Can You Bring A Hydroflask On A Plane? (Read This Guide)

If you’re someone who brings a water bottle everywhere, you’ve probably wondered if you’re allowed to bring it on trips when you fly somewhere. And if that is the case, you’re most definitely in the right place because this guide will tell you all you need to know about flying with Hydro Flasks (and other bottles)!

There are many advantages to bringing your own bottle on a trip. For one, you don’t have to waste money on plastic bottles – you can just refill them at the hotel and you’re set for the day. There’s also the benefit of not producing excess plastic waste, which is my main motivation for carrying a reusable water bottle everywhere!

Are Hydroflasks Allowed in Carry-On Bags?

Hydroflasks are allowed in carry-on bags, as long as they do not have a drop of liquid inside. And the same goes for all other water bottles, whether you have an insulated stainless steel water bottle, a glass bottle, a classic thermos, or a reusable plastic bottle. You can bring them on a plane, but they have to be empty.

It’s worth noting that there are no restrictions on the materials of water bottles, so it doesn’t matter which brand you’re carrying.

Are Hydroflasks Allowed in Checked Bags?

Yes, hydro flask bottles are allowed in checked bags, and the same goes for all other water bottles. Also, if you’re packing your bottle in checked luggage, it doesn’t matter whether you have a full or an empty water bottle. There are no restrictions for liquids in checked luggage, so you can even pack a full water bottle if you want.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend packing your water bottle in a checked bag, mostly because then you can’t access it after you’ve dropped off your bags. If you want something to drink at the airport or a water bottle to bring on a plane, you’ll have to buy one at the airport, which kind of defeats the purpose of bringing a reusable water bottle with you in the first place.

Can you take an empty Hydro flask on a plane?

Yes, you can take an empty Hydroflask on a plane. Empty water bottles are allowed in carry-on luggage, and you don’t even have to pack them separately or take them out at the security checkpoint. You can let your empty bottles chill in your luggage while you’re going through metal detectors, and once you’ve gotten through security, you can fill them up with a beverage of your choice.

Can you fill your Hydroflask at the airport or on the plane?

You can absolutely fill your Hydroflask at the airport, provided that you do it after you’ve passed security. TSA (Transportation Security Administration) doesn’t allow any liquids in packaging of more than 100 ml in a carry-on bag, so you won’t be able to pass through security with a full HydroFlask, even if it’s just water inside it.

But once you’re through security and you have access to the water dispenser, you can absolutely fill up the flask and take it on the plane. Just make sure to find a water dispenser, or a tap that’s safe for drinking – don’t fill your flask in the bathroom because that water is probably not the safest to drink.

You can also refill the bottle on a plane, but I don’t see the point in doing it. Don’t do it in the plane bathroom because that’s absolutely not safe to drink. You’d have to buy a bottle of water on board, which kind of defeats the purpose of carrying reusable water bottles, so just do it while you’re still at the airport.

What size of Hydroflask can you bring on a plane?

You can bring a hydro flask of any size you want. There’s really no restriction on the size of the water bottle – the only thing that matters is that it’s empty. I would suggest that you don’t go overboard with the size of your hydro flask bottle, simply because it could end up taking up a lot of space in your carry-on luggage.

Also, keep in mind that if you get a bottle that fits two liters, you will have to carry that everywhere even when it’s full. That’s a heavy item to carry around for hours, and it’s just not practical, especially if you’re in a foreign city and you’re walking around a lot.

Can you bring a Yeti cup or a Thermos flask on a plane?

Empty hydro flasks, yeti cups, and thermo flasks are allowed on airplanes. It doesn’t matter which brand you have, it doesn’t matter if it’s a stainless steel bottle or a glass water bottle, and it definitely doesn’t matter what size the bottle is. I’ve said it a few times and I’ll say it again – as long as the bottle is empty when you’re at the security checkpoint, you’re good.

Will Hydroflask and other metal flasks explode on a plane?

No, your water bottles will not explore on airplanes. Sure, the pressure changes once you’re at a higher altitude in an airplane, but the worst that can happen is that a few drops of water leak while you are opening it. And you can easily avoid that if you don’t fill the bottle to the brim, and if you open the water bottle slowly and carefully. Opening your water bottle slowly allows the extra pressure to release, which minimizes the chances of water (or whatever drink is inside) spilling on you.

It’s the same thing with glass bottles – glass doesn’t explode under pressure, and if you find your glass bottle broken after the flight, it’s due to physical damage in the luggage.

One thing to note is that you should be extra careful with water bottles that have a straw or even one of those flip-up mouthpieces. Water is likely to leak through the straw or the mouthpiece if you don’t release the pressure first, but you can prevent this by opening the lid gently before drinking from the bottle.
