Highest Lumen Output

Imalent MS06 LED Flashlight

The Imalent is a monster of a mini flashlight. It’s definitely not for everyone and unless you specifically need something ultra-tough, durable, reliable, and way too bright, there’s no need for you to drop some $200 on this mini flashlight.

But if I just described the type of mini flashlight you’re looking for, then here it is! It has a maximum brightness of 25000 lumens, which is absolutely insane compared to the 300 and 1000 lumens of the more affordable mini flashlights, even the great ones!

The maximum output of the flashlight is called “turbo mode” and I would recommend you don’t use it unless you absolutely have to – it’s going to drain the batteries rather quickly.

You do get five other brightness options from 200 to 9000 lumens, so it should be pretty easy to find a setting that is just right for you. The flashlight also has the option of strobe lighting – be careful with that mode when you have this set on high brightness. You don’t want to give someone a seizure!

The strobe mode at maximum brightness is actually intended for emergency occasions, and that’s how you should use it.

This mini flashlight runs on three rechargeable 4000mAh batteries and they are included in the purchase. It’s also a USB charging flashlight for ultimate convenience. The maximum beam distance of Imalent is 513 meters, and it features a runtime of some 31 hours on the lowest (200 lumens) setting.

If you set it to something more rational like 2500 lumens, which is still super bright, you can get up to 4 hours of run time on a single charge.

The sweet spot is probably the 1200 lumens setting. It’s two or three times brighter than the average mini flashlight, and it can run for eight hours straight on that setting.

The Imalent flashlight has IPX-8 waterproof certification and you can submerge it two meters underwater without any issues. It also features anti-slip holding knobs and an extremely durable aluminum alloy body. Not only is this mini flashlight incredibly durable, but it also promises outstanding performance regardless of your surroundings and the weather conditions.

Pros

  • IPX-8 waterproof
  • USB charging, batteries included
  • Maximum brightness of a whooping 25000 lumens

Cons

  • Thick and heavy
  • Expensive

Product Information

  • Battery Capacity: 3x4000 mAh
  • Brightness: 25000 lumens max
  • Weight: 20.2 ounces

Best Mid-Range Option

Fenix PD36R Mini Flashlight

Fenix PD36R 1600 Lumen USB Rechargeable LED Tactical Flashlight with EdisonBright Charging Cable Carry case Bundle

The Fenix mini flashlight is a great mid-range option for EDC (everyday carry). It is a bit pricey, but it has some excellent features that make it worth every single penny. There’s USB C charging, multiple operating modes, water and shock resistance, and a durable anodized aluminum body.

The pocket clip lets you attach this to your belt so it’s always handy, and you even get a lanyard if you want to wear the flashlight around your neck. The bundle includes a soft carry case, so you don’t have to worry about the hard aluminum body feeling uncomfortable against your torso.

The Fenix tactical flashlight comes with a rechargeable 5000 mAh battery and it supports USB type C fast charging. It takes about 4 hours to fully charge the battery and that’s fine, considering that it has a higher capacity than most modern smartphones. Just a quick 10-minute charge can get you up to five hours of use on low brightness, which is great for emergency use.

Also, the Fenix has a battery level indicator on the body, which is a first so far. It’s great because you can always know exactly how much charge is left in the flashlight and when it’s time to plug it in again.

One thing I like about this flashlight is that it lets you use it at maximum brightness for prolonged periods of time if you want. You can get almost three hours of use in turbo mode that outputs 1600 lumens, which is pretty impressive. And if you lower the intensity to something more reasonable like 350 lumens, you can get about 8-9 hours of constant use.

The beam distance at maximum brightness is 283 meters, which we can actually compare to the flashlights of a car. That should give you a good idea of just how amazingly bright the Fenix mini flashlight is.

Pros

  • Water and shock resistant
  • Battery level indicator
  • Maximum output of 1600 lumens

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Only one battery included

Product Information

  • Battery Capacity: 5000 mAh
  • Brightness: 1600 lumens
  • Weight: 9.6 ounces

Streamlight 66604

Streamlight 66604 250-Lumen MicroStream USB Rechargeable Pocket Flashlight, Box, Black

The Streamlight mini flashlight is a good mid-range choice. It has a maximum brightness of 250 lumens which might not be exceptional, but with a beam distance of 68 meters, it should illuminate a good chunk of the path in front of you. That’s why this flashlight is a good option for casual indoor and outdoor use, but I wouldn’t recommend it for extreme outdoor adventures.

It features an anodizing aluminum housing, for excellent durability. The lens is made from scratch-resistant polycarbonate, which happens to be one of the toughest and most durable plastics on the market.

This flashlight has a rechargeable battery with a capacity of 350 mAh, which can get you about 3.5 hours of run time on the lowest setting. If you set the brightness to the maximum intensity of 250 lumens, you will only get about 1.5 hours of use.

That is far from ideal, and it’s the main reason why I don’t recommend this flashlight to people who need something to take on long hikes and camping trips. But if it’s just for occasional use at home or for work I think you will be fine. Especially since it’s USB rechargeable and you don’t have to purchase batteries constantly.

This mini flashlight has a versatile hat/pocket clip, which is quite convenient. I especially like that you can secure it to a hat since it effectively means that the Streamlight can be a solid replacement for a standard headlamp.

Pros

  • Tough and durable construction
  • Beam distance of 68 meters
  • USB charging

Cons

  • Battery life is not great
  • Maximum brightness intensity is only 250 lumens

Product Information

  • Battery Capacity: 350 mAh
  • Brightness: 250 lumens

AceBeam PT10-GT Pen Flashlight

The AceBeam pen flashlight is great for people who want something so tiny that can carry it in their pocket. It’s a pen flashlight with a pocket clip, so you can always easily carry it on your person. And it is surprisingly bright for such a small flashlight, with a maximum brightness of 400 lumens!

The beam distance is 72 meters at maximum brightness, which is quite good. And you can get about 28 hours of use of it, but only if you set the brightness to a low setting. The flashlight comes with a rechargeable battery that has a 700 mAh capacity and a micro USB charging port.

You can just plug it into your laptop to charge it, which means you must take the battery out of the flashlight every time you want to charge it. It’s not the most convenient setup, but it’s okay for the price.

However, it’s worth noting that you can get those 28 hours of use only when the brightness is set to 5 lumens, which gets you a beam distance of just 6 meters. That might be okay for casual use at home, but it’s far from what anyone looking for a flashlight for hikes and hunting needs.

It’s not specified exactly how long the battery lasts on the highest brightness setting, but I think it’s safe to assume it will average about an hour, maybe two at the most.

Another great thing about the AceBeam pen flashlight is that it is rated IPX-8 waterproof. You can safely use it in heavy rain, but it’s not recommended to submerge it underwater. The body of the flashlight is made from aluminum, so it’s tough and durable.

Pros

  • Very small and lightweight
  • IPX-8 waterproof
  • Adjustable brightness intensity

Cons

  • You have to take out the battery to recharge it
  • Disappointing battery life at maximum brightness

Product Information

  • Battery Capacity: 700 mAh
  • Brightness: 400 lumens
  • Weight: 1.48 ounces

Streamlight Stylus Pro

Streamlight 66118 Stylus Pro 100-Lumen LED Pen Light with Holster, Black

The Streamlight Stylus Pro is another awesome pen flashlight. This particular model of the flashlight is available in a few different versions, so you should be able to pick up something that’s exactly right for you. One version runs on AAA batteries and the other one comes with a USB rechargeable battery, so pick up the model that you think will work better for you.

USB charging is more convenient for use at home, especially if you don’t want to buy new batteries every other day. But if you want the flashlight for hikers and other outdoor use, AAA batteries actually better in that case. The flashlight runs for 3.5 hours max on the lowest brightness setting of 90 lumens – with AAA batteries you can always have a backup option if it runs out of juice.

The maximum brightness of the Streamlight Stylus Pro is 350 lumens, which can illuminate some 110 meters of the path in front of you. But the flashlight can run for only about 1.5 hours on the maximum setting – at least that’s the rating for the USB rechargeable option. It’s far from ideal, and I wouldn’t recommend it for prolonged outdoor use.

This very small and lightweight flashlight features a durable aluminum housing and boasts IPX4 water resistance. You can’t really use it underwater, but it can handle light rain and snow without any major issues. It’s also worth noting that the Stylus Pro has a convenient pocket clip that lets you attach it to your belt or hat for easy use and carrying. It weighs less than two ounces, so it really is a great tiny, portable option.

Pros

  • Durable aluminum body
  • Available in options that use AAA or a rechargeable battery
  • Very small and lightweight

Cons

  • Battery life is not great
  • Not the best option for prolonged outdoor use

  • Battery Capacity: Not specified
  • Brightness: 350 lumens max

Pocketman 900LM Ultra Slim Mini Flashlight

Pocketman 900LM Ultra Slim Portable XPE-R3 Mini LED Flashlight Belt Clip Pen Light Tactical Torch(9 CM),4 Pack

The Pocketman 900LM is a pack of four mini flashlights that retails for about $20.This is one of those options that will do if you’re in a pinch and need a mini flashlight that just works, without any extra features. The pack of four comes down to less than $5 per flashlight, which is pretty good value for money.

However, you don’t get any batteries with these flashlights, and you will have to purchase those separately if you want to use them as soon as they arrive. All four flashlights use the same type of battery – a simple AAA alkaline battery will do the trick.

It’s worth noting that during non-stop use on the higher brightness settings you can get 2 hours of battery life max. You might want to get some rechargeable batteries – it’s definitely cheaper in the long run, compared to the standard alkaline ones.

Additionally, the Pocketman mini flashlight is made from aircraft-grade aluminum. It is resistant to water and high temperatures, and it’s surprisingly durable and well-made for such a small and affordable item. Especially considering that the max brightness of the Pocketman is 900 lumens – that’s impressive for a flashlight that essentially costs $5!

On top of that, this tiny flashlight even has a pocket clip, so you can attach it to your belt or hat. It’s perfect for convenient carrying since you can literally have it in your pocket. And the clip also attaches to the brim of a hat, for easy hands-free use.

Pros

  • Good value for money
  • Great brightness intensity
  • Small and lightweight

Cons

  • Batteries not included
  • Battery life is not great

The flashlight is made from aluminum and it is very lightweight. The maximum beam distance of this beast is 220 meters, which is surreal. Coast G22 Flashlight

COAST® G22 100 Lumen Bulls-Eye™ Spot Beam LED Penlight, Battery Included

The Coast G22 flashlight is the perfect mini flashlight for use around the home. It’s got an output of 100 lumens, which is just enough for household use. The maximum beam distance at the highest output is 55 meters, and the total runtime on the highest setting is 105 minutes.

This is a very affordable flashlight, so the best solution for people on a tight budget who just need a small but powerful mini lamp for emergency use. It runs on AAA batteries and they’re included in the purchase.

This mini flashlight is also IP54 water and dust-resistant, plus it’s certified for drops up to 1 meter. Overall, it’s a great affordable flashlight, but definitely not the best option if you need something ultra-bright for late-night outdoor activities.

GearLight TAC LED Flashlight Pack

LUMINTOP Tool AAA Mini EDC Flashlight, Pocket-Sized Keychain Flashlight, Super Bright 130lm OSRAM LED, 3 Modes, IP68 Waterproof, Best Tools for Camping, Hiking, Hunting, Backpacking, Fishing and EDC

The GearLight flashlight pack includes two compact flashlights made from military-grade aluminum. Both flashlights are extremely durable and feature an LED rating of 1040 lumen. In reality, the lumen output is 300-800 depending on the setting, which is bright enough for indoor and outdoor use.

The flashlights run on AAA batteries or one 18650 battery, but none are included in the purchase. It’s worth noting that the brightness of the flashlight depends on the type and quality of batteries in it, so don’t use cheap batteries if you want them to shine really bright.

Both batteries have a belt clip on the side, plus you get two lanyards with them, for easy carrying. The flashlight pack is priced fairly, and it’s pretty good value for money considering you get two really good flashlights.

  • Good value for money

LUMINTOP Tool AAA Mini EDC Flashlight, Pocket-Sized Keychain Flashlight, Super Bright 130lm OSRAM LED, 3 Modes, IP68 Waterproof, Best Tools for Camping, Hiking, Hunting, Backpacking, Fishing and EDC

The Lumintop flashlight is a good option if you need a very small but powerful flashlight. It’s no bigger than a pen with a maximum lumen output of 130, which is more than enough for casual outdoor use. The flashlight has three operating modes (low, mid, and high), and a runtime of 30 minutes on maximum brightness.

Use it on the low setting and you’ll be able to get up to 36 hours of battery life, which isn’t too bad. The flashlight is IPX-8 waterproof and it runs on a single AAA battery. It comes with a key clip and a pocket clip, although I have to point out that the pocket clip is practically useless because it’s not the best quality.

Overall, if you want a compact but powerful flashlight it’s a really good choice, especially at this price point.

  • Compact and easy to carry
  • Powerful, especially for the size

Cons

  • The battery life could be better

What To Look For

What’s It For?

Do you need a serious mini flashlight or just something for household use? Depending on the exact use you have in mind, there are a few different things to consider.

Pretty much any mini flashlight will do for casual household use, so you’re fine with anything featured here. But if you’re getting a flashlight for hiking or hunting, it’s important to look at the battery life of the gadget, as well as the brightness intensity and range.

Look for info on the run time of all these flashlights – I’ve mentioned it whenever the manufacturer stated that specification. If you need something for long hikes in the dark or night hunting trips, a 2-3 hour run time just won’t cut it. But, bear in mind that most of the objects featured let you adjust the brightness intensity and you can conserve some battery life with lower brightness.

Another thing to consider is the type of battery in the flashlight. If it uses a classic AA(A) battery, then you can easily just swap it out when it runs out of juice. I normally recommend getting some rechargeable batteries if that’s the case, and some of the flashlights even come with them.

But if it’s a USB flashlight, then it’s not so easy to get more battery life out of it. USB flashlights are convenient for use at home, but I wouldn’t recommend them for outdoor adventures.

Brightness Intensity

One of the key differences between the mini flashlights featured here is brightness intensity or the number of lumens it can output. You’ve seen flashlights that output anywhere from 100 lumens to 25000 lumens, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you should just pick up a flashlight with the highest output you can find.

While higher outputs are usually better, not everyone needs a flashlight with 1000+ lumens. In fact, 600 is kind of the golden standard – it’s bright enough for most uses, but not so bright that it will drain the battery too fast. And that’s another thing to keep in mind – the higher the brightness, the shorter the battery life.

Flashlights that aren’t too bright are perfectly fine for casual household use. Even 100 lumens is enough to get you through a power outage! But if you want something for hiking and camping, you should look for brighter options. That’s largely because the brighter flashlights have a longer beam distance and they make it easier to get around in the dark.

It’s also important to note that most flashlights featured here have several brightness modes, so you can adjust the brightness intensity you need at any given time. This is great for preserving battery life – running the flashlight on high all the time results in a much shorter battery life than advertised.

Price And Quality

This review featured mini flashlights from $5 to $200. While it’s true that quality dictates price, you should be entirely sure whether you actually need a sturdy $150 flashlight.

If you want a gadget just to occasionally check on the attic or to use when the lightbulb in your bathroom burns out, you will get by just fine with a cheaper option. I would recommend getting something in the $20-40 range since those really cheap flashlights don’t usually last too long.

On the other hand, if you need a bright, sturdy flashlight that you can use in all weather conditions and that has a great battery life, expect to pay for more. And you shouldn’t hesitate about splurging on quality objects – if it’s for hiking, camping, or hunting, a great flashlight is essential.

If you ever find yourself alone in a forest and it’s pitch black, you will be ecstatic you decided to splurge on a mini flashlight.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is the meaning of lumen?

A lumen is a unit of measure that indicates just how bright something is. The more lumens a flashlight has, the brighter it shines – it’s as simple as that. Brighter also means that a flashlight will illuminate a bigger area, but that can depend on other features as well.

How many lumens do you need for a good flashlight?

That depends on what you’re using the flashlight for. Generally speaking, 100 lumens is usually enough for basic household and outdoor use. If you spend a lot of time hiking or riding bikes at night, you should look into brighter flashlights with an output of 150-500 lumens.

Do LED flashlights need batteries?

Yes, LED flashlights need batteries in order to work. There are of course some exceptions to this rule, but most LED flashlights are battery-powered. The main difference between LED and other types of flashlights is that LED lamps will last longer, so they ultimately need fewer batteries.

What brands make the best quality flashlight?

Fenix, Imalent, and ThruNite are some of the best flashlights out there. Imalent manufactures the brightest flashlight available, with an output of 100,000 lumen. Fenix and ThruNite are both known for manufacturing bright, durable, and reliable flashlights, but they’re not cheap.

Best Mini Flashlight: Our Top Picks

Not sure which mini flashlight is best for you? Pick up one of our top three choices depending on what you need it!

The Fenix mini flashlight is a great overall option. It features an excellent battery life with USB type C fast charging, an output of 1600 lumens max, and a durable shock and water-resistant aluminum body. This flashlight can work for everything from late-night hikes to changing a tire in the middle of the night.

It’s also great for household use, especially since only 5 minutes of charging can get you several hours of use on a lower brightness intensity! And with a battery level indicator, it will rarely run out of juice!

If you want the brightest mini flashlight that exists, that would be the Imalent flashlight. With a lumen output of 25000 max, this mini flashlight is bright enough to blind the average person if you point the beam at them. The maximum output is only for emergencies though, as it would drain the battery in a matter of seconds.

But the other operating modes can get you up to 9000 lumens, which is still more than any other mini flashlight. There’s also the durable body, good battery life, and excellent water resistance that make Imalent one of the best options out there.
