Luggage manufacturers are often trying out new features in their products, and one such feature that is becoming increasingly popular is a built-in scale. Get yourself a suitcase with this feature and you’ll never again have to rely on your bathroom scale to see how much your luggage weighs!
At A Glance: Luggage With Built-In Scale
A built-in scale is a very convenient feature, especially for checking the weight of your suitcase when it’s time to head back home. The only problem is that there aren’t too many suitcases that have this feature, so this detailed guide will tell you about the three best ones, plus a prototype suitcase that I honestly hope gets manufactured eventually!

Beis luggage has become very popular over the past few years, mostly because the brand is owned by Shay Mitchell, the famous actress. It’s a pretty young luggage brand and the popularity is mostly due to the high quality of the cases and the unique features included in the luggage.
One of those features is a built-in weight limit indicator that turns red if your suitcase weighs more than 50 lbs. It’s built into the side grab handle, and it’s an extremely useful feature for checked baggage. I think it’s slightly less useful on carry-ons since it’s practically impossible to pack one to weigh 50 lbs.
Other features of this awesome suitcase include a durable polycarbonate construction, double spinner wheels, and a TSA-friendly lock. The wheel handle is height adjustable and features padding on the handle, for better maneuvering comfort.
Also, the luggage features an expandable capacity with excellent organizational options inside. There’s a divider that doubles as a compression pad and multiple internal pockets, including a waterproof pocket for toiletries or wet clothes. Beis also includes laundry bags for dirty clothes with all their luggage, plus they’re not too expensive for an indie luggage brand.

If you like gadgets and smart items, I think you will love this Heys luggage. It’s a smart suitcase with several features that can make your life a lot easier when you’re traveling. Best of all, the luggage is powered by AAA batteries (not lithium), so it’s TSA-approved and safe for the hold.
The suitcase connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth, and that’s how you access and manage all the smart features. The top grab handle has a built-in scale that tells you exactly how much your luggage weighs, and it’s possible to switch between pounds and kilograms. Then there’s the TSA-approved lock that you control with your phone.
That’s right, there’s no combination on the lock and you need to use your app to lock and unlock it. I personally love this feature, but I also carry a power bank everywhere to ensure I never run out of battery on my phone. The final smart feature of this suitcase is the proximity indicator, which will send an alert to your phone when you’re too far away from your luggage.
In addition to all the awesome smart features, the Heys suitcase also has some great “dumb” features. It’s a polycarbonate suitcase with a telescopic wheel handle, double-spinner wheels, and two generous packing compartments.
The interior of the suitcase is fully lined with a full-panel divider in the top compartment and elastic cross straps in the bottom. There are three pockets inside the luggage, for easy organization.

The TUL suitcase is an idea more than anything, but it’s unique and worth mentioning. The project was originally launched in 2014, but unfortunately, it failed to raise enough money on Kickstarter so it was ultimately scrapped.
However, it’s still possible to fund the suitcase and the website states that the campaign is open for at least another year, so it could be worth it to contact the campaign runners and ask about the possibility of ordering a suitcase.
What’s special about this case is that it has a built-in scale that weighs the luggage while it’s set down. You don’t have to pick up the bag the weigh it, and this is the only suitcase I’ve ever seen with this feature.
It’s an awesome feature because you can check how much the luggage weighs while you’re packing it, and you don’t have to secure everything inside, zip up the bag, and pick it up just to see how you’re progressing.
The luggage also came with a suitcase jacket with high-impact resistance. The jacket would protect the luggage from damage in transport, and it was much more environmentally friendly than just wrapping luggage in plastic.
Other features of this suitcase included a TSA-friendly lock, double spinner wheels, and a height-adjustable wheel handle. The interior was fully lined and equipped with multiple zippered pockets, but not expandable.
The Enkloze X1 suitcase is a good option for durable checked luggage. It’s a zipperless suitcase with an aluminum frame and polycarbonate construction, so it’s got excellent impact resistance. Polycarbonate is a durable material and one of the best options for checked luggage.
The zipperless closure makes this suitcase very secure. It’s got two TSA latch locks that guarantee the safety of your belongings. However, it’s important to note that the aluminum frame is heavy, so this luggage weighs more than your average medium checked case.
The built-in scale turns on when your luggage is upright and it shows you the weight of the suitcase. It’s a convenient feature, although it’s worth noting that some airlines might require you to remove the battery from the scale before boarding.
Other features of this suitcase include double spinner wheels, a height-adjustable wheel handle, and a fully lined interior. There’s a height-adjustable divider in each compartment, plus there’s a total of five zippered pockets inside the suitcase, which is excellent for staying organized.
One downside of this luggage is the shiny exterior. Polycarbonate is prone to scuffs and scratches, and those are more noticeable when the shell is as shiny as this one. Also, there’s no grab handle at the bottom, so picking up the suitcase won’t be ultra-convenient.
There are two types of built-in scales for luggage – a proper scale that will tell you exactly how much your suitcase weighs and a weight limit indicator that only shows you when your luggage exceeds the limit of 50 lbs. Both are functional and convenient to have in checked baggage, but it’s up to you to decide what type of scale you prefer.
Personally, I think the limit indicator is perfectly fine for checked baggage, but I would prefer a proper scale in a carry-on. Many airlines have different limits for the weight of a carry-on bag and a precise scale is significantly more useful than just a limit indicator.
Do you need a carry-on suitcase or a checked bag? While all of the luggage featured here works for checked luggage, I think the Heys American is the best option if you want a carry-on. It’s the only truly smart suitcase featured here, and the precise scale is awesome for ensuring your carry-on doesn’t get checked at the gate.
The Heys carry-on is the only option that measures 21” tall with wheels and handles, so it’s an international carry-on you could take anywhere. The Beis luggage is much bigger than that, and the other options are not even available in a carry-on size.
Not sure which of these suitcases is the best option for you? Then go with one of my top picks, depending on the type of built-in scale you’re looking for!
The Beis luggage is special because it has a weight-limit indicator, and that’s very useful for checked luggage. Just pick up the suitcase and the indicator will stay clear if the luggage weighs less than 50 lbs. It’s also a really good suitcase overall with a polycarbonate construction, padded grip on the wheel handle, smooth spinner wheels, a TSA-friendly lock, and a spacious interior with lots of pockets.
The Heys SmartLuggage is my favorite option out of the bunch, but I’m a sucker for smart features in everyday items. This suitcase connects to your phone with Bluetooth, and you can use the Heys app to see the weight of the luggage and (un)lock the TSA-approved lock.
Also, the suitcase has a proximity sensor that will send alerts to your device if you’re too far away from the luggage. Other features of the Heys suitcase are really good as well, and there’s everything from double-spinner wheels to multiple internal pockets.
