Why Are Flights To St Lucia So Expensive? (2023 Update)

Flights to China and all around the world have become super expensive in 2023.

There are a variety of reasons why flight prices have increased, especially to China.

Below I will explain the sky-high prices you are seeing and we can see whether they are ever going to come down.

I just did a search on United Airlines for San Fran to Shanghai and it was $3700 for an economy seat! What is going on!

Why are flights to St Lucia so expensive?

  • Supply & demand – there are fewer flights available
  • The flight times are long adding to fuel costs
  • Local labor costs add to flight prices
  • Seasonality can increase prices at peak times

Limited Infrastructure

St. Lucia’s primary international airport is Hewanorra International Airport (UVF). This airport has a very limited capacity compared to most other airports.

This means that there are fewer flights that can land on any one day which ultimately leads to higher prices because of lower competition.

High Demand

St. Lucia is a popular tourist destination for honeymooners and luxury travelers. This unusually high demand, coupled with limited flight availability, can result in higher prices.

Again, it’s all about supply and demand. Simple economics. And St Lucia fails here in so many regards.

Seasonality

Another big factor that influences the prices of flights to St Lucia is seasonality. If you travel during peak travel times, such as during the winter months, you are always going to find the prices are significantly higher.

When travelers are seeking a warm escape, or during popular holidays or even local festivals, flight prices can spike.

On the other hand, this means that during the off-season, flights might be a bit cheaper. So, keep your eyes open!

Distance from Major Hubs

While St. Lucia isn’t exceptionally far from major U.S. cities, flights still require significant fuel, especially when compared to more regional destinations. And given that fuel costs are often a significant portion of an airline ticket’s price, this is going to add up.

Here are some flight times just to give you an example:

  • San Fransisco to St Lucia – 11 hours 15 minutes
  • San Fransisco to New York – 5 hours 15 minutes
  • San Fransisco to Vancouver – 2 hours 15 minutes
  • San Fransisco to Cancun – 5 hours 25 minutes

Route Inefficiencies

Not all flights to St. Lucia are direct. Depending on where you’re flying from, you might have to take connecting flights, which can add to the cost.

So, for example, these airports have direct flights:

  • Miami (MIA)
  • New York (JFK)
  • Boston (BOS)
  • Philadelphia (PHL)
  • Charlotte (CLT)
  • Atlanta (ATL)
  • Chicago (ORD)

But a place like San Francisco does not. This could mean that the price of a flight might cost you more, even if the flight time is less.

Taxes and Fees

Island nations and territories often impose higher airport and tourism taxes, which can significantly increase the cost of a flight. However, in this case, at only $13 for every departing passenger, this is likely not a big contributing factor to the price.

Economic Factors

The cost of living and doing business in island nations can be high. Everything from fuel to food often has to be imported into the country. This is either done by ship or air, but either way, it’s not cheap.

What this means for prices of flights is that operational costs for airlines increase and that has to be passed on to you.
