WOW.
Those are my first words that entered my mind after we had digested our food, and thoughts, last night at this sensational new restaurant from Matt Sinclair – Sum Yung Guys on Sunshine Beach not far from Noosa.

Ok, before we go any further, I have to admit something. I am a huge fan of Matt Sinclair. Having watched the 60+ episodes of Masterchef in 2016, and backing Matt all the way as the winner, how could I not be. (alright, he was only runner-up, but still, it was close, and he is an amazing cook).
His hard-working attitude combined with amazing taste combinations had me salivating from my couch all the way from Switzerland. Yes, I am an Aussie who loves Masterchef, but I live far away in the choc-filled land of mountains in Europe.
So, when I was visiting my sister in Maroochydore this weekend, she surprised me with a trip to Matt’s new restaurant with the fun play on words – Sum Yung Guys.
Oh what a treat!
We decided to order a huge range of dishes to ensure we got to try as many as possible. And even my 9-year-old niece, who obviously is not up for the more complex tasting dishes, was soon ordering seconds of her Thai street food pork skewers! She even went back with my parents a month later. (They too loved it).
But what about us? What taste bud caressing goodies did we have?
We started with the Mandarin-cured swordfish, which was a Thai curry taste bomb – without the actual curry sauce. It was simply cured fish with a curry coating, but tasted like I had just had a whole curry! Mind. Blown!

Next, the sweet and sour pork was a mouth watering pork belly bonanza, complete with a sickly sweet pineapple ring on the bottom.
We also indulged in a small plate of spicy, sticky Korean wings which were to die for! (although a little on the spicy side, which I love, but is not for everyone).

The dumplings were delish, but the finale, for us, was the Morton Bay bugs in an insane broth with a depth of flavour and spice I have rarely had anywhere on my travels around the globe.
DO NOT pass this one by. It is an absolute treat, even though it is on the pricey side! (Bugs are never cheap, right?).

Of course, no dish is complete without trying a few desserts, and as sweet-lovers who struggle to say no to sugar, my sis, brother-in-law and I shared the two we loved the sounds of:
Chocolate mousse with passion fruit crumble with black sesame crackers – OMG! Check it out…

And the banana cake soaked in salty caramel with homemade vanilla ice cream – Matt, I beg you, please give me the recipe! I would have had two if I could fit more in.
We left the restaurant with stuffed bellies, smiles on our faces and me with a raving review to write!
Of course, as a Masterchef groupie and huge fan of Matt’s I could not have left without a quick photo of the chef. And being the humble and friendly chap that he is, Matt was more than happy to oblige, complete with a quick chat about the awesome food!
If you are anywhere around the Sunshine Coast or Noosa and fancy a spot of Asian Fusion cooking that does not cost a bomb (but rivals some of the best in the area according to my sister) pop into Sum Yung Guys.
Don’t forget to reserve because this place is not going to be a hidden gem for long (it was already packed when we got there).
