Mt Prest Hike, Aurland (Epic Views Of Aurlandsfjord)

If you are in the Aurland area and would like to get a spectacular view of the Aurlandsfjord then the Mt Prest hike is for you!

In many ways, it is a replacement for a visit to the Stegastein lookout as the views are very similar. However, as you end up significantly higher than that on this hike, it is way better.

Mt Prest Hike Difficulty

Overall the hike is quite short at 2-3 hours, however, it is up, up, and more up. In total, 550 meters (1800ft). So, you need to be in reasonable condition to complete it. Or, you can go as far up as you feel like, as each stage of the ascent gives you a better view of the fjord.

In fact, the very first 15-20 minutes already gets you a clear view of the fjord, similar to the viewpoint down the road – only without the crowds.

Difficult footing on the Mt Prest Hike

There are also a few parts that require good footing due to loose stones and no fear of heights. However, I would not rate it as difficult on a Norwegian scale (however their scale is quite scary).

The path is quite easy to follow 95% of the time. It is only towards the top that you need to keep an eye out for the main path and avoid a few false trails. I followed one on my way down, heading downhill for 5 minutes before I realized it was leading nowhere fast.

A note on hiking time. I completed the hike in around 2 hours, but I was going reasonably fast as I was alone and kind of testing myself. I would give yourself 3 hours hiking time to complete it, and then add time for breaks.

Also, do yourself a favor and wear reasonable shoes (hiking boots or low-cut hiking shoes) as the grip can be difficult at times given the rocks and the habit of Norway to be wet! I did the hike in my Merrel Moab low-cuts, but some may like full hiking boots to be sure.

Getting To The Prest Hike

The drive up to the Mt Prest Hike carpark is the usual narrow Norwegian road with lots of hairpin turns. It is approximately 20 minutes drive from Aurlandsvangen in the valley below.

The car park for the Mount Prest Hike is just up the road from the Stegastein lookout on the left-hand side. There is space for quite a few cars, however, campers are in the habit of using it to stay overnight. So, there was no space when we arrived at 9.30 am.

However, there is also an overflow car park up the road (also a camping spot) with another 5-6 spots.

Warning: The hike is still quiet in the morning, however as the day progresses you will struggle to get a car park in peak season. Something to keep in mind.
