If you have been looking for a tent that feels more like a home, the Nemo Wagontop might just be it! View Latest DealLooking for a new tent to spend nights camped out in this summer? The Nemo Wagontop 4p might just be the tent you have been looking for.
The Nemo Wagontop 4P has been designed to be luxurious and spacious while rugged enough to handle some epic trips into the backcountry with friends and family.
In this Nemo Wagontop 4P Review, we take a deep look at every detail of this tent from its materials to livability, value for money, weather resistance, and more so you can be sure this is the new tent for you.
One of the first things you should consider when buying any tent, and especially the Nemo Wagontop 4P which doesn’t come cheap, is the materials it is made out of and how long it might last.
The Nemo Wagontop 4P is made up of two different grades of material depending on what section you’re talking about.
The floor of this tent is made out of 300D polyether urethane-coated polyester which is quite impressive.
If you know your denier ratings then you will know that 300 denier polyester is tough and can handle anything the ground might through at it.
The sidewalls and roof of the tent are made from a much thinner 75D polyether urethane-coated polyester which keeps the tent light.
The seams are well stitched and sealed to ensure the tent stays together and the poles included are 14.5mm thick aluminum.
With the aforementioned materials, it is quite obvious how durable the floor of the tent is. 300D material is super thick and most tents use smaller deniers in their tents.
With this floor, no sharp stones will get through and you can rest assured that it is going to last for many camping trips.
The sidewalls, however, are not as durable being made from 75D PeU polyester so you should careful when pitching this tent as a stray branch could rip the outer walls.
The Nemo Wagontop 4P has been designed for 3-season use, but how well will it really stand up to the elements once you’re out in the wilderness?
This tent comes with a 1500mm hydrostatic rating for both the floor, walls, and roof. This is a pretty solid rating that will keep you dry during a heavy downpour but there are some design flaws that make this a bit redundant with this tent.
A great thing about this tent is the huge panoramic windows as they give sweeping views but they also let water in.
Luckily, they close from the inside so you don’t have to go out to close them but the style allows rain to seep through the closures and drip on you while you are sleeping.
Some of the windows are 7 feet high up too, so it can be hard for shorter people to close the top window when it rains.
The fabric this tent is made out of handles the wind well and does a good job of blocking it. But, the shape of the tent is where the wind starts to take over.
The huge dimensions of the tent combined with a square shape and a 7-foot high roof make this a tent that gets blown away with a large gust.
If you are camping out in a storm you better have some extra guy lines handy and more to keep this tent performing in the wind.
Thanks to the large windows, the ventilation inside this tent is excellent but you will need the wind and rain to back off for you to enjoy it.
This makes it great for summer camping as you won’t overheat in this tent. You will find multiple vents and the multiple mesh windows mean you can be cool even on hot nights.
Let’s face it, if a tent is convenient to use, chances are you are not going to want to use it and it will get left at home.
The Nemo Wagontop 4P isn’t the most convenient tent around in all honesty, but with some practice, it will become manageable.
With a minimum trail weight of 16 lbs. 2 oz this tent isn’t the heaviest or the lightest and considering it is made for 4 people, each person would have to carry 4lbs of the tent each and that is at full capacity.
While adding 4 lbs to your pack isn’t the end of the world, it is as heavy as a performance two-person tent. Also, you should consider if you will even have 4 people in your tent as usually, it is 2 or 3, adding even more weight to your pack.
Of course, if you are car camping then there really shouldn’t be any issues as a 16lb tent is very liftable for everyone from teenagers to mums and grandparents too.
When packed up in the included tent bag this tent’s packed dimensions are 10 x 27 inches.
This is actually quite compact for a tent with so much living space and you will easily be able to slot it in your car, at home in the cupboard, and strap it to your pack too.
Setting this tent up for the first time is a complete nightmare as it uses a tent pole configuration no one is used to and there is no color coding as to where they should go either.
You should expect to take about 20-30 minutes working out how to pitch this tent on your first go. The poles connect easily but once connected, working out their orientation is pain plus they are super heavy.
Once you have worked it out, you will then need to clip the tent around the poles, which sounds easy until you remember about the 7ft high sections which are a task to reach.
You will want to remember how to set this tent up and maybe get some colored electric tape to create your own color-coding system. Once you master pitching it, it should take you around 10 minutes instead of 20.
The one thing that can make up for flaws in convenience is how delightful a tent is to be inside and that is what the Nemo Wagontop 4P is all about.
Designed for spacious luxury, this tent maintains a 78-inch roof across the entire ceiling which means about 6 ft 5 inches and under can stand-up straight with ease. This is something not many tents offer.
When you combine the high ceiling with the near-vertical walls that measure 63 inches you get a cube of space with a ton of volume. The straight walls ensure you can use every tiny bit of floor space.
This tent is rated for 4 people and without angled walls offers 17.25 square feet of space per person and whoever gets the edges won’t be sleeping with an inner wall bouncing on their nose.
There isn’t a hanging point for a lantern in the center of this tent but there are tabs where you can rig up a system for both a lantern and laundry too.
You will also find four small pockets inside, two under the door near the floor and two at the back of the tent. You could also add a big gear loft to the ceiling but you would lose the standing space.
We have already mentioned the windows that come with this tent. They are big and offer great views of the surroundings and the ventilation is great too.
Outside the tent is a removable vestibule with can double up as a giant mudroom, and storage area, and there is even enough space to have a few deck chairs in there too.
The door is a double door with 4 zippers that works like french doors, just on a tent. You can open it on the left, the right, or both for a big view out the front of the tent.
The Nemo Wagontop 4P is by no means the cheapest 4-person tent out there… but is it worth the extra dollars?
For sure, if you are looking for a luxury tent for family and friends that you can take into the wilderness.
Durable materials are never cheap, and the Nemo Wagontop uses more of them than most to build such a spacious family home for the mountains.
Plus, it is perfect for camping in light weather conditions, but you will have to master how to pitch it as it isn’t easy the first time.
With a rating of 82, the Nemo Wagontop 4P has performed extremely well against our rating system.
It lost a few marks for weather resistance and convenience considering how much of a pain it can be to pitch and that a heavy bout of wind and rain will cause some issues.
But when it comes to luxury camping with a ton of space and in maximum comfort, this tent is hard to beat and its marks for livability are off the charts.
Would we recommend Nemo Wagontop 4P overall? Absolutely!
If you’re looking for a 3-season family tent that’s light, super spacious, and built for the family, this one is it.
Granted, there are some easier tents to pitch with some better weather resistance, but we think the overall package in terms of livability, comfort, and durability makes it a good choice for fair-weather family campers.
