Looking for a way to have Internet access throughout your trip to Uruguay? An eSim is the easiest way to achieve that and this detailed guide covers all your best eSim options for Uruguay!
At A Glance: Best eSim Providers in Uruguay
I’ve included eSim plans from both local and international providers, so there are plenty of data plans to choose from. You’ll also see data plans just for Uruguay, as well as regional eSims that offer network coverage in most countries on the continent. So, let’s get into all the best eSims for both short and long stays in Uruguay!
Airalo is one of the top international eSim providers with plans for virtually every country in the world. Their Uruguay eSim mobile data plans are:
All of Airalo eSims provide you with access to the Claro network, which is one of the best and largest operators in the country. You get access to 4G LTE mobile data for fast browsing and a stable network connection thanks to Claro’s excellent coverage.
The downside of Airalo’s plans is that they’re fairly expensive. They’re virtually double the price of their eSim plans for European countries, and significantly more expensive than similar plans from Maya Mobile and Flexiroam.
Holafly usually offers unlimited data plans and that’s what makes them a popular choice for many travelers who don’t want to stick to a data limit during their travels. However, Holafly doesn’t have unlimited data plans in any South American country, and at best you can get 6 GB of mobile data, valid for 15 days for the price of $44.
That’s the only plan they have for Uruguay, and I personally don’t think it’s worth the money. For just $6 more you can get 10 GB of data from Maya Mobile, which is significantly better. Holafly’s eSims connect to the Movistar network, which is probably the third-largest operator in the country with good coverage.
Nomad has only three eSim plans for Uruguay and they’re not great value for money if you ask me:
This provider doesn’t have the best coverage in South America, with similar eSim plans for nearly all countries in the region. Even the Holafly plan is better value for money than Nomad’s because it’s cheaper and it includes more data. Nomad’s plans are very expensive, and you can’t even know which network provider you will have access to until you’ve arrived in Uruguay.
Nomad’s eSims are operated by Truphone, an international provider that partners with local network operators in various countries, and there’s no information on who they work with in Uruguay.
Flexiroam is an excellent option for an Uruguay eSim, especially if your travel plans also include trips to other countries in the region. This provider offers 13 eSim plans with coverage in Uruguay:
Flexiroam’s eSims will automatically connect to the network with the strongest signal, for faster speeds and the best coverage everywhere in the country. I think this is one of the main selling points of their eSims, especially for travelers who are very reliant on Internet access whether it’s for work or personal stuff.
The only major downside of Flexiroam eSim is that most plans are valid for up to 24 days. Only two of their eSim plans have longer validity periods, and they’re both quite expensive.
Maya Mobile is the best provider for Uruguay eSim. They offer the cheapest data plans out of the bunch, and what’s even better is that all of their eSim plans for Uruguay are valid for 30 days:
Maya Mobile’s eSims connect to the Movistar network, allowing you to stay connected no matter where you are in Uruguay. This is also the only provider with an unlimited data plan with coverage in Uruguay, but I have to point out that the unlimited data is actually for 16 countries in South America.
If you have plans to travel to multiple countries on the continent, and if you are able to split the cost of this eSim plan with a fellow traveler, the Maya Mobile unlimited plan is by far the best value for money you will find.
GigSky is another provider with regional plans for South America:
All these mobile plans are valid in 9 South American countries, Uruguay included. But that’s virtually the only good thing about them because apart from regional coverage, there’s no other reason to consider GigSky as your eSim provider in Uruguay.
The data plans are very expensive, especially compared to the offers from Maya Mobile and Flexiroam. Sure, the 3-month plan from GigSky is cheaper than three of Maya Mobile’s unlimited data plans, but the difference in the data allowance is not even comparable.
There are a few different benefits of getting an eSim in Uruguay, but the main one is that you will have internet access at your fingertips. This can be especially useful if you have plans to travel to multiple regions in the country, especially if that includes remote areas that don’t have any free WiFi coverage.
You will be able to check map directions when necessary, stay updated on weather conditions and local news, and even share your travels on social media.
If you get an eSim from a local provider, you will also have access to a phone number, which can come in handy if you’re ever in a situation where you need to call someone and you don’t have a good Internet connection.
Antel is the largest and best network operator in Uruguay. It’s possible to purchase an eSim from their online store, and you can even activate it before you arrive in Uruguay. The price of their eSim is just $1.7, and then you can top-up your account and purchase one of the many different prepaid plans.
The best plan for a monthly stay in Uruguay is $35 and it includes 20 GB of mobile data for 30 days. There are also cheaper plans that include more data and you can get as much as 90 GB of data, but those plans are valid for a maximum of 10 days.
Movistar is another popular provider in Uruguay, but their eSims are available only in select stores. Their prepaid data plans are excellent for shorter trips to Uruguay because they include up to 90 GB of data for 7 days, with the price of just $6.4. But if you want a longer validity period, at best you can get a data plan with 5 GB valid for 20 days for $8.5
Claro is a prominent network operator in Uruguay, but unfortunately, they still don’t offer eSims to any of their customers.
All smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and laptops that support eSim technology will be compatible with eSims in Uruguay. This includes all Apple iPhone devices starting with the iPhone XR and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 phones and newer, Google Pixel 3 phones and later, and a bunch of other devices from different Android manufacturers (click here for a detailed list).
If you’re not sure whether your device supports an eSim and you want to double-check, the easiest way of doing that is to just dial *#06#. This brings up a list of serial codes for your device and if you can see an EID number on that list, it means that your phone is compatible with eSims.
If there’s no EID number, your device most likely doesn’t support eSims and you will have to look for a physical sim card instead.
How much data you need for a trip to Uruguay depends first on how long you’re staying in the country. If you’re there for a week or two, plans with 1-3 GB of mobile data should be enough. But if you’re staying in Uruguay longer, consider plans with a larger data allowance so you have the ability to use mobile Internet throughout your stay.
Additionally, be honest with yourself about your data usage habits. If you’re checking social media very often and you tend to watch a lot of videos, you will most likely need an even bigger data allowance because videos (YouTube in particular) burn through data more quickly. Travelers who want to work while traveling in Uruguay should also consider larger data allowances of at least 10 GB.
You can get an eSim from an international provider or a local provider in Uruguay. Physical travel sim cards are also available from local operators, and they’re a good option if you have a dual sim phone that can support multiple sim cards at once.
You can spend anywhere from a few dollars to more than $300 for an eSim. Uruguay has a few local providers that offer eSims to prepaid customers, and these are generally the more affordable options with plans from $3 to $35. With international providers, expect to pay at least $20-30 for a decent eSim plan.
To activate your eSim in Uruguay just turn on mobile data and start browsing the internet. You will need to set up the eSim first, and you can do this by accessing the phone’s network settings, finding the option to Add an eSim / Add a Cellular Plan, and scanning the QR code. If there are any issues when you try to set up the eSim, it’s best to contact the support team of the provider.
