Best eSIM For Guatemala (Cheaper Data Plans)

Having internet access while you’re in Guatemala is essential for a thorough exploration of the country.

You don’t even have to spend a fortune on data roaming because you can buy an affordable local eSIM and have network coverage everywhere. Guatemala has excellent network coverage with 5G internet access throughout most of the country, and an eSIM is significantly cheaper than data roaming.

At A Glance: Best eSIM For Guatemala

That’s why I’ve compiled this list of the best eSIM providers for Guatemala. It includes all the most popular global eSIM providers and compares their data plans for Guatemala, so you can easily find the eSIM plan that is the best fit for your travel itinerary!

ESIM Product Comparison

Nomad

Nomad is an eSIM provider that offers prepaid data plans for more than 165 countries all over the world. It has three different data plans for Guatemala:

  • 1 GB/7 Days for $25
  • 3 GB/30 Days for $40
  • 5 GB/30 Days for $45

The reason why Nomad’s Guatemala plans are so pricey is that they’re operated by Truphone. This is an international network operator that offers a fast and stable internet connection but tends to be expensive. Truphone eSIMs are significantly pricier than eSIMs which allow you to browse the internet on local networks, so Nomad isn’t one of my top three picks for Guatemala.

You’ll have an equally good experience on Claro or Tigo networks, and you’ll spend a lot less money. But if you’ve had excellent experiences with Truphone and you want to stick with Nomad, they’re definitely an option for a Guatemala eSIM.

Pros

  • Internet access through Truphone
  • Weekly and monthly options
  • Top-ups are available

Cons

  • Expensive

Best unlimited data esim for Guatemala

Holafly

Holafly is an eSIM provider best known for its unlimited data plans. Guatemala is no exception, and if you want to have unlimited data while visiting the country, a Holafly eSIM is your best option:

  • 5 Days for $29
  • 7 Days for $37
  • 10 Days for $44
  • 15 Days for $47
  • 20 Days for $59
  • 30 Days for $79

The data plans are a little expensive, but I think it’s a good value because you’re getting unlimited data. Also, a Holafly eSIM will let you connect to the Tigo network. You might not have 5G everywhere like you would with a Claro eSIM, but you’ll have a stable connection throughout Guatemala.

One downside of the Holafly eSIM is that data sharing is prohibited. You can access the internet only on the device that has the eSIM and it’s not possible to create a hotspot or use data tethering.

Pros

  • Unlimited data plans for Guatemala
  • Fast and stable internet connection
  • Easy to set up and activate
  • Good value for money

Cons

  • Data sharing is not allowed

Best eSIM for Guatemala

Airalo

Airalo is possibly the best eSIM provider for a Guatemala eSIM. It has only two plans for the country, but both plans are fairly priced and great value for money:

  • 1 GB/7 Days for $7.5
  • 3 GB/30 Days for $21

The reason why this is the best provider for Guatemala is because it offers access to both Tigo and Claro networks. That means you’ll have 5G internet almost everywhere in Guatemala, as well as a very stable connection.

The downside of choosing this provider is that you can’t pick up an eSIM with a very generous data allowance. At most, you can get 3 GB, and that can be used up rather quickly with 5G. But Airalo makes it easy to purchase top-ups, so if you run out of data you can just buy more either through their app or on the website. I recommend downloading the app because it allows you to monitor your data usage as well.

Pros

  • Great value for money
  • Access to two network providers
  • Weekly and monthly plans

Cons

  • The largest data allowance is 3GB

Best value for money

Maya Mobile

Maya Mobile is a great provider if you’re looking for monthly plans. All Maya Mobile eSIMs for Guatemala are valid for 30 days, whether you need a gigabyte or unlimited data:

  • 1 GB/30 Days for $8
  • 3 GB/30 Days for $17
  • 5 GB/30 Days for $29
  • 10 GB/30 Days for $58
  • Unlimited Data / 30 Days for $129 (LatAm+)

The 1 GB plan is only $0.5 more expensive than the Airalo counterpart, but it’s valid for three additional weeks so it’s easily better value for money. The other data plans are even cheaper, plus Maya Mobile includes an unlimited data plan that will work in Guatemala.

It’s a regional data plan for Latin America, and it offers network coverage in a total of 16 countries. If you’re planning to travel to other countries in addition to Guatemala, the regional plan is definitely worth considering. Especially if you’re traveling with others and you can split the cost of the eSIM; Maya Mobile allows data sharing, so you can easily create a hotspot and share your connection with other travelers.

The Maya Mobile eSIM for Guatemala connects to the Tigo network. It’s the second-best operator in the country, right after Claro.

Pros

  • Great value for money
  • Unlimited data plan with regional coverage
  • Cheapest 30-day plans for Guatemala
  • Data sharing is allowed

Cons

  • Access to just one network operator in Guatemala

Alosim

Alosim is a popular eSIM provider with options for more than 170 countries in the world. It has a couple of good eSIM plans for Guatemala:

  • 1 GB/7 Days for $7.5
  • 3 GB/30 Days for $21

As you can see, the plans are almost identical to what Airalo offers, so they’re good value for money. However, I prefer the Airalo eSIM plans because of network coverage; Alosim offers access only to the Tigo network, whereas Airalo lets you connect to Claro as well.

Alosim makes it very easy to top-up your plan if you run out of data, so you can keep using the eSIM as long as you need it. Top-ups also extend the validity period, but the eSIM will stay activated only as long as there’s data on it.

Pros

  • Good value for money
  • Weekly and monthly eSIM plans
  • Easy activation and top-ups

Cons

  • No access to the best network operator in Guatemala

BNESIM

BNESIM is an interesting eSIM provider. It has eSIMs and SIM cards for most countries in the world, and sometimes it’s the best option out of the bunch. Other times, a BNESIM eSIM can cost as much as the plane ticket to your destination, which is unfortunately the case with Guatemala:

One-Time Plans:

  • 1 GB for 41.4€
  • 3 GB for 120.5€
  • 5 GB for 194.6€

Daily Plans:

  • 500 MB for 13.16€
  • 1 GB for 28.98€
  • 3 GB for 84.35€

Monthly Plans:

  • 3 GB for 78.33€
  • 5 GB for 126.49€
  • 10 GB for 242.19€

BNESIM is the only provider to offer one-time, daily, and monthly plans. One-time plans are the most expensive because they expire only after you’ve used up all the data, while monthly plans are the cheapest because you have 30 days to use up all your data.

All of these data plans will let you browse the internet on the Claro network, which is the best provider in the country. But I think the BNESIM eSIMs are way too expensive and not worth the money, especially when other providers offer a similar service but for a fraction of the total price.

Pros

  • Choose between one-time, daily, and monthly data plans
  • Access to the Claro network
  • Easy top-ups with the BNESIM app

Cons

  • Very expensive

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a type of digital SIM card that’s embedded into your smartphone. It has the exact same functionality as a physical SIM card, but instead of having to insert that tiny piece of plastic into your phone, you’ll need to download an eSIM data plan.

The eSIM is becoming the industry standard and many phones these days are being released without support for a physical SIM card.

  • It’s cheaper than data roaming

  • Purchase the eSIM before the trip and activate it when you arrive

Best Mobile Provider for Guatemala

The overall best mobile provider in Guatemala is Claro, according to Opensignal’s research. It offers the fastest internet and the widest 5G coverage. However, Tigo is the most consistent mobile operator, especially for low-performance usage like web browsing and SD video.

In general, either of these two mobile providers should offer a stable and fast internet connection in Guatemala. Claro is slightly better in terms of coverage and speed, so look for a Claro eSIM if you need reliable and super-fast internet for your trip.

eSIM Compatible Phones

Although eSIMs are slowly but surely becoming the industry standard, they’re still not included in every single smartphone out there. Most flagship devices manufactured in the 2020s have eSIM support, so the latest phones from Google, Apple, and Samsung. But a few other manufacturers have also included eSIM in their devices, and you can see a detailed list of all eSIM-compatible phones right here.

If you want to quickly check whether your personal smartphone has eSIM support, just dial *#06# and look for an EID number.
