Osaki Tokyo Luggage Review (Inexpensive But Good Quality?)

Osaki Tokyo is an affordable luggage brand available for purchase at select retailers in the United Kingdom. The suitcases are affordable and appear solid at first glance, but are they actually any good? That’s what I’ll be examining in this detailed review of Osaki Tokyo luggage!

Osaki Tokyo Luggage Basic Specs

Materials, wheels, handles, and locks are the basic features of any suitcase, and that’s what I’ll be talking about in detail in this section of the review.

Materials & Durability

The Osaki Tokyo luggage is manufactured from Polypropylene. It’s a type of plastic with good durability, but it’s not the toughest material for luggage. Polypropylene is known for its light weight, and luggage manufactured from this type of plastic tends to be lighter than more durable suitcases made from polycarbonate.

That’s absolutely true for this Osaki Tokyo suitcase. The carry-on weighs just 5.7 lbs, which is absolutely impressive for a suitcase this size. Keep in mind that most cabin-sized suitcases weigh around 7-8 lbs. This is great because it allows you to fit more items inside the luggage while still staying under the weight limit for carry-ons.

Polypropylene also has really good scratch resistance. This type of plastic is often used in the automotive industry because of its excellent scratch resistance, so you can expect the luggage to look brand new for a while.

Another thing to note is that durability is not super important if you’re just looking for carry-on luggage. Suitcases that can be stored in the cabin are not put through the same rigorous conditions as checked luggage.

I’ve owned an ABS plastic carry-on for years, and that’s the cheapest and least durable type of plastic for luggage. It’s still as good as new on the outside, even after dozens of flights, road trips, and bus rides.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to get a checked suitcase, the Osaki Tokyo case might not be the best option out of the bunch. Sure, it’s good value for money and it’s super lightweight, but the shell is not very impact-resistant and there are no corner reinforcements on the body. Also, there’s very little color variety.

Spinner Wheels

This Osaki Tokyo luggage is equipped with large double-spinner wheels for effortless maneuverability. The wheels are quite big, and that’s great because it means they can easily roll over cracks and holes in floors without getting stuck.

Spinner wheels allow you to maneuver a suitcase in any direction you want, and they’re a lot more convenient than classic in-line skate wheels. Double-spinner wheels are generally better than single-spinner wheels because they’re less likely to get stuck in cracks, but it’s worth noting that they often add a little extra weight to the luggage.

Although these wheels roll smoothly and silently on airport floors, you’ll make a lot of noise if you try rolling the suitcase on uneven terrain. Spinner wheels also don’t perform well on cobblestone, so keep that in mind if you’ve got plans to travel to European countries.

Handles

The Osaki Tokyo carry-on suitcase features two handles. It has a telescopic wheel handle as well as a low-profile grab handle at the top. This luggage doesn’t have any handles on the side or bottom, which can make it somewhat difficult to pick up and place in an overhead bin.

The wheel handle is height adjustable and can be locked in multiple positions, so it should be easy for most travelers to set it up to a height that fits them best. The handle locks easily with a push of the button, and it features a curved design for a more comfortable grip.

It’s also worth noting that the larger versions of this suitcase feature an extra grab handle on the side, but still no handles at the bottom.

Main Compartment

This suitcase opens up clamshell style to reveal two packing compartments. The luggage interior is fully lined with a purple polka-dot fabric, which adds a bit of color to the suitcase.

The bottom compartment is equipped with adjustable tie-down straps that will keep your clothes in place. The top compartment features a full-panel zippered divider, with a large mesh pocket for organization. It’s worth noting that this is the only pocket inside the Osaki Tokyo suitcase, and that’s probably the biggest downside of the luggage, at least for me.

I prefer having multiple pockets in a suitcase, and I would find it hard to make the most of the luggage interior without any organizers or packing cubes.

This luggage is spacious, but you should keep in mind that you will need to pack around the barrels of the wheel handle in the bottom compartment. Also, the suitcase is not expandable at all, and that can be a problem for people who haven’t yet mastered the art of packing light.

TSA-Friendly Lock

This carry-on suitcase features a zippered closure with a TSA-approved lock on the side. It’s a three-digit combination lock, and you can set up the combination to be anything you want. It’s usually super simple to do this, and you just need to press a button or two and then choose your combination.

It’s great that the luggage includes a TSA-friendly lock because this means that TSA agents can open up your suitcase without damaging it. This is especially convenient for travel to the United States, where TSA agents have the right to choose a random piece of luggage for inspection.

If the lock on your suitcase is not TSA-friendly, the agents have the right to force open the suitcase even if that might damage it beyond repair. The TSA lock is present on both the carry-on and checked sizes of the Osaki Tokyo luggage.

Value for Money

The Osaki Tokyo suitcases are good value for money. They’re not too expensive – the retail price of the carry-on is around $99, which is affordable for a polypropylene suitcase. Keep in mind that this material is often used by mid-range and high-end luggage brands, and their suitcases are generally much more expensive.

Samsonite has a few polypropylene options that are almost double the price of this suitcase. Also, the Osaki Tokyo luggage manages to be lighter than Samsonite’s luggage, so I genuinely think it’s good value for money. Even the 31” large suitcase is surprisingly affordable with a retail price of around $120, compared to Samsonite’s $280 for a suitcase made from the same material.

Overall, if you’re looking to buy lightweight luggage and you’re on a tight budget, these suitcases are definitely an option you should be considering.

Osaki Tokyo is not a very famous luggage brand. In fact, there’s zero information online about the company itself, so I can’t really tell you too much about the manufacturer of this luggage.

What I can tell you is that the suitcases appear to be sold only in the UK. The Osaki Tokyo luggage is sold by K2 Global, one of the UK’s largest luggage stores.

The TK Maxx website has a few other options from this brand, including soft-shell luggage. All Osaki Tokyo suitcases are very affordable, so they’re an option to consider for travelers on a tiger budget.

Osaki Tokyo Luggage Review: Is It Worth Buying?

If you are on a tight budget and your main priority is to buy lightweight luggage, Osaki Tokyo suitcases are absolutely worth buying. The polypropylene construction might not be extremely durable, but it is very lightweight, which makes it easier to pack and remain under the weight limits for checked and carry-on luggage.

The suitcases are also very affordable, and about half the price of similar options from other mid-range and high-end brands. And you’re not sacrificing a lot when it comes to features – the main thing you’re not getting on this luggage is expandable capacity, and that can absolutely be a good thing.

The Osaki Tokyo luggage features spinner wheels, an adjustable wheel handle, and a TSA-friendly lock, so it’s got all the features you would expect from a much more expensive suitcase.
