London Fog Luggage Review (We Have All The Details)

London Fog has been around since the 1920s making jackets and nowadays they produce luggage.

But is London Fog luggage any good? Is it affordable? And most important of all – is it worth the money? I’ll answer all those questions in this detailed review of London Fog luggage.

You’ll find out the good and the bad – what people love about them, and what they hate. And hopefully, by the end of the review, you will have gathered enough information to decide for yourself whether this luggage is for you or not. But only if you keep reading…

London Fog Luggage

It’s time to actually talk about the luggage! First I will tell you about the traditional suitcases, and we will check the garment and duffel bags towards the end.

Each collection features three regular suitcases, all of which have pretty much the same features. So, what you read about the 21″ Cambridge II suitcase will apply to the 29″ as well, and that’s why I’ve decided to divide this review into short reviews of the collections first. Enjoy!

Fun fact time – did you that in the 1970s, two-thirds of all raincoats sold in the United States were London Fog raincoats? How cool is that! Today they have expanded their product range to include so much more than just raincoats, and they have even developed their own fabrics.

Cambridge II Luggage

The Cambridge II collection is actually the only London Fog luggage that features a real carry-onThe smallest suitcase is 20″ tall, and even with wheels, it can fit in the overhead compartment. All of the luggage in this collection is made of woven houndstooth material, which is fused with EVA foam to make the suitcases even more durable and lightweight.

Previously, London Fog carry-on suitcases couldn’t really be used as carry-ons. Well, the company caught onto that as well and completely redesigned their Cambridge collection. The bulky 21″ suitcase became a sleek 20″ carry-on – they reduced its size specifically to make it conform to most airlines’ requirements for in-cabin luggage.

Now about the features. The entire Cambridge II collection boasts double spinner wheels, which will give you excellent maneuverability of your luggage.  And the telescopic wheel handle will surely help make the steering as effortless as possible.

All three suitcases feature a single packing compartment which is expandable for additional packing capacity. They have double dividers inside the packing compartments, with pockets on both sides! And on the front panel of the suitcase features a large zippered pocket, as well as a couple of slip pockets for your shoes. However, these pockets are pretty small – they can fit smaller shoes easily, but anything over a US9 (Men’s) won’t fit that well.

You can get two extra inches of packing space if you decide to expand your suitcase. And London Fog was kind enough to mark their expansion zippers, so you will easily differentiate between them and the ones that open the main compartment.

You can choose between Olive and Black/White, but both are very light. And, for some reason they attract dirt like magnets, so you can expect your suitcase to get filthy even after one trip. But, getting a sleek suitcase cover would totally make that issue go away, and it is something to consider.

You can check out the exact dimensions of all three suitcases, their weights, and prices below.

Kensington Luggage

The Kensington collection from London Fog also features three traditional suitcases. You can choose between two colors – Blue Tan Plaid and Bronze, both of which are made from the same material and look pretty good. The fabric used in these suitcases was fused with EVA foam to improve the durability and sturdiness of the luggage, just like we saw in the Cambridge II collection.

Compared to the Cambridge II, these suitcases are generally lighter. They also feature an additional external zippered pocket, which allows for slightly better organization. However, the smallest suitcase in this collection is 21 inches tall without the wheels, and it’s a gamble whether or not you will be able to bring it inside the cabin. Many reviews said that they were forced to check the bag because it is over 23 inches tall with its wheels.

Every Kensington spinner comes with four single spinner wheels and can be expanded by two additional inches.

All luggage is also fully lined inside, with London Fog signature lining. And you will get a 3-1-1 removable toiletry bag with the suitcase, which adds to its value.

What about the packing compartment? Well, it is pretty spacious and it is equipped with two tie-down straps that are supposed to hold your luggage in place. There aren’t any pockets inside the compartment itself, but there is a large zippered pocket on the front panel of the suitcase. And two small slip pockets for your shoes, which you can use for pretty much anything you want.

Kingsbury Luggage

This is the only London Fog collection that features hard shells. And it is also their only collection that features just suitcases and no additional duffel or garment bags. Kingsbury luggage is made of lightweight polycarbonate, and it is available in two colors: Titanium and Coffee. I have to say that I prefer the steel grey of the Titanium version.

The Kingsbury luggage features two fully lined packing compartments, as you would expect in a hard shell. One side is equipped with elastic tie-down straps, while the other features a divider that will keep all of your clothes in place. The downside of the suitcases is that there are no pockets inside. And since these are hard sides, they also don’t have any external pockets, which means that it will be somewhat difficult to stay organized when packing.

They have double spinner wheels, a telescopic wheel handle that locks into place, and an expandable capacity. And they also have an attractive price tag for polycarbonate luggage – the largest Kingsbury suitcase costs just over $100, which is definitely worth it.

The smallest piece of luggage in this collection is dubbed a carry-on or overnight bag, but I couldn’t find its dimensions with wheels. I did however notice when going through the reviews, that many people stated they were able to bring this suitcase inside the cabin, and that it fit perfectly in the overhead compartment.

A general issue with hard side luggage (and polycarbonate in particular) is that the shell gets scratched easily. But, London Fog included a smart plaid design of the shell with grain finish on these suitcases. The design improves the scratch-resistance of the suitcase, so it doesn’t look worn and torn after just one flight.

The wheel handle is not as sturdy as it should be. It is pretty much the only thing people didn’t like about this suitcase, so be sure to be gentle with it. And at least it can be adjusted to several different heights, so everyone can get it to fit them perfectly!

Knightsbridge Luggage

The London Fog Knightsbridge collection features three stunning softshell suitcases. At first glance, they look extremely similar to the Kensington collection, but there is one thing that sets these particular suitcases apart from the others. They are the lightest luggage London Fog has to offer, with the 29″ suitcases weighing less than a Kensington 25″. Now we’ll talk about their features.

The smallest suitcase is 23 inches tall with wheels. American Airlines will accept inside the cabin without an issue, but other airlines might not. Of course, that is going to depend on how crowded the plane is, and how big their overhead compartments generally are.

The Knightsbridge suitcases all feature single spinner wheels, a telescopic wheel handle, and three carry handles. And you also get one large external pocket, which is great for any items you want to have handy at the airport.

The packing compartment of this luggage is completely lined with beautiful blue London Fog lining. And the capacity of all three of these suitcases is expandable by two inches, which will come in handy if you like to do some shopping while you are abroad. But, you should have plenty of space to pack even without expanding the bag.

There are two compression straps inside that will hold all your clothes in place and ensure that it doesn’t get jumbled. And you also get a 3-1-1 toiletry bag along with your suitcase, which not only adds to the value of the bag but also helps with organization. It also comes with a large zippered pocket on the front panel and two slip pockets for shoes.

Overall, this suitcase is a great choice if you are looking to get the lightest one. Just keep in mind that the plaid design is also really light, and it can get dirty very quickly. I would suggest you go for the solid blue one – it is darker, and even if gets dirty, it will not be as obvious.

Wheeled Garment Bags

Do you often travel for business and therefore need to carry a lot of clothing that can’t get wrinkled? Then consider getting a garment bag. It is designed to hold clothing on hangers, which you have to transport very carefully – like suits! London Fog currently offers two garment bags; one is from the Kensington collection and the other one is from the Cambridge II collection.

So, the actual height of the bag when closed is 22 inches. But, it opens up like a book, and when it is fully opened it is 44 inches tall. Anyway, I will show you a photo of what the bag looks like when it’s open, so you’ll get the idea.

Both the Cambridge II and the Kensington garment bags have in-line skate wheels and a telescopic wheel handle. They also look very much alike inside – they feature the main compartment for your hanging garments with a few slip pockets for your shoes and a fold-down flap with a few separate zippered pockets and a hook for a hanger. So, you can fit several hanging garments inside each of these London Fog bags.

There is a slight difference in the weight of the bags – the Cambridge II one is about a pound lighter even though it is half an inch wider. And it also has one additional external pocket – both bags have a zippered external pocket, but the Cambridge II bag also has an external slip pocket. This is great for any items you want to have handy at the airport – passport and boarding pass are the first things that come to mind.

Under The Seat Bags And Duffels

Now we are going to check out a few of London Fog’s smaller carry-ons. These are great for people who are traveling with a large checked bag and need something small and convenient to bring inside the cabin, but a carry-on suitcase is too much.

As you can see, they are pretty much the same on paper. They are all the exact same size, and the weight difference is so small that it’s negligible. And like their name says, all of these bags are designed to comfortably fit under your airplane seat. But, there is one big feature that sets apart the Cambridge II under seat bag from the others – double spinner wheels. The other two bags have in-line skate wheels, and you have to tilt the bag to get the wheels rolling.

Fortunately, the Cambridge II bag goes a step further and features those awesome wheels that can turn 360 degrees each, which when combined with the telescopic wheel handle give you superb maneuverability of your luggage. And this bag also features a luggage strap that allows you to put it on top of your larger suitcase and secure it to the handle.

The other features are the same on all three bags. They have a padded tablet compartment and multiple zippered pockets for easy organization. There are also a few waterproof pockets, which are perfect for toiletries or wet garments.

All three bags also have the same amount of external pockets – two on the sides and two on the front. The only thing that differs is the position of the front pockets – the one on the Cambridge II bag is somewhat hidden, while the ones on the other two bags are not.

Kensington Wheeled Club Bag

LONDON FOG Kensington 20 Inch Wheeled Club Bag, Blue Tan Plaid, 20-Inch

And there is one more bag to mention – the Kensington Wheeled Club Bag. It is small, stylish, and fits into most airlines’ overhead compartments and you can wheel it around the airport! Check out its specs and price below.

This bag is great for shorter trips where you don’t really need to bring a suitcase. It’s large enough to fit a few days worth of clothes inside it, and it is small enough to be a carry-on bag. There isn’t much to say about this particular bag – it is fully lined inside and has one zippered pocket. The wheels and the telescopic handle are the best things about it!

Buying Guide & Tips

Type/Size Of The Luggage

Each of the four different London Fog luggage collections has at least three different products in it. Most have more, and even include garment bags and wheeled duffel bags. But, you should know beforehand how large a suitcase you need, so that you can easily find just the right one for you.

The first thing you need to figure out is done you want a checked bag or a carry-on, and then you need to decide between a travel bag and a traditional suitcase. Here’s why: London Fog features a 21″ carry-on suitcase in every collection. However, the bag is 21″ tall without its wheels. When you add in the height of the wheels, the overall size of the bag is around 23-24″, and not every airline will accept it inside the cabin. When you check out the reviews of the bags, you can see that many people were forced to check their 21″ London Fog suitcases, which kind of defeats the purpose of a carry-on.

I will divide the entire review by collections, and then by types. First, we are going to check out the features of their traditional suitcases, and then we will move on to the wheeled duffels and travel bags. Oh, and if you are desperate for a bag you don’t have to check, I suggest you jump straight to the duffels – there are several different ones to choose from, ranging from 15-20″ in size.

Hardshell Or Softshell?

If you are a frequent flyer, you will generally want to get a hardshell suitcase. They are much more resilient to the tough love of baggage handlers than softshells and they are more durable. But if you don’t fly that often and prefer to travel by car or train, then the softside vs. hardside difference is not that important to you.

London Fog luggage features one hardshell collection – the Kingsbury. If that’s what you are looking for, you can use the quick navigation to jump straight to that part of the review. All of the other collections that I’m going to tell you about feature softside suitcases, and there is a lot of variety.

No Locks!

None of the London Fog bags in this review feature any type of lock. That is not a big deal if you are traveling by car or train, or if you are looking for a suitcase that you can bring inside an airplane cabin. However, it is never a good idea to get checked bags without locks, because you never know who might try to tamper with them.

You can always buy a padlock for the zippers if you want to ensure the safety of your luggage. It will certainly help you have some peace of mind while you travel, and keep the thieves away.

How Good Is London Fog Luggage?

It is pretty good, but it is not perfect. For one thing, I am not a fan of the no lock thing – I like my luggage safely locked and I do not find peace of mind knowing that someone could only pry it open. But I know that not everyone is like that, and if you don’t really care about the lack of locks, then London Fog is a good choice for you.

Since there are so many different bags and suitcases we checked out in this review, I will pick out the best ones I found.

I have to say that the entire Cambridge II collection is up at the top. They really put thought into it when redesigning it, from the spinner wheels on the 15″ under-seat bag, to the abundance of pockets inside the regular suitcases. And they even changed the size of the smallest suitcase, to ensure that it can be used as a travel carry-on bag – how thoughtful! I would definitely say that this collection is the best London Fog has to offer, at least in terms of design features.

  • Designed to comfortably fit underneath most standard airline seats, this versatile case can be used as a rolling tote, business case or an Overnighter
  • Padded tablet compartment and zippered organizer pockets and hidden locking aluminum handle tubes have channels for added strength

But in terms of weight, the Knightsbridge collection is by far the winner. I like to say that, when packing a suitcase, every ounce counts. And if you agree with me, then this is one you won’t regret. You might not have as many organizational features as you would in a Cambridge II suitcase, but you will be able to bring more clothing with you and still stay within the airline’s weight limits. Oh and I think I forgot to mention that this is their most affordable collection as well.
