The best thing about this bag is that it’s warm, soft, and cozy while being light and compact. The sleeping bag weighs just 2.5lbs and packs down to 12×6 inches, not bad going.

The outer shell is made from durable nylon while the inside is filled with a lot of duck down with a decent fill power to ensure you stay warm. This one is rated to 15F but some users have reported that at 15F it’s very cold, so perhaps it’s better to consider this a 3 season bag.

TETON Sports LEEF Mummy Sleeping Bag

TETON Sports LEEF Lightweight Adult Mummy Sleeping Bag; Great for Hiking, Backpacking and Camping; Free Compression Sack; Black , Adult - 87' x 34' x 22'

The TETON Sports LEEF Mummy Sleeping Bag is another great value sleeping bag that’s light, portable, and ideal for backpacking.

The sleeping bag weighs just 2.9lbs and comes with a handy stuff sack to get it into a compact size. It doesn’t get down small enough to fit horizontally in most backpacks though and you’ll most likely have to store it vertically.

It has a 3-4 season rating but it’s better for 3 seasons. Some customers have been warm at 35F while others have had to layer up. So the fill power is decent, but not mind-blowing. There is added insulation in the foot box to keep your feet warm and the hood pulls nicely around your face to ensure your head stays warm. Also, keep in mind, mummy bags are often better at keeping you warm as they better fit the body’s overall shape. They can also help to give a better warmth to weight ratio.

The outer shell is water-resistant and durable while the inner lining is soft to keep you comfy. There is an interior pocket for valuables or a torch and the zippers are anti-snag to make sure it opens and closes easily.

Unfortunately, it also absorbs odors and it’s not that easy to get back into the stuff sack. Overall it’s a pretty amazing sleeping bag for the price amongst more expensive mummy bags.

Pros

  • Warm
  • Water-resistant
  • Light
  • Good price
  • Good customer service
  • Ltd lifetime warranty

Coleman North Rim Sleeping Bag

Coleman 0°F Mummy Sleeping Bag for Big and Tall Adults | for North Rim Cold-Weather, Olive

When it comes to sleeping bags, Coleman are pretty well known and they make quality sleeping bags for a very affordable price.

Their North Rim Sleeping Bag is made to handle temperatures with a lower limit of around 0F (temperature rating), which means a good warmth-to-weight ratio. Some users have found that it’s comfortable at 20F and others have complained they’re cold at 10F, so it’s a bit hit and miss. It’s advisable to think of it as a 3 season bag and not a 4 season.

The outer cover is made from ripstop polyester for durability and water resistance. It’s stuffed in a quilting construction to keep you warm. It comes with Thermolock draft tubes, an extra insulated foot box, and a drawstring hood to ensure no warmth escapes.

You can also unzip the bottom on hot nights to keep you cool and get those feet out of the extra warm foot box.

It’s been made for people up to 6ft 2inches but it is a bit of a tight fit. If you’re on the larger side it might be tricky to get in and roll around in the night. It’s also tricky to stuff it back in the sleeping bag but after a few tries, you’ll get the hang of it.

Overall a great value option that does that job, just don’t be sleeping at 0F in it.

Pros

  • Machine washable
  • Warm
  • Light
  • Water-resistant
  • Great value

Cons

  • Better for 3 season camping
  • Tight fit
  • Tricky to get into the cover

What To Look For In A Backpacking Sleeping Bag

Temperature Rating

Choosing the right temperature rating is the first step to buying a bag. Unfortunately, everyone is different when it comes to how we sleep. Men seem to sleep warm and women about 10 degrees colder. Some people sleep cold, others hot, some need their feet out, some in. Add all this to lots of other warmth factors and it makes it exceedingly hard to get the right rating for you.

In this review, the sleeping bags range from 2 seasons (summer) to 4 seasons (winter) sleeping bags with the majority being 3 season sleeping bags. It also depends a little on your sleeping pad (aka Thermarest). A high r-rating sleeping pad can insulate your body in a sleeping bag far better and make it seem warmer. So, it is worthwhile considering both – sleeping bag and a sleeping pad when thinking about warmth.

If you’re unsure which rating to go with, 3 seasons is a safe bet, unless you plan on camping in the snow. But always be sure to check the temperature rating.

Down Or Synthetic?

There are two main types of insulation fill used in the sleeping bags and these are down or synthetic.

Synthetic sleeping bags tend to be more affordable and are better at staying warm if they get wet. They’re also a bit bulkier and heavier than down bags.

Down is more expensive, warmer and lighter, and compresses down easily. Down sleeping bags also tend to last longer than synthetics when looked after properly. Down sleeping bags are generally better than synthetic ones.

Price

The overall price you pay is usually based on warmth and weight. The more affordable sleeping bags in the review are designed for summer use and the more expensive for winter. We have kept the prices in the review quite reasonable and haven’t included the super sleeping bags that cost $500 or more.

Weight

Your sleeping bag might be the heaviest item in your backpack, after your tent. The sleeping bags in the review range from 1.7lbs to 3.5lbs and this is due to their rating. It’s important to find the balance between warmth and weight, but you should always choose warmth as a priority and a good warmth-to-weight ratio if possible.

The other option is to own a very light summer sleeping bag and a heavier but still light winter one, then you’re ready for any occasion.
