Join me as we do deep into the Mammut Spindrift 32L Backpack Review so you can discover all the details and if this is the skiing backpack you have been waiting for.
The Mammut Spindrift 32 is built to handle life on the slopes and this is highly apparent when you see what material it is made of.
This ski backpack is made from 420D Nylon Tritan Ripstop and if you know your deniers and materials, you’ll know this is an awesome material.
Nylon Tritan ripstop is an incredibly durable material that can handle any kind of abrasion you can throw at it, and it’s a good thing too.
You will be able to put this backpack down on sharp rocks, carry your skis, snowboard, and ice axe without worrying about them wearing through your backpack, and lots more too.
When you consider this material has a denier rating of 420D which is ample thickness, it can handle anything the Alpine environment can bring its way.
This backpack also comes with a limited lifetime warranty to boot which is a testament to how well made this backpack is.
The stitching is of excellent quality too so the materials stay put without a single thread coming undone.
The Mammut Spindrift 32 comes with durable weatherproof external zippers that ensure no rain or moisture is going to get inside your backpack.
The zippers are long-lasting, reliable, and open smoothly pretty much every time.
The Mammut Spindrift 32 isn’t labeled as waterproof or water-resistance but 420D Nylon Tritan Ripstop is naturally quite water-resistant as a material.
This means that you don’t need to worry about the odd light rain shower while using this backpack. But, if it gets too wet, water will start coming through the material but not the zippers.
Luckily, the backpack does come with a rain cover for when you experience a serious downpour or heavy snowfall.
When it comes to finding an alpine backpack for spending time skiing, snowboarding, and climbing, carrying comfort is one of the most important considerations.
The Mammut Spindrift 32 is designed to provide maximum comfort while you’re hauling your gear to the top of a slope, and here is how.
The back panel on the Mammut Spindrift is contoured to fit your torso in the most comfortable way possible.
It is made from breathable foam that not only supports your back comfortably but also ensures your back doesn’t overheat while you’re hiking up the mountain.
This backpack also comes with an aluminum frame which ensures the load of the backpack, especially when full, is spread out evenly.
The frame system, therefore, ensures that no matter how heavy the pack is, you will be comfortable carrying it around.
The shoulder straps on the Mammut Spindrift 32 are contoured, padded, and breathable to ensure the ultimate carrying comfort.
With these shoulder straps, you won’t experience any digging into your shoulders, you won’t overheat, and you’ll be comfortable climbing up those steep ascents loaded up with alpine gear.
You will also find an adjustable sternum strap on the shoulder straps which is a key element in ensuring not too much load rests on your shoulders alone.
The waist belt on this backpack is made from the same breathable and padded materials as the shoulder straps and back panel.
The waist belt is wide, adjustable, and provides excellent carrying support plus by being padded and breathable, you will stay cool and be able to carry heavy loads with ease.
This backpack also features side compression straps which allow you to pull all your gear into a better center of gravity.
This makes carrying a heavy load up a mountain a lot easier and it links into the frame, shoulder, waist, and sternum straps perfectly.
Overall, the Mammut Spindrift 32 offers incredible carrying comfort even when you’re wearing it fully loaded with alpine gear while on a serious ascent.
Organization and accessibility are where the Mammut Spindrift 32 really shines and it is what sets it apart from other alpine backpacks designed for skiing, snowboarding, and ice climbing.
Sitting behind the front panel of this backpack is a dedicated avalanche gear pocket. You will need to open the main zipper and then the red-tagged zipper to the avalanche pocket to access it.
You will find more than enough space for a shovel and you will find specially designed slots for your probe, shovel handle, and saw so that everything is perfectly organized in an emergency situation.
The one downside to the avalanche gear pocket is that it isn’t instantly accessible in an emergency situation when every second counts.
It would ideally be accessed from the outside of the backpack so that you can get to it as fast as possible.
The main compartment on this backpack offers quite a lot of packing space, even when your avalanche pocket is full.
It’s also extremely accessible since it comes with a full zipper which makes packing about as easy as it gets but it’s not that suited for snow. You can just open it the right amount in the snow though.
Inside the main compartment, you’ll find a few different slots which are designed for a hydration system, your phone, and more. But, you can use them to organize whatever you want, like an energy blanket for example.
This backpack also features a few more compartments and pockets which makes keeping your gear safe and organized super easy.
At the back of the pack, you will find a weatherproof external zipper compartment that is big enough for some ski goggles but it is most useful for keeping any valuables in that can’t get wet like a phone or GPS for example.
You will also find a pocket on the top of the pack that is felt-lined and ideal for carrying sunglasses in as they won’t get scratched but it is actually designed to hold your radio.
There is also a small pocket on the hip belt for keeping snacks in and there is a bottle sleeve on the shoulder straps that will hold a good size bike water holder.
This backpack comes with multiple attachment points for your alpine gear. You can carry your skis diagonally or use the A-ski carrier.
Both the ski carriers are fully adjustable and hold down the skis very well so they don’t slip and slide while you’re hiking. You can also use them to carry a snowboard too.
You will also find an integrated helmet holder with volume extension (+2L) on the back of the pack and it holds a large helmet and ensures no snow gets in there too.
You can also attach walking sticks and an ice axe to the backpack and it even works with a compatible crampon pocket attachment.
Overall, the Mammut Spindrift 32 has a place for pretty much every piece of alpine gear you could think of. The best thing about it is that you can access most of the gear attachment points without having to take the backpack off.
The Mammut Spindrift 32 is the perfect-sized backpack for day trips up the mountain and as carry-on luggage on a plane too.
The main compartment offers more than enough room for extra layers, food, and water while the attachment points ensure all your gear has a place to go too.
You can also use this backpack to go on hiking weekends, city breaks, and any other 2-3 day trips as 32 liters are more than enough to hold everything you need.
When you first clock the price of the Mammut Spindrift 32, you might not think that it offers very good value as it is a bit expensive. But, I would beg to differ.
If you think about the design of this backpack and the thought that has gone into it as well as the amazing features and durable materials used, you start seeing the value it delivers at its price point.
Also, the fact that this backpack comes with a limited lifetime warranty is pretty impressive. If anything goes wrong with this backpack due to material or manufacturing issues, it will be fixed or replaced for you.
The Mammut Spindrift 32 has scored excellently in our rating system with a score of 88/100. This is a high score on our ratings and not many products hit over 80/100.
The category it dropped the most points on was value for money as it is priced out of a lot of people’s budgets but it did hit the nail on the head across all the other categories.
Overall the Mammut Spindrift 32 is certainly a backpack you should buy if you spend a lot of time skiing, snowboarding, and climbing in icy alpine environments.
I love the design of this backpack as it makes ascending up a mountain with all the safety gear and ski equipment you need about as easy and comfortable as possible.
Add to this the ease of access, functionality, and durability and you have an alpine backpack that will be with you for years.
