’t have any trouble on that front either. As is typical of Osprey, the stitching won’t fall apart from you, and potential weak points have been reinforced for added security.

Overall, while this pack won’t keep your gear dry in a monsoon, for day-to-day life, it can handle some wear and tear plus a few splashes here and there.

Eco-friendly

And now for the exciting bit… the plastic used for the construction of the Daylite Duffel is actually recycled PET – which means it comes from plastic bottles originally! Osprey has essentially found a way to convert plastic waste into high-quality plastic fibers that can be used again to make ultra-durable products – how cool is that?

On top of that, the fabrics used for the main body are also approved by BLUESIGN®, a company that encourages sustainable and environmentally friendly fabric production.

Durable, sustainable, and ethical too… we really can’t fault Osprey on this one.

Organization and Accessibility

Osprey Daylite 30L Duffel Bag, Black

Duffels are typically used for weekends away of trips to the gym or some kind of sporting activity, which means you’ll most likely be carrying a lot of gear. Therefore, the best duffels have some way for you to keep your dirties from your cleans, and a few options for quick-grab items while you’re on the move. So, how does the Daylite Duffel perform in terms of organization and accessibility?

Main compartment

The main compartment is accessed via large zip that spans its entire length, so you can find pretty much anything you need instantly. Although we like this approach, if you prefer a more segmented inner compartment, you might want to consider picking up some dividers separately.

Pockets

Our favorite pocket is the large one that stretches along the length of the bag – it’s perfect for any wet or dirty items, such as swim gear or muddy shirts (obviously, the larger the bag, the more handy this pocket is). Oh, and there’s a handy key clip here too so you don’t have to fumble around on your doorstep when you get back exhausted from the gym or a weekend away, winning.

There’s also a smaller zippered pocket at one end of the bag, which is perfect for things you’ll need to access quickly, such as your phone or travel tickets. We like that this pocket is nice and padded too, so you don’t have to worry about popping your valuables in there.

We were also pleased to see an external water bottle holder (because it’s always a risk putting your water inside your bag!), and it’s cleverly angled to keep hold of your bottle no matter what carrying option you go for (but more on that later).

That’s about it in terms of organizational features but, then again, that’s not what duffels are known for. The only thing missing that we’d really like to see is an interior zip pocket, perhaps on the underside of the lid. But oh well, we guess you can’t have everything.

Carrying Options

Old-school duffel bags traditionally feature simple ‘grab-and-go’ handles, which are fine if you’ll only be carrying your bag on very short journeys. As they evolved, many models began to incorporate shoulder straps, giving you an alternative carrying method. So, what carrying options does the Osprey Daylite Duffel have?

The Daylite Duffel exceeds expectations with not one, not two, but three carrying options. When worn as a rucksack, the extended grab-and-go handles function as normal adjustable shoulder straps.

However, these straps double up as grab-and-go handles when you need them by simply joining them in the center with a solid Velcro patch, and this configuration also lets you carry the bag over one shoulder, neat huh?

On top of that, there are also padded straps at either end of the bag for short movements, like on and off a luggage rack.

Duffel bags are typically designed for short journeys, such as getting on and off public transport or carrying your gear to and from your car. Their grab-and-go handles are fab for hauling them on and off luggage racks but, for walking any kind of distance, people tend to opt for the shoulder strap. This can, however, get tiring after a while.

Plus, it’s not great to have an uneven load across your back. That’s why it’s so great to see a duffel bag you can carry as a backpack. In terms of carrying options, we don’t Osprey could have done a better job.

Carrying Comfort

Now we know that the Osprey Daylite Duffel can be carried in three different ways, but all of these carrying options won’t mean much if the bag is painful to wear. So, how comfortable will you be carrying this bag around on your adventures?

Firstly, let’s get something straight, this isn’t a backpack. It hasn’t been designed for hiking or walking for extended periods with your gear on your back. If it’s a hiking backpack you’re after your looking in the wrong place.

Having said that, Osprey has done a pretty good job with its makeshift backpack. The top of the bag is padded and does a great job of cushioning your back, and we love that the shoulder straps are fully adjustable. There aren’t any chest or waist straps though, so you won’t want to walk too far with a heavy load on your back.

The Velcro handle that joins the grab-and-go handles is surprisingly comfortable, protecting your hands or your shoulder (depending on how you wear it) and it won’t slip out of place on you either.

Overall, don’t be fooled into thinking that you can use this as a large capacity backpack for a day’s hiking. However, the backpack option is a great way to carry your duffel in comfort if you end up having to walk further than planned – it’s certainly far more comfortable than the shoulder or grab-and-go methods.

Furthermore, by using a combination of all the methods, you can avoid getting any strange aches and pains concentrated in one place, winning.

Value for Money

The Osprey Daylite Duffel has tonnes of features that set it apart from your average high-street duffel. Available in a range of capacities, and with three different carrying options, this bag is incredibly versatile and suited to a range of activities.

It’s also constructed from super durable, ethical, eco-friendly materials, which we all know often comes with a high price tag.

Despite this, Osprey has kept the cost of the Daylite Duffel down, and it’s within the price range of even the most budget-conscious shoppers (at the time of writing the costs ranged from around $30 USD to $45, depending on the size chosen and the retailer). On top of that, for a super reasonable price, you also get the Osprey’s famous lifetime warranty thrown in for free.

For these reasons, we think the Osprey Daylite Duffel offers fantastic value for money compared to other models on the market.

Rating

With an overall rating of 90/100, the Daylite Duffel has performed well against our ranking system. It scored full marks for carrying comfort and value for money and just missed out on full marks for materials and durability (because we can’t give a 10/10 for a bag that isn’t fully waterproof).

It dropped a few points for carrying comfort due to the lack of any kind of chest/sternum strap (surely they could add at one removable strap to help spread the load?), although we’ve never actually seen this on a duffel bag so maybe we’re being a bit harsh…

It also dropped a few points for its internal organization (what internal organization) but, overall, we were very impressed with this duffel.

Verdict

So, all things considered, what do we think of the Osprey Daylite Duffel? As far as duffels go, you can’t get much better.

As we’ve mentioned, if you want something you can carry all day long, then this isn’t the bag for you. However, if you’re after a bag for weekend trips or to carrying your gym gear in, then it’s an absolute winner.

The rucksack option is fantastic if you end up carrying your bag for longer than planned, and the various carrying options are great for journeys on public transport.

This bag is also budget-friendly, eco-friendly, and (although it’s not a top priority), friendly on the eye – what more could you ask for from a humble duffel?
