And the tech has become so easy to use, and lightweight and compact, that you can now fit a lot of these super powerful toys in your bag (and sometimes pocket).

But, don’t forget drones are also quite complex as they include motors, a battery, a controller, GPS, camera and more. So, before making a decision on which one you should by…

DJI Mavic Air 2

DJI Mavic Air 2 Fly More Combo & Auto-Activated DJI Care Refresh Bundle-Drone Quadcopter UAV with 48MP Camera 4K Video 1/2' CMOS Sensor 3-Axis Gimbal 34min Flight Time ActiveTrack 3.0, Gray

If you are after the best of the best, then you have come to the right place with the DJI Mavic Air 2.

DJI are constantly improving their drones, which means they are getting smaller, lighter, faster and come equipped with better features. And this is one of the best drones they have to offer.

It combines all the best features of their higher-end drones, but is still small enough to travel around with. But on top of that, it has the gesture control features first seen in their smallest drone (more on that below) the DJI Spark. These features enable you to control the seflie drone without a phone or controller, so you can take amazing selfies with the drone at a distance (move it, raise/lower it, take a video/photo or selfie).

Some of the stand out features include:

  • 48MP photos & 4K/60fps video
  • 34 minutes flight time
  • Gestures & Modes (follow, dronie, rocket and more)
  • Use with or without controller

It also packs down like the original Mavic but is smaller. Not as small as the Spark or Mini, but given the features it is the best of the bunch.

Product Information

  • Size: 7.08 x 3.82 x 3.30 inches / 183 ×253 × 77 mm
  • Weight: 570 g / 20oz
  • Max Flight Time: 34 minutes
  • Max Flight Distance:  18.5km / 11.5 miles
  • Video: 4k

Best Small Drone

DJI Spark

DJI Spark Portable Mini Drone Alpine White (Renewed) (Standard Unit)

The DJI Spark is the latest drone from DJI and packs a huge punch for it’s small size. It is also specifically developed as a cross-over from selfie drone to serious drone. Which shows with the features (so many modes and a controller for example).

It is almost a level above all the other selfie drones out there in terms of features, video quality, and overall build quality.

Of course, there is a trade off because this drone is also a little more pricey than most of the others (except the Mavic Pro) and the arms don’t collapse.

But perhaps you are willing to ignore those downsides for all the stuff you get in this sweet machine:

  • 1080p stabilized video with 12MP camera for stills
  • 16 minutes fly time (by far the most for a drone this size)
  • The most built-in flight modes (Active track, tap to fly, circle above, helix above – rising, dronie -fly away and selfie, rocket – fly straight up and shoot )
  • Gestures: control the drone during selfies (follow hand, come, go, shoot etc)
  • Return to Home: like all DJI’s safety when lost signal, low battery etc
  • Outdoor and indoor flying possible
  • Phone App attaches to the controller

The combination of shooting modes, size and flight time along with the quality of this product is a cut above the competition. Also, the controller means it is far easier to fly and has a far longer range. Something to consider.

For me, the biggest downside of such a seflie drone is you can’t fold the arms.

But, it comes in 5 colors! (I know most of you won’t care, but it’s not often this happens with tech).

Product Information

  • Size: 5.6 x 5.6 inches
  • Weight: 10.6oz / 300g
  • Max Flight Time: 16 minutes (second battery with fly more combo)
  • Max Flight Distance:  109 yards with phone, 1.2 miles with controller!
  • Video: 1080p
  • Colors: Alpine White, Sky Blue, Meadow Green, Lava Red, Sunrise Yellow

Nice Toy

Selfly Flying Phone Case Camera

Flying Phone Case Camera - The Thinnest Ever Pocket Sized Flying FPV Drone Camera – Always With You, Autonomously Flies to Capture Photos and 720p Live video, The only one that really fits your pocket

If you just want the smallest drone possible to enable you to take selfies on the go, then this is a smart option.

It is essentially a phone case that also doubles as a drone. It is 9mm thick and snaps onto the back of your phone. The drone then snaps out of the case and can fly autonomously and with gestures to allow you to capture the moment.

There are some downsides of course, as this is a super cheap and small drone. First, it can only do 720p quality video, which is a little sub-par when compared to what most drones can do today. Secondly, the flight time is a measly 3-5 minutes.

So, it’s enough for a few happy snaps, but no serious drone flying, especially if you waste juice getting your shots.

Product Information

  • Weight. 13oz
  • Flight time: ~5 minutes
  • Video: 720p

ZeroTech Dobby Selfie Drone

Dobby Mini Selfie Pocket Drone with High Definition Camera

The Dobby ZeroTech is a great contender for the best selfie drone because it ticks all the boxes.

It includes impressive features like:

  • 4k and 1080p Video (Electronic Stabilization)
  • Collapsable, with foldable arms and propellers
  • Built-in flight modes (Face tracking, Target tracking, Orbit Mode)
  • Take off from the palm of your hand using voice command, tapping or throw and fly
  • Return to Home: returns to hand with shutoff for safety
  • Standardized USB Charger for easy use with most chargers etc
  • Phone App-controlled

Although they claim you can get serious 4K out of this drone, it’s unstabilized so you won’t get great video unless you use 1080p which is digitally stabilized.

The functionality of the drone is quite impressive too with lots of modes and gestures to help control it either from the app or via your hands.

The other drawback is it only has 8 minute flight time, so you will want at least one extra battery on hand.

But, this is a small and compact drone that is super easy to throw in your bag and use almost anywhere!

Product Information

  • Size: 5.3 x 2.6 x 1.4 inches
  • Weight: 7 ounces (200g)
  • Max Flight Time: 8 minutes
  • Max Flight Distance:  300ft (or 100m)
  • Video: 4K (unstabilized) or 1080p stabilized

Yuneec Breeze Compact Selfie Drone

The Yuneec Breeze is a fun selfie drone that is not fully collapsable but comes with lots of powerful modes to shoot selfies with.

It is a little bigger than some of the other drones because only the propellers are collapsable, which is a bit of a downside.

It includes impressive features like:

  • 4K Video (Electronic Stabilization) 13MP Images
  • Built in flight modes (Seflie, Orbit, Journey – away from you, Follow Me, and Goggles/FPV Mode)
  • Return to Home: returns to hand with shutoff for safety
  • Phone App-controlled

Product Information

  • Size: 11 x 8.7 x 3.1 inches
  • Weight:  13.5oz (385g)
  • Max Flight Time: 8 minutes (with second battery)
  • Max Flight Distance:  300ft (or 100m)
  • Video: 4K or 1080p

Choosing The Selfie Drone For Your Needs

The drones in this review are all quality drones costing a few hundred dollars or more, but the quality, features and flight time can vary a lot. The more you are willing to pay, the better a drone you will get.

However, have a think about what you want to use this drone for (just a few selfies, or long-term getting more into drones, photography or video). It might seem a throwaway investment now, but if you are planning on using it a lot, go for a better model now and enjoy it more!

The following is a quick overview of the kinds of things you want to be thinking about when you read this review, so you can make the best decision – and not have to return the drone or buy another one later :>

Size & Weight

If you plan on taking your selfie drone with you wherever you go, then size and weight are one of the biggest deciders.

You will want the arms to fold, so it is as compact as possible and the drone overall to be quite light. Of course, this all comes at a cost as you often get less of the rest (video, functions etc).

Video and Image Quality

You are generally deciding between 4K and 1080p for these drones, and to be honest for a selfie drone you don’t need 4K.

But, the one thing all these drones don’t have (except the most expensive Mavic) is a mechanical gimbal to stabilize the video. Which is a huge issue. Most of them use electronic stabilization – which means they are cutting/cropping the video to simulate a stable shot. So, if it is not 4K to begin with, then even the 1080p won’t always look that great.

Intelligent Flight Modes

Each manufacturer has a different take on the modes they offer (and that you want) but just keep in mind what you are buying this for. If you want to take lots of selfies, being able to quickly fly away and take a shot of you or a group is crucial. Also such modes as orbit (making a circular shot of you) are very useful.

Another thing to consider is the return to home. Most of them have it, but not all can land in your hand – which is a problem when you are not in a place to land it (long grass, water, rough terrain – it happens a lot, trust me).

Battery Life

Most of the time the battery life is enough for a bit of flying, a few shots and you are done. But, the problem is that you will need to recharge, or carry a second battery if you are going to be using the drone a lot. So, if you know you will use it a lot, look for longer flight times. However, generally, they come with the larger/heavier drones as batteries are what takes most of the space and weight in a drone!

How To Choose A Selfie Drone

Starting at the top, if you are getting seriously into drones and also want selfies, the Mavic Air 2 is the way to go. It folds down quite small and comes with 4K, long flight time, lots of modes and huge range.

The DJI Spark is kind of an in betweener. It is bordering on not being smaller than the Mavic Pro, at least in some areas, but it has lower video quality (1080p) which won’t annoy most selfie takers. It also has the quality of the DJI products, including safety, controller range and handling and lots of modes including ninja-like gestures to help with the “selfie” side of things big time.

If you want to just go for super light and compact then the Dobby or Wingland S6 are pretty close. They both don’t have a great flight time though (7-8 minutes max) and although are both in the mid $300s it’s still alot of money when you consider the more expensive drones last longer and are probably a better buy.

The Yuneec Breeze is in between these and the next level because it is about the same price, and flight time, but does not have the collapsable arms. So that is a big turn off for mid-level selfie drone for me. It is still pretty small though, and the propellers do collapse.

To really decide though you have to weigh up what you think you will do with the drone (a toy, or more serious) where you will use it and how often (flight time/battery) as well as the modes you would love (gestures? intelligent modes).

I can’t decide for you :> But, I hope I have given you enough information to help make the best decision!
