Best Bushcraft Backpack

ALPS OutdoorZ Commander

The first bushcraft backpack to make it onto our hit list is the ALPS OutdoorZ Commander. This pack has been designed with hunting in mind, and it features a drop-down rifle holder as well as a framework and lashing system that enables you to carry around large carcasses.

The metal frame maintains the structure of the bag itself and connects to the freighter shelf where you can strap your haul. Unfortunately, the frame is prone to creaking slightly, but if it drives you nuts (or it’s simply not needed) you can detach the frame entirely.

It also has an impressive 86L capacity plus two side-hinged pockets, and a main, front, and spotting scope (or monocular) pocket so you can keep your gear nice and organized. With such a high capacity, we’re glad to see that this bag features waist and chest straps, although they can slide around a bit so make sure you secure them nice and tightly. We also like that the torso can be adjusted up to 6 inches so that you can find the perfect fit, which is very important when you’ll be carrying heavy loads.

It’s not the cheapest bushcraft backpack around, but it’s not too expensive either, and thanks to the rip-stop nylon it will last you a while. If game hunting is your thing, you’re going to love this bag.

Pros

  • Detachable frame provides added support
  • Hands-free rifle carrier
  • Chest and waist straps
  • Freighter shelf for meat
  • Multiple pockets

Cons

  • Frame is prone to squeaking
  • Chest and waist straps can slide

Product Information

  • Dimensions: 40 x 17 x 6 inches
  • Total Weight: 7 lbs. 5 oz
  • Bag Weight: 2 lbs. 3 oz
  • Capacity: 86L
  • Torso Length: Adjustable 17-23 inches

Best For Hunting

Eberlestock Gunslinger II

Eberlestock G2M Gunslinger II Military Pack, Military Green

The Eberlestock Gunslinger II is a high-end bushcraft backpack designed for serious hunters who love to stay organized in the wilderness.

Like the ALPS OutdoorZ Commander, it has a compartment for weapons and a removable frame. The full-width adjustable scabbard can accommodate almost any weapon type, and the frame is close-fitting yet super durable and lightweight thanks to the aluminum construction. It can be removed and even swapped with other Eberlestock frames, making it a very versatile pack.

This bushcraft backpack also features several organizational sections in the top compartment, so you can be sure to find what you need when you need it. The external molle is great for clipping on extra bits of gear, and on the inside, there are pockets for your gadgets as well as hydration compartments.

There are also compression straps to help you beat the bulk while you’re in the field. At this price, we’d like to see an integrated rain cover, but at least the 500D ripstop nylon of the bag is water-resistant. The average capacity of the bag means it isn’t suitable for multi-day trips, but it’s certainly enough for an overnighter or a long day that will keep your gear in order.

Pros

  • Accommodates almost all weapons
  • Removable and swappable frame
  • Lots of organizational features
  • Water-resistant fabric
  • Durable

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Lacks an integrated rain cover
  • Not suitable for multi-day trips

Product Information

  • Pack volume: 34L
  • Scabbard volume: 10L
  • Total volume: 44L
  • Weight: 6.8 lbs
  • Dimensions (main bag): 22 x 10 x 8 inches
  • Dimensions (scabbard): 34 x 10 x 3 inches, with a 26-inch circumference opening. GSTC cover allows enclosed carriage of weapons up to 60 inches

Best For Daytrips

Gootium Canvas Backpack

Gootium 21101AMG Specially High Density Thick Canvas Backpack Rucksack, Army Green, Large

The Gootium Canvas Backpack is a great choice for day-trips into the wild but, thanks to its casual appearance and small size, also doubles up as a super durable bag that you can use for weekends away or inner-city missions.

The 100% cotton fabric gives the bushcraft backpack a stylish appearance and comfortable and easy to clean, but the fastenings are made of metal and there’s a leather trim for durability. One drawback is that the cotton won’t stand up to water well, so make sure you pack a rain cover. The shoulder straps are padded and adjustable to provide maximum comfort.

As well as a spacious main compartment, there’s an interior zippered pocket, a front stash pocket, and two side pockets. Plus, we like that you can choose from either a 30L or 23L capacity depending on your needs and there are multiple color options. This a great choice if you’re planning on driving to an outdoor spot and want a rugged daypack for all your supplies.

Pros

  • Stylish appearance
  • Durable fasteners
  • Can be used for multiple purposes
  • Two sizes available
  • Several color options

Cons

  • Not water resistant
  • Not large enough for long trips

Product Information

  • Material: 100% Cotton
  • Dimensions: 3.5 x 8 x 17.7 inches (large); 12 x 8 x 15 inches (small)
  • Weight: 2.1lbs (large); 1.85 lbs (small)

MOUNTAINTOP Hiking Backpack

MOUNTAINTOP 40L Hiking Backpacks with Rain Cover for Women Men

The MOUNTAINTOP Hiking Backpack is a great mid-sized pack that fits a decent amount of gear without becoming overly bulky.

It comes with an adjustable hip belt and sternum strap to help spread the weight of your load evenly and ensure a comfortable fit, plus the back panel and shoulder straps are padded for comfort and well ventilated to reduce back sweatiness.

This bushcraft backpack also has a 17-inch laptop compartment, which is super handy if you want to check your photos or drone footage while you’re in the field. There’s also a compartment that’s suitable for water bladders and a holding place for a tube, so you can keep hydrated on the move.

Multiple adjustable loops mean that you can easily strap roll mats, hiking poles, and even sleeping bags to this pack, and there are a front zippered pocket and side water bottles holders too, although a few more inner pockets would nice and the bottle holders are a little short. Well constructed, with YKK zippers and buckles, this is one double bag that will keep you well organized and won’t let you down. Oh – and it’s available in heaps of colors too!

Pros

  • Adjustable hip belts and sternum straps
  • Multiple adjustable loops for extra gear
  • YKK zippers and buckles
  • Hydration compatible
  • Laptop sleeve
  • Multiple color options

Cons

  • Could have more inner compartments
  • Water bottle holders are a bit short

  • Weight: 2.05 lbs
  • Capacity: 40L

Best For Camping

TETON Sports Scout 3400

TETON Sports Scout 3400 Internal Frame Backpack; High-Performance Backpack for Backpacking, Hiking, Camping; Hunter Green (121)

The TETON Sports Scout 3400 is one of the highest capacity bags for short trips you can find, without moving into the realm of full-on backpacking bags. With a 55L capacity, you can fit everything you need for short overnight stays in this bushcraft backpack.

We love that the torso length and waist belt are adjustable, so you can ensure a great fit. Plus, the foam lumbar padding provides great lumbar support on top of the padded shoulder straps. Just watch out for the waist belt as it tends to loosen over time – you might want to have it extra tight, to begin with.

With side pockets, top pockets, a hydration compartment, compressions, straps, bungee storage, a sleeping bag compartment, and gear loops, you can arrange your gear in the way that suits you best, ensuring essentials are always close at hand. Just watch out for the zipper on the sleeping bag compartment, as it’s covered with z lip that sometimes snags. This pack also comes with an integrated rainfly, so you don’t need to panic when the bad weather hits.

Overall, this a great bushcraft backpack for extended trips. Not only will it keep you comfy and organized, but it comes with a lifetime warranty too so you don’t have to worry about getting a replacement any time soon.

Pros

  • Adjustable torso length and hip belt
  • Lumbar padding for support
  • Lots of storage and attachment points
  • Integrated rainfly
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Waist belt loosens over time
  • Sleeping bag compartment zipper can be a little tricky

Product Information

  • Dimensions (filled): 30 x 17 x 12 inches
  • Waist Belt: Adjustable 26-60 inches
  • Torso Length: Adjustable 15-19.5 inches
  • Sleeping Bag Compartment Size: 14 x 8 x 8 inches

Helikon Bushcraft Satchel

Helikon-Tex Bushcraft Line, Bushcraft Satchel Adaptive Green Tactical

Okay, so we know that strictly speaking this isn’t a bushcraft backpack… but the Helikon Bushcraft Satchel is such a great option for bushcraft day trips that we just had to include it.

Made entirely of 500D nylon, this bag might look cute but it’s certainly tough too and will resist water and abrasions. The YKK zippers won’t let you down either, and we love that the main compartment has a zipper closure so none of your items will slip out. One thing we did notice, however, is that the zippers are single-stitched, which will shorten their lifespan slightly.

We were very impressed with the number of features this bushcraft backpack has, given its small size. On the interior, there’s one zippered mesh pocket and two drawstring pockets suitable for holding water bottles, while on the exterior there’s a zippered pocket, molle side panels for clipping extra gear, and a knife sheath.

The carrying strap is super sturdy, adjustable, and you can even remove it if it’s not needed. The compression straps mean you can cram this bag full when you’re out in the wild but decompress a little if you’re using this bag for day-to-day activities, making it a very versatile bag.

With a 17L capacity, you’ll need more than this for long trips, but it’s certainly a fantastic, stylish option for day trips in the outdoors as well as in the city.

Pros

  • Durable materials
  • Tonnes of organizational features
  • Adjustable, removable carrying strap
  • Versatile

Cons

  • Single-stiched zippers
  • Not suitable for long trips

NOOLA Military Backpack

NOOLA Tactical Military Backpack Army Assault Pack Molle Bag Detachable Rucksack Black with Patch

The NOOLA Military Backpack was designed to be a durable tactical assault pack. The 600D polyester material is water-resistant, plus the bag has rain diverting flaps to keep water away from weak points. The zippers are also heavy-duty and won’t let you down. Although the strap ends are all ‘fold and sewn’ to stop them from moving around, they do loosen over time, so you might have to pause occasionally to tighten them.

One of the best things about this bushcraft backpack is the fact that there are three removable compartments, so you can choose to have a front section and two side sections or simply remove them to shed some pounds. The front section can even be worn as a tactical fanny pack or shoulder bag if you decide you need instant access to some of your gear. The molle on the side leaves plenty of space to attach extra gear too.

Adjustable shoulder straps and a waist belt mean that you can carry your load comfortably, while the mesh ventilation stops you from overheating. Available in a range of camo styles, or just in classic black, this really is great pack to have with you out in the sticks.

Pros

  • Two removable side compartments
  • Removable front compartment
  • Very durable materials
  • Rain diverting flaps
  • Adjustable sternum, waist & shoulder straps

Cons

  • Buckle straps can come loose

Product Information

  • Dimensions: 13 x 19.7 x 8.7 inches
  • Capacity: 50L/60L built-up backpack
  • Material: 600D Oxford material

AmazonBasics Hiking Backpack

Amazon Basics Internal Frame Hiking Camping Rucksack Backpack with Rainfly - 18 x 8 x 37 Inches, 75 Liters, Green

The AmazonBasics Hiking Backpack is a solid choice for weeklong excursions into the back and beyond. With spacious bottom, main, and top compartments you can keep your sleeping bag, clothes, and quick-access times separated. Plus, the bottom and main compartment both have dual pockets on either side – the lower two can hold water bottles while the higher two are zippered for more precious items.

There are tonnes of multi-directional compression straps to help you beat the bulk, which is important when you’re carrying a 75L load. Plus, 5L of this load is optional – chose whether to extend the 5L collar or not. And if that’s still too much, it’s available with 65L and 55L capacities too (all with a removable 5L).

The internal frame of this bushcraft backpack adds support to your spine, although it doesn’t run down the back itself, and the bag itself is constructed of durable polyester. Not only is this water-resistant, but there’s an integrated rain cover too so you’ll never have to put up with damp gear – although it is a little on the small side so be careful if you have extra gear clipped on.

Adjustable torso, shoulder straps, waist, and sternum straps mean that you can get the perfect fit, and the ventilated padding around the lumbar only adds to the comfort. We’d like to see pockets in the waist belt for easy access, but we guess you can’t have everything.

Overall, this is a great bag for weeklong trips in the outdoors. It’s weather-resistant, has tonnes of pockets, and is super comfy too – what more could you want? …maybe a 1-year warranty? It has that too.

Pros

  • Suitable for weeklong trips
  • Spacious inner compartments
  • Water-resistant with rain protection
  • Very adjustable for a great fit
  • 1-year warranty

Cons

  • Frame doesn't run down the back panel and can lead to shape loss
  • Lack waist belt pockets

Product Information

  • Dimensions: 18.5 x 29 x 8 inches
  • Weight: 5.12 pounds
  • Capacity: 75L (65L and 55L also available)

GEARONIC Canvas Backpack

GEARONIC TM 21L Vintage Canvas Backpack for Men Leather Rucksack Knapsack 15 inch Laptop Tote Satchel School Military Army Shoulder Rucksack Hiking Bag Coffee

The GEARONIC Canvas Backpack is another impressive bag that offers great functionality despite its small size.

With four outer zippered pockets and 6 interior ones, there really is a pocket for everything. The main compartment itself has more than enough room for lunch, a change of clothes, and some extras. One drawback is the lack of external attachment points, but with all those pockets you might not need them anyway.

The drawstring closure on the main compartment gives you a high degree of flexibility – you can even leave items poking out the top if you need to. One minor gripe is that the zippers themselves are slightly on the small side, so they can be fiddly to grab in a rush.

This bushcraft backpack is also super stylish, and it’s probably one of the best-looking bushcraft backpacks out there that can handle life in the outdoors. The durable canvas, brass buttons, and leather straps all look great but are designed for durability – and we love that the corners are reinforced with leather. Just make sure you take a cover for the rain, as the canvas will get wet easily in a downpour.

Overall, this bag features way more pockets than your average high-street backpack and it will last you twice as long too.

Pros

  • Durable and stylish
  • Lots of pockets
  • Corners reinforced with leather
  • Great for day trips

Cons

  • Lacks external attachment points
  • Will get wet easily
  • Small zippers

Product Information

  • Materials: cotton canvas, brass, leather
  • Dimensions: 20.3 x 3 x 12.4 inches
  • Weight: 2.1 lbs

What Makes The Best Bushcraft Backpack

As you’ve seen, there’s a whole range of bags out there that are great for bushcraft. Ultimately, the type of bag you go for will depend on the type of trips you’ll be taking – will you be hunting, will you be camping, and how long will you be out for? We’d recommend asking yourselves these questions, and then thinking about the following factors when you’re shopping around.

Capacity

If you’re planning on weeklong trips, then you’ll need to take all the survival essentials with you and you’re probably going to need a hefty backpack. However, if you just want to explore for a day, you can get away with a small to mid-range bag. Plus, if you know the weather will be good, you can get away with packing light. If you’re going for a couple of nights but don’t want to carry too much, then try a mid-sized bag with attachment points for extra gear.

Purpose

If you’ll be hunting game on your trip, then you need a bag that can accommodate your weapon as well as your haul, and there are some great options out there. If you don’t always hunt, try to find a versatile bag with removable parts so that you can use it for non-hunting trips too. If you’re camping, keep your eyes peeled for sleeping bag compartments and external loops for your mat. If you plan on hiking all day, then we’d certainly recommend getting a pack that’s hydration compatible so you don’t have to heave your bag on and off every time you want a sip.

Comfort and Style

With the larger bags, make sure you prioritize comfort – you’ll have a miserable trip if your 75L backpack isn’t comfortable. Often these larger bags aren’t as stylish, but it’s not like you’ll be wearing it to the mall so it doesn’t really matter. With smaller bags, however, it can be worth spending a bit more on one that you really like the look of. That way, it doubles up as a bag you can use for weekends away or inner-city day trips.

Our Top Three…

You’ve seen a selection of top-notch bushcraft bags now, but in case you still can’t make up your mind, here are our personal favorites based on types of trip:

Our top choice for anyone that likes hunting-based bushcraft has to be the Eberlestock Gunslinger II. It’s durable, water-resistant, and has heaps of organizational touches.

Unusually, the scabbard on this bushcraft backpack can accommodate almost all weapons, so you can switch things up when you feel like it, and it can even be removed for non-hunting trips. The frame is swappable too, so you can pick and chose your final set-up. Granted it’s not the cheapest option, but it’s so versatile it’s like getting multiple bags for the price of one!

Our absolute favorite for single-day bushcraft excursions has to be the Gootium Canvas Backpack.

This bushcraft backpack has been carefully crafted with super-durable fasteners and an overall stylish appearance. Durable enough for day trips in the outdoors, yet attractive enough to wear around town, this bag really is a win-win!

If you’ll be camping out in the wild, our top recommendation is the TETON Sports Scout 3400. Its 55L capacity leaves more than enough room for the essentials, but it won’t become overly bulky either. With a sleeping bag compartment and loops for a roll mat, you can easily keep your gear in order.

It also has lots of external attachment points in case you run low on space, has an integrated cover for rain, and comes with a lifetime warranty… go on, you know you want to!
