Best GoPro For Skiing

Best For High Resolution

GoPro Hero 10 Black

GoPro HERO10 Black - Waterproof Action Camera with Front LCD and Touch Rear Screens, 5.3K60 Ultra HD Video, 23MP Photos, 1080p Live Streaming, Webcam, Stabilization

The GoPro Hero 10 Black is one of the newest GoPro cameras on the market. This means it has some of the best camera settings of all the GoPro action cameras but it does come with some issues you need to be aware of too.

Let’s start with the good. This GoPro action camera comes with the ability to record the highest video quality of all GoPro cameras. It records at a 5.3k resolution at 60 frames per second, which is pretty incredible.

Add to this the HyperSmooth 4.0 built-in image stabilization and you will be able to capture the smoothest high-resolution videos possible while skiing down a mountain.

This GoPro Hero also comes with a G2 processor making it much faster than previous GoPro cameras and a lot easier to use.

It is also great for taking photos, is waterproof to 10 meters, and is shockproof in case you fall off your skis.

You can also use the helmet mount to add it to your ski helmet with ease and it comes with all the standard features such as an LCD touch screen, voice control, WiFi, Bluetooth, and more.

The main issue with this GoPro Hero action camera is that when you shoot in 5.3K at 60 fps, the battery dies very quickly and the camera can shut down due to overheating. This means carrying extra batteries is necessary for longer sessions.

Pros

  • Incredibly sharp footage
  • The best image stabilization
  • Removes the shakes from skiing
  • Very fast processing
  • Super tough and waterproof to 10 meters
  • Multiple fps and resolution options
  • WiFi/bluetooth to upload photos quickly

Cons

  • Poor battery life
  • Can overheat

Product Information

  • Weight: 1 lb
  • Dimensions: 3.2 x 4.8 x 9.4 inches
  • Max Resolution: 5.3K at 60 fps
  • Frame Rate: 60/120/240

Best For 360 Recording

GoPro MAX - Waterproof 360

GoPro MAX — Waterproof 360 + Traditional Camera with Touch Screen Spherical 5.6K30 HD Video 16.6MP 360 Photos 1080p Live Streaming Stabilization

The GoPro MAX – Waterproof 360 is another of the newer GoPro cameras on the market and it has some amazing features that no GoPro Hero action camera has.

The GoPro MAX has multiple lenses that allow it to record a 360-degree video. This means you can capture the entire scene as you are skiing down a mountain. It also comes with 360-degree mics so you can create videos with 360-degree audio too.

The GoPro Max video quality in 360 mode is awesome with a video resolution of 5.6K at 30 fps. This means you can make great videos, and even out of 360 mode too.

When it comes to great photos, the GoPro Max Action Camera will shoot 270-degree panoramic photos with auto horizon straightening. But, it will not take a regular photo very well at all.

The advanced features are pretty incredible, seeing the 360 videos you record on this action camera is very difficult, and editing them is even harder. You will have to download new software, and it takes ages to work.

The video stabilization on this action camera is great but not so great in 360 mode which reduces the video quality overall. Also, it can overheat in the 360 mode too.

Overall, if you want to shoot a 360 video, this is the only and best GoPro to do it with. But, it is expensive and a hassle, so be sure you really want it.

Pros

  • Ok battery life
  • Can record a 360-degree video
  • 360 audio with multiple mics
  • 270-degree panoramic photos
  • MAX HyperSmooth stabilization for smooth footage
  • Four digital lenses to choose from
  • Great video resolution
  • East to mount to a ski helmet
  • Voice command on/off

Cons

  • Overheats on 360 mode
  • Not good for normal photos
  • Seeing your 360 videos is a nightmare
  • Stabilization in 360 mode isn’t so great
  • Expensive

Product Information

  • Weight: 1.1 lbs
  • Dimensions: 9.88 x 5.28 x 3.15 inches
  • Max Resolution: 5.6K at 30 fps
  • Frame Rate: 30/60/50
  • Battery Life: 78 mins
  • Waterproofing: 5 meters
  • Video Stabilization: MAX HyperSmooth

Best Allrounder & Best On A Budget

GoPro Hero8 Black

GoPro HERO8 Black + Lanyard - E-Commerce Packaging - Waterproof Digital Action Camera with Touch Screen 4K HD Video 12MP Photos Live Streaming Stabilization

The GoPro Hero8 Black is the ultimate of all the GoPro Hero cameras for anyone who wants a more affordable option that will still record footage and photos to an awesome quality.

This small camera is an excellent action cam with slow motion, a wide-angle lens, wi-fi connectivity, and all the other extremely important features that come with the GoPro build quality.

With the GoPro Hero8 Black, you can record in 4K video at 60fps which is amazing video resolution for the price. This action cam also takes great pictures with auto horizon leveling, has solid image stabilization, and the battery life is excellent as well.

The GoPro Hero8 Black is also much more improved than the previous models and it might not have the new features of the newer models, but it has almost no flaws compared to them.

The battery life is much longer, and it doesn’t bug out, overheat, or anything else. This makes it much more reliable than the newer GoPro Hero Models.

Its only issue is that it gets a bit hot in 4k video recording but doesn’t shut down.

Pros

  • Durable build and solid waterproofing
  • More affordable than other options
  • Excellent 4k video quality
  • Solid battery life
  • Great image stabilization
  • Works well for videos and photos
  • Solid wind wilting on the audio

GoPro Hero7 Black

GoPro HERO7 Black - E-Commerce Packaging - Waterproof Digital Action Camera with Touch Screen 4K HD Video 12MP Photos Live Streaming Stabilization

The GoPro Hero7 Black is the oldest GoPro Hero feature and is oddly enough, more expensive than the Hero 8 Black which is its updated version. This makes buying the Hero7 a little obsolete since the better Hero 8 is cheaper.

But, this is still a great GoPro for skiing as this camera has a max video resolution of 4K @ 30 fps with HyperSmooth EIS stabilization. Recording awesome videos is very doable with these great features.

You can also take great pictures with this camera on the slopes, use slo-mo mode, time-lapse, GPS, and it is just as water resistant as the others. It will survive the slopes with ease!

What makes these action cameras a little worse than the others is that the voice command is not very reliable and the touch screen can be a bit unresponsive. Two features that when not working, make life a bit of a pain.

Pros

  • High quality video recording
  • Capture footage smoothly on the slopes
  • Great image stabilization
  • Better battery life than others
  • Great waterproofing and shock-proofing
  • Built in GPS and time lapse video mode
  • Takes excellent photos

Cons

  • Oddly more expensive than new models
  • Touch screen can be unresponsive
  • Voice command isn’t reliable

Product Information

  • Weight: 1lb
  • Dimensions: 2.4 x 1.3 x 1.8 inches
  • Max Resolution: 4K @ 30 fps
  • Frame Rate: 60/240
  • Battery Life: 90 mins
  • Waterproofing: 10 meters
  • Video Stabilization: HyperSmooth EIS

GoPro Hero5 Session

GoPro Hero5 Session

It might surprise you to hear that the GoPro Hero5 Session is the most expensive of all the GoPros featured. It comes with way fewer and worse features than the others but it is the smallest of all the action cameras.

This GoPro action camera is tiny and weighs just 4.5 ounces, making it portable as hell and easy to mount to your ski helmet, as it will take up barely any space at all.

With this GoPro, you can shoot 4K video at 30 fps with solid video stabilization and create great films of skiing on the slopes. But, the resolutions are much lower than the other action cameras and the stabilization isn’t as good either, but shaky movements will be reduced a bit.

Another great thing about this GoPro is that you can take great pictures with it too. But, it doesn’t come with an LCD screen since it is so small, meaning you can not review them at the moment and will have to download them to your phone via the app.

Overall, the build quality and the camera’s ability to handle action sports are excellent. But, being almost double the price of the newest GoPro Hero 10, it is not really worth the money in my eyes.

Pros

  • Incredibly small, compact, and light
  • Records awesome video quality
  • Great image stabilization
  • Compact mounting to a ski helmet
  • Takes good photos

Cons

  • More expensive than all the others
  • No LCD screen to review footage
  • Image stabilization isn’t as great as others

Product Information

  • Weight: 4.5 ounces
  • Dimensions: 1.43 x 1.5 x 1.5 inches
  • Max Resolution: 4K at 30 fps
  • Frame Rate: 30/60/240
  • Battery Life: Up to 2 hours
  • Waterproofing: 10 meters
  • Video Stabilization: Yes, not HyperSmooth

What To Look For In The Best GoPro For Skiing

Considering we are looking at the Best GoPros for skiing and no GoPro alternatives, there are a lot of GoPro settings and features that are the same across all of the mirrorless cameras.

So, let’s look at the key things that differ across the cameras so that you can decide which one is best for you.

Maximum Filming Resolution

You will have noticed that each GoPro’s filming resolution differs across all the models. It ranges from 5.3K at 60 fps with the Hero 10 Black to 4k at 30 fps on the Hero 5 Session.

If you are making films for marketing purposes or for actual films, then you will need a camera with the highest resolution possible. But, with higher resolutions come higher prices, lower battery life, and more errors like overheating. So you will have to deal with that!

The internet only offers 1080p and is slowly moving to 4k video but it isn’t there yet, so maybe super high resolutions aren’t quite worth it if it’s just for holiday videos and not professional use.

Maximum Frame Rates

If you are using your GoPro for professional purposes, then frame rates are going to matter to you. The higher the frame rate, the more frames in your footage and thus the more you can manipulate the footage in editing.

You will be able to freeze footage and grab pictures, create slow-mo parts, and lots more. Basically, the higher the frame rate, the more you can do with your footage in editing.

But, higher frame rates come with higher prices and again, if your footage isn’t for professional use, then it might not be worth paying the extra prices.

Battery Life

If your battery dies on the slopes, your camera is pretty much useless. Luckily, almost all the GoPros featured have a removable battery so when they die on the slopes you can slot in a new fresh one, and put the dead one in a portable charger.

Be aware that the higher the resolution and frame rate, the lower the battery life and in some cases, a battery can last less than 40 mins of recording. This is very much the case with the newer models.

Older models like the Hero 8 Black might record in lower resolutions and frame rates but their battery life is a lot longer.

Picture Quality

While GoPros are mainly designed for videos, being able to take great pictures with them is still important. Most of the GoPros take awesome pictures but the GoPro Max 360 does not so be sure to check the model you are looking at buying does what you want it to.

Video Stabilization

Skiing or snowboarding is not a smooth experience for a camera. If you want your videos to look any good, then some excellent Video Stabilization is required.

The newer the GoPro the better the stabilization and the smoother the footage. All GoPros from Hero 7 upwards come with HyperSmooth which is excellent and more than good enough for pro videos.

LCD Touchscreen

Having an LCD touchscreen is super handy as you can see what you are recording. Plus, you can review and delete footage on the camera on the go so your SD card doesn’t fill up with nonsense.

Waterproof & Shockproof

Skiing and snowboarding with a camera means it will end up hitting the snow at some point. Luckily, every GoPro camera is both shockproof and waterproof, making them perfect for skiing.

But, you should be aware that the GoPro Hero 8 Black camera and new models after it handle shock a lot better than the previous models.

Connectivity

All the GoPros features come with WiFi and/or Bluetooth but some will even let you do live streams to the internet.

If you are a pro skier, boarder, or alpinist, you might want to be able to send out some live videos. Check the connectivity of each GoPro so it matches what you want and need!

Our Favorite GoPros For Skiing

Best For Video Quality

The best GoPro For skiing if you are after the best video resolution possible is the GoPro Hero 10 Black. The ability to record 5.3K video at 60 fps is something no other GoPro comes with and it also comes with the best video stabilization of all the GoPros too.

In addition, all the features you could ask for are on this almost perfect action camera. But, you have to bear in mind the low battery life and the fact it overheats when recording at its highest resolution.

Best For 360 Recording

The GoPro MAX – Waterproof 360 is the best GoPro for skiing if you want to record 360-degree videos with 360-degree sound. This is no other camera with these GoPro settings and there is nothing quite like being able to share a 360-degree video of skiing on the slopes.

You can record in 360 or Hero mode with 5.6K video at 30 fps with awesome stabilization and take perfect 270-degree pano shots as well.

But, being able to shoot in 360 is no easy task once you have the footage. Downloading, editing, and showing people your 360 videos is a horrible task. Plus, the GoPro does overheat and runs low on battery quickly in 360 modes.

Overall, what makes this the best action camera is how reliable it is. You won’t miss any shots, it will always work, and it still takes great-quality footage. If you aren’t looking for hassle or TV quality, then this is the best GoPro to go for!
