Best Luggage With Shelves (Stay Organized)

There are two types of people when it comes to packing – those who fold everything neatly and organize their suitcases by outfits, and those who just throw everything inside and force the luggage closed. I assume you’re the first type of packer if you’ve come here since the second type would never in a million years look for a suitcase with shelves.

Luggage with shelves is great for staying organized when packing, especially if those shelves offer some compression. There are a few different types of shelving systems incorporated into luggage and this detailed review explores all the best options!

Solgaard Suitcase

Solgaard suitcases are pretty amazing thanks to their built-in closet system. One thing I will immediately point out is that the removable closet works best with checked luggage. The closet doesn’t fit in just one compartment of the carry-on suitcase, so the functionality is not quite as good.

But it fits perfectly inside the checked cases, and you get a lot of other space in the luggage. The closet can be attached to a hanger in your closet or to the wheel handle of your suitcase when packing, for maximum convenience. Just extend it fully, pack it to approximately 70% for the best results, and when you’re done just compress the entire thing.

I think you’ll be impressed by how much space you can save with this carry-on closet, and don’t even get me started on the organizational aspect. You can use the different shelves to organize clothing however you like (I would probably do tops on the first shelf, bottoms on the second, accessories on the third, etc.).

In addition to the awesome closet system, the Solgaard luggage also boasts a durable polycarbonate construction, smooth spinner wheels, and a telescopic wheel handle. There’s a TSA-friendly lock on the suitcases, as well as internal dividers that can be helpful when you’re not using the removable closet to organize the luggage.

Pros

  • Durable construction
  • Excellent organizational features
  • TSA-friendly lock
  • Double spinner wheels
  • Height-adjustable wheel handle

Cons

  • The closet doesn’t work well with the carry-on
  • The capacity is not expandable

Pull Up Suitcase

The Pull Up suitcase is a unique option, but definitely, something you should consider if you often go away for long periods. It’s a large checked suitcase that can fit a lot more clothes than your average checked bag thanks to the unique design of the interior.

This suitcase opens up near the top. Unzip the main compartment zipper and you can pull up the shelving system. There’s also another zipper on the front panel that allows you to expose the rest of the shelving system, and it’s worth noting that the TSA locks can lock both of those zippers.

The shelving system is great and it’s huge. Also, the suitcase comes with eight packing cubes that allow you to easily organize everything and they fit the shelves perfectly. What’s great about this system is that you can fit a lot more inside the cubes and the shelves than a standard suitcase, and then you can just compress everything when you push down on the shelves.

On top of that, this unique piece of luggage also features an external compartment for items you want to keep easily accessible while you’re getting around the airport. There’s a TSA-friendly lock, smooth spinner wheels, a height-adjustable wheel handle, and grab handles on the top, side, and bottom for maximum convenience.

Additionally, this luggage features a perfectly flat top, which makes it great for use on the go. If you need a spot to put down your laptop or even a cup of coffee, the top of your suitcase will double as a coffee table for a few minutes.

Pros

  • Unique shelving system
  • Generous capacity
  • TSA-friendly lock
  • External pocket
  • Height-adjustable wheel handle
  • Packing cubes included

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Just one packing compartment
  • Quite heavy

Product Information

  • Dimensions: 29.5” x 22.4” x 14.2”
  • Weight: 19 lbs
  • Capacity: 86 liters

Royce & Rocket Castle Carry On

Royce & Rocket Castle is a suitcase with shelves inside, but it’s very different from the two suitcases I’ve already told you about. The shelves in this luggage are more about helping you use your suitcase as a closet during your trip, and not really for compressing everything inside.

The shelves are secured to the top compartment and they stack when the luggage is opened halfway. So, when you arrive at your destination and you open the suitcase to 90 degrees, you get two shelves to store your clothes. It’s a useful feature for those who prefer to live out of their suitcase, but not the best option if you’re primarily looking for something to help with compression and organization.

The shelves store flat so they don’t take up too much space inside your luggage, but it’s worth noting that they are not removable. Instead, they’re built into the suitcase and secured to the top compartment with rivets.

In addition to the shelving system, this luggage also features a durable polycarbonate construction, smooth and silent spinner wheels, and a TSA-friendly lock. The wheel handle is height adjustable, there are grab handles on the top and side, plus a few internal pockets for even better organization.

Overall, this luggage is certainly not conventional and it’s not the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of luggage with shelves, but I’m pretty sure that there are people who could benefit from this type of suitcase. I could probably benefit from this as well since I often live out of my luggage, but I’m also an over-packer and would prefer a closet with plenty of compressions.

Pros

  • Great for people who never unpack
  • The shelving system stores flat
  • Silent spinner wheels
  • TSA-friendly lock
  • Height-adjustable wheel handle

Cons

  • The shelving system offers no compression
  • Expensive

  • Dimensions: 31" x 21.5" x 11.5"
  • Weight: 15.5 lbs
  • Capacity: 103 liters

Benefits of Using Luggage with Shelves

No Need To Pack Twice

The main benefit of using luggage with shelves is that you don’t have to pack twice. When you arrive at your destination and you take out the shelves, you have easy access to everything inside your suitcase. You don’t have to unpack entirely, and if you just return the items to the shelves after wearing them, you won’t have to pack when it’s time to go home.

You can just put the shelving system back inside the luggage, zip up the suitcase, and be on your way. Also, most shelving systems allow for some compression, so even if you purchased new items you should be able to easily fit them inside the suitcase. And best of all, you don’t have to worry about separating clean from dirty clothes because of the existing shelves!

Organization and Compression

One of the main advantages of luggage with a shelving system is that it’s much easier to stay organized during your trip. I don’t know about you, but my suitcase is usually hidden beneath a pile of clothes by the end of any trip I take. Packing for the return trip is something I don’t enjoy, and I usually just shove everything inside without folding or rolling.

It’s a lot easier to keep your stuff organized when you’ve got shelves in your luggage. Plus, the compression system is really good for making sure everything will fit inside your suitcase when you’re packing for the return trip, even if the clothes aren’t as neatly folded.

On top of that, when you’ve got multiple shelves in a suitcase, there’s virtually no need for laundry bags. Keeping dirty clothes separate from clean clothes is as easy as storing them on different shelves.

Easy Access

Perhaps the best thing about using luggage with a shelving system is that everything on the shelves is easily accessible. You won’t have to rummage through your suitcase to get to that one top you packed at the bottom. Instead, it will be clearly visible on the shelf, and you can easily reach it without messing up your other clothes.

Luggage with Shelves: Our Top Choice

Can’t decide on just one of these suitcases with shelves? Then go with our top choice, especially if you’re looking for checked baggage!

The Solgaard suitcase is really one of the best options for luggage with a shelving system. The removable closet is very functional, and I love that it also compresses the clothes so you’ve got even more space inside.

Plus, you can take out the closet to use while you’re on the trip, and if you just put everything back inside it, packing for the return will come down to just tightening the compression straps and placing the closet back inside the suitcase! It’s also a great suitcase overall with spinner wheels, a TSA lock, and polycarbonate construction.

The only downside is that the removable closet doesn’t utilize the maximum amount of space in the carry-on. Solgaard luggage is the best option if you want to get a large checked bag for long trips.
