Vufine Plus For Mavic Pro – The Perfect FPV For Your Drone?

The DJI Goggles are an awesome piece of tech, and a great way to experience a First Person View (FPV) with your Mavic Pro or other DJI drone.

But, they are not the perfect FPV solution for everyone. They are big, heavy, expensive, and stop the drone pilot from seeing what is happening outside the goggles (so technically, you need a spotter to be FAA compliant).

That is where the new Vufine+ wearable display comes in. It’s like the portable and detachable version of Google Glass, but perfect for drones!

Time to check out if this is something you might want to invest in!

What Does The VuFine+ Do?

The simplest way to explain how the Vufine works are like this:

  • VuFine connects to any 720p HDMI output and displays it as a 4-inch screen in front of your eye at a “virtual” distance of 12 inches.
  • So, in the eye that is seeing the Vufine, you get to see exactly what your drone is streaming from the camera.
  • The huge advantage of this wearable is that your vision is not 100% blocked by goggles. So, you can still see the drone and be in full control (and FAA compliant).

You can check out this video below where the guy is flying his DJI Phantom with the VuFine and showing what he can see on the screen.

It is an exact copy/output of what is seen on the DJI Go App, just right in front of your eye.

Technical Specs Of The VuFine Plus

Ok, so you like the sound of the Vufine but maybe you are wondering how exactly it works?

The Connection

The Vufine+ connects to any device capable of outputting HDMI (phone, tablet, camera, gaming device, etc). It comes with both an HDMI and USB cable to help you connect to it.

If you have an iPhone or a device with a mini-USB or other output for the HDMI you will need an adapter. VuFine is well aware of this and can help you out with that on their website.

Attachment and Adjustment to Glasses

The Vufine+ is designed to be worn on glasses, but if you don’t wear any you get a pair of plain glasses with it.

Either way, it attaches to a clip on the side via an easy-to-attach/remove magnetic system.

The device also has a very flexible adjustment system which can:

  • slide back and forth
  • tilt up and down (39 degrees)
  • tilt left and right (30 degrees)
  • move sideways to adjust to the eye

Alternative Vufine Mounts

The team at Vufine is also aware that not everyone wants to wear glasses (or can in all situations).

So, they also have mounts for :

As you can see in the shot here, it is pretty simple to attach and works more or less the same as glasses. The only downside is you need one for each hat you will wear, I guess?

Other Features & Specs

The Vufine+ is actually a pretty simple piece of gear so there is not that much more to explain here. But, for those that are interested, here are the rest of the specs:

  • Size: 96 x 20 x 14mm (3.8″W x 0.8″H x 0.6″D)
  • Weight: 26g (0.9oz)
  • Battery Life: Approx 90 minutes
  • Charging: 5v micro USB
  • Screen: LCOS qHD 960×540, Brightness: 220 cd/m2, Contrast: 150:1, Refresh: 60Hz
  • Eye: Standard is right-hand side/eye, but Left eye is available (but cables come out of top instead)

Final Verdict

The Vufine+ is a cool way to go semi-FPV (First Person View) with your drone. It allows you to see exactly what the camera is seeing while still being in control of the drone too. That is something you can’t do with goggles.

They are also less than half the price, something to seriously consider if you are not sure you need a full set of FPV goggles yet. They are also a lot less bulky and do not weigh a tonne.

Important: because the Vufine connects to an HDMI out it will only work with phones or tablets that have this. At this stage, we are talking about Android devices and other options that have this port. Apple has made our lives a bit more difficult with only one lightning port!

But, in the end, it really depends on what you want them for. If you want full immersive FPV drone racing or filming, then these might not cut it, as they have way less resolution. But as a cheap starting point for seeing what your drone sees, they are awesome (and you can use them for lots of other applications too!).

PROS

  • Simple, cheap, and lightweight FPV for drones
  • Allows the drone pilot to still operate and see the drone outside the FPV
  • Fully adjustable – lots of options to fit your eyes and with or without glasses
  • Reasonable battery life (90 mins)

CONS

    Not fully immersive

  • Lower resolution than a set of DJI goggles
  • Only one eye is used
  • Not wireless like the DJI goggles (only with the Mavic Pro)
