Best eSim Providers in Canary Islands

Best eSim For Low Data Use

Airalo Spain eSim

Airalo has some very affordable eSIMs for the Canary Islands. They are my go-to eSIM provider in most cases, unless there is someone cheaper.

The cheapest Canary Islands eSIM plan from Airalo provides 1 GB of data for 7 days and costs only $4.5. It’s a great deal if you just need a Gigabyte to get started when you land in Tenerife.

The full list of plans from Airalo is:

Although Airalo is very reliable and provides great speed and connectivity in my experience, you don’t get a phone number or texts. So, you will have to use Whatsapp or Facetime to communicate with those at home.

Pros

  • 6 different GB sizes
  • One of the cheapest
  • App service is great

Cons

  • No calls or texts

Unlimited Data

Holafly

Holafly is the best eSim provider for unlimited data in the Canary Islands. They only provide unlimited data for various timeframes, all you need to do is choose how long you are in Tenerife or another of the Canary Islands – 1 – 90 days.

If you use a lot of data on things like Youtube, Netflix or even Instagram, Holafly is the perfect solution for your beach vacation!

Here are some of the options:

Holafly is also a great deal for anyone working on the islands, like digital nomads, or entrepreneurs who travel a lot. This is especially true if you want to work outside or away from your hotel.

** The only warning I would give is you cannot share a lot of data off your phone (limited to 500 MB per day), so you will need a tablet or laptop with an eSIM to really make this work.

Holafly has also recently added a phone number to many of their European plans, so you can make 60 minutes of calls while using your plan too.

Well, it’s almost the better option – Holafly’s eSim doesn’t allow for data tethering or hotspot, which means you can’t share your mobile data. You will have internet access only on one device, which is truly disappointing.

Pros

  • Unlimited Data packages
  • Europe packages also available
  • 60 minutes of calls includes

Cons

  • No tethering/hotspot.

Affordable eSIMs

Nomad

If you want affordable data while traveling in the Canary Islands, Nomad’s eSIMs are usually a good choice.

They have 4 different data plans

It is just worth mentioning that per GB, Airalo is still cheaper.

And Nomad often has a confusing mix of plans with different providers making it harder to choose and know what you are getting.

Another option is to use their Europe eSIM, especially if you plan to travel outside of Spain. It includes 25 countries in Europe, so you should be good to go no matter where you go in Western Europe.

Pros

  • Affordable prices per GB
  • Options including Europe Regional

Cons

  • Not the best operater (Vodaphone)

Cheapest Canary Island eSIMs

Ubigi

Ubigi is a big eSIM provider that also operates in the Canary Islands and Spain.

They have three data plans for Spain/Canaries, as well as a wide variety of regional and multi-country data plans for travelers who never stay in one place for too long.

And, if you calculate the price per GB they are very competitive especially for bigger plans (under $1 per GB for the biggest).

The Canary Islands prepaid eSIMS are

What is great about Ubigi’s data plans is that they’re all valid for 30 days, even the 3 GB one. They also have lots of regional plans to help those who travel outside of just one country.

Their regional options are of course more expensive, but worth it if you’re going traveling a lot.

And like most of their competitors, they don’t offer texts or calls, but they do use reliable operators (Yoigo, Orange Spain) – one of which has 5G! And  they allow tethering/hotspot.

Pros

  • 30 days for each package
  • Regional and country packages
  • Hotspots allowed

Cons

  • No calls or texts

Best eSim For Data, Text & Calls

Orange Holiday Zen eSim

The Orange Holiday Zen eSim is the cheaper of the two data plans offered by the Spanish mobile operator. Orange Zen Holiday includes:

  • 8 GB of data
  • unlimited calls and texts (French phone number)
  • 30 minutes/200 calls to the rest of the world

This eSIM plan is valid for 2 weeks, but you can keep topping up or reusing the eSIM profile for up to 6 months.

The price per GB of this plan is not that appealing at $3.8/GB but if you need a number for calling or texting, it is one of the few options around.

Pros

  • Calls & texts included
  • Multiple countries

Cons

  • Not the cheapest option

Benefits of Getting an eSim in Spain

While traveling to the beautiful Canary Islands, you’re going to love the ease of staying connected through an eSIM. Think about all those times you’ll want to share the stunning island vistas with your friends via FaceTime, or quickly pull up Google Maps to find the best local seafood spot. That’s when you’ll truly appreciate the convenience of an eSIM

Sure, you can try hopping onto public WiFi provided by cafes and local spots, but let’s be honest, those connections can sometimes be a bit like riding a roller coaster – unsteady and slow, especially when your favorite cafe is full of people.

And who loves the high costs of data roaming? Maybe your home provider is nice, but mine stings me the moment I leave home. So, knowing exactly what an eSIM costs is a huge sigh of relief.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSims in Canary Islands

Orange Holiday Zen eSim

Orange Spain does have prepaid eSIM data plans, but the rest are yet to jump on board. And, they won’t issue you an eSIM until you’ve provided them with your ID or passport number. So, it’s just as bad as going for a SIM card in my opinion, and often not cheaper!

If you don’t provide any ID, the operator will suspend your card.

How Much Data Do You Need In The Canary Islands?

That’s a very personal question.

  • Some people barely use 1 GB (maps and email)
  • Others can burn through 5 GB before breakfast (Youtube, Netflix, Insta)

It always depends on your internet habits. And also if you have wifi in your hotel or Airbnb.

Unlimited data plans are always the best option if you want constant mobile data while in the Canary Islands. But obviously, it is not the cheapest option. I just love not having to worry about data while I am traveling, especially if I have to work.

Devices Compatible with an eSim

Sim Card

Most modern phones, tablets and smartwatches have eSIMs these days. But if you are not sure, you can check out our lists of compatible devices:

Or, you can check whether your phone can use an eSim by dialing *#06#.

Several identification numbers for your device will pop up like the –  EID number. This means your phone is compatible with embedded sim cards. No EID number means no eSIM.
