Batanes Winter Marathon brings together outdoor enthusiasts to the northernmost region of the Philippines in one of the most popular and enduring runs.
Batanes is the smallest province in the country and is located in the northern part. What most participants do not realize, and interestingly a number of locals are in this category, is that Batanes actually has a winter season. Batanes experiences winter in the months of November through to February.
For those who take on the marathon, it is more than just running. It is the picturesque setting of the rolling hills, the lush green covering, and overall the natural setting of the place. This, coupled with the buzz of enthusiastic marathoners makes for an exciting weekend activity.
Those interested in participating need to be aware that there are three key categories of the race: the 10 km run, 21 km run, and 42 km run. Individuals get to choose the race they are most comfortable in, with the 42 km remaining largely a preserve of pro-runners. Usually, the Batanes Winter Marathon starts off at 5:30 am, which works well for most participants as it means one can run well before it becomes too warm.
Eligibility to participate in this marathon requires pre-registration and payment ahead of the Batanes Winter Marathon. Failure to do this will result in the cancellation of your slot. Look out for the next race to be held on February 21, 2019 (TBA). Go ahead and enjoy the stunning scenery along the route in the beautiful Batanes hills.
