DJI Mavic Pro – Extra LED Light Options

As you probably know by now, the Mavic Pro comes with a couple of nice red LEDs on the front two arms, as well as a flashing LED on the back.

And although they are not bad at helping locate your drone during the day (or at night) you actually lose sight of your drone pretty quickly. At least, that is what I find.

A minute into any flight, when the drone has a decent distance from me, I almost always have no clue where it is.

That is why adding a couple of extra bright LEDs to your Mavic Pro might just be a good idea, right? Even during the day.

And at night? It helps you avoid collisions, spot your drone, land more easily, etc.

Mavic Pro Night Flight with LEDs

Also, be aware that if you are flying commercially in the US as well as having your 107 certifications you will need a night waiver to fly at night. Otherwise, you are restricted between dusk and dawn.

That does not apply to hobbyists in the USA as far as I understand.

As for exact light requirements for hobbyists, you would have to contact the aviation authorities in your area.

LED Strobes

A flashing strobe light is one of the easiest things to see. As you probably know, the human eye is geared towards detecting motion – and the strobe works well with that by flashing. The following are some of the flashing/strobe options you have for the Mavic:

Firehouse Technology LED White Strobe Light

The Firehouse lights are insanely bright because they use a CREE LED.

They are also very small so can be mounted almost anywhere on your Mavic (top, bottom, arms, etc).

The package includes a USB cable for charging (1 hour) so you won’t need a power source on the drone. They claim the LED runs for 4-5 hours on the built-in LiPo battery, so you will rarely need to charge it when out flying.

They also throw in some 3M tape to help mount it, but once you know where you want it permanently you might want to use some glue.

The only major downside I can see with this LED is that the electronics are visible (although covered with clear plastic) so it is not the most attractive thing you can stick on your drone. But, for the sheer brightness of the LED it will be worth it when you can see your drone for miles!

Toogod Drone Strobe Light

The Toogod Strobe is a little different from the Firehouse one above. It is a long slim light measuring 3.1 x 0.6 inches.

It can be mounted on a velcro strip they provide which sticks to your drone.

It has a bunch of modes such as strobe or solid light, and red or white light (and combinations of those – ie white strobe). 5 in total.

It is also charged via a USB cable and runs for about 5 hours.

ThorFire Ultra Bright Bike Light

Not an LED specifically designed for a drone, but potentially a great solution anyway. I have seen it mentioned in a few forum posts from people so I thought I would mention it.

This LED strip light attaches via a hook system so could be attached to the arms of your Mavic Pro quite easily.

It is also charged externally via USB so can be independently mounted and left on the drone. Or, because it is easy to remove, taken off when you don’t need it.

Light most bike lights these days, it comes with strobe and solid light functions so can easily be used to help locate your drone at night.

LED Lamps

RCstyle Night Cruise LED Lamp

If you are after a lamp to just add more light around/in front of your drone then this lamp is a good buy.

It comes with a dedicated holder that helps clip it onto the front of the Mavic Pro, without the need for glue, velcro, or any of that other fuss most LEDs come with.

Some reviewers on Amazon have complained about the fit of the light in the holder, but most are satisfied.

Personally, I would just add a strobe if you want to see your drone at twilight or night, but this LED lamp is not a bad solution either

Landing Gear / LED Set

Another option for those wanting forward-facing LED lights on your drone, this landing gear light option helps solve two problems.

The Mavic Pro sits quite low to the ground which makes it hard to take off in grass or on rough surfaces, as the blades tend to hit things. You can get specific landing gear for your drone, but this set does that and adds lights too.

It adds landing gear to the two front legs and then a clip to the back with the lights. So, the lights sit at the back, kind of below the drone and almost at the back end.

So there you have it. Those are the four decent options I have found online via forums or Amazon reviews. If you have other suggestions feel free to get in touch as I am always on the lookout for better Mavic Pro Accessories.
