Materials & Durability

YETI Lowlands Blanket, Multi-Use Blanket with Travel Bag, Smoke Blue

Blanket Materials

The Lowlands blanket from Yeti features a two-layer construction The top layer is made from 65% Polyester and 35% Rayon, so it’s softer than the bottom layer. It’s more comfortable out of the two layers and designed so that it feels soft when you’re sitting on it. The bottom layer is made entirely from polyester and it is 100% waterproof.

Because of the two-layer construction, it’s important that you always place the waterproof layer at the bottom, especially if you’re using it on wet ground. Also, the top layer is much softer and more comfortable and it feels better against the skin.

The blanket is also designed to repel dirt and pet hair, so it shouldn’t be too hard to keep clean. In a way, it’s perfect for dog owners because it manages to repel dog hair pretty well. Also, you can machine wash the entire blanket, so it’s great for dealing with wet and muddy dogs!

In terms of durability, there’s certainly room for improvement with the Yeti Lowlands blanket. Don’t get me wrong – the craftsmanship is great and with normal use, this blanket should last you for years. If you take good care of the Yeti Lowlands blanket, it should be good as new for quite a while.

But it’s not puncture-resistant, so you should avoid using sharp objects near the blanket. Don’t place anything sharp on the blanket because it could damage the material. This also applies to pet teeth and nails so don’t let your pets scratch or bite the blanket.

There’s also no UV resistance in either layer of the Lowlands blanket. It might fade after prolonged sun exposure, but that will not impact its performance in any way. It’s also worth noting that the blanket is not flame retardant, but that’s not necessarily a downside. Sure, if any ember falls on the blanket the material will get damaged, but flame retardant blankets are usually treated with harsh chemicals that can sometimes be toxic.

The Yeti blanket might not be fireproof, but it doesn’t feature any harsh or toxic chemicals, so it’s safer and more comfortable, especially with kids and pets. That also makes it more suitable for people with sensitive skin, particularly if you’re going to use the blanket in warmer weather.

Insulation And Waterproofing

YETI Lowlands Blanket, Multi-Use Blanket with Travel Bag, Smoke Blue

The Yeti Lowlands Blanket is both insulated and waterproof, which makes it suitable for use in changing weather conditions. Only one side of the blanket is entirely waterproof, so you should only expose that side to the elements.

Make sure that you’re always placing the blanket on wet ground with the waterproof side down, and if you’re feeling chilly and you want to cozy up with the blanket, turn it so that the top layer is next to your skin.

The blanket is also padded and insulated for ultimate comfort. It features synthetic insulation, which means that it performs equally well in dry and wet weather. That’s one major advantage of synthetic insulation – it is capable of retaining warmth even when it gets wet, whereas down insulation clumps and loses its insulating capabilities.

Size & Weight

YETI Lowlands Blanket, Multi-Use Blanket with Travel Bag, Smoke Blue

The Lowlands Blanket is a pretty good size for a picnic blanket. It measures 55” x 78” open, so it’s slightly bigger than most one-person blankets. It’s not quite as big as a two-person blanket, so keep that in mind if you’re looking for something to keep you warm during cold nights in the tent.

This Yeti blanket weighs 5.8 lbs, which is pretty heavy for a picnic blanket. The weight is the largest downside of the blanket because it’s noticeable, especially if you’re carrying the blanket in addition to a bunch of other gear.

For reference, the Rumpl blankets are nearly half the weight of this one. The exact weight depends on the insulation, but their heaviest two-person blanket (which is bigger than the Lowlands) weighs 3.7 lbs.

Because it’s a heavier blanket, it’s not exactly the most packable or portable option out of the bunch. However, it’s important to point out that the weight is specifically because of the synthetic insulation.

A down blanket would be much lighter but it wouldn’t be quite as good in wet weather. It’s something to consider so you can purchase an appropriate picnic blanket, depending on which features you’re prioritizing.

Additional Features

Utility Loops

If you want to use the blanket as a ground cover or on the beach, you’ll be glad to know that it can be staked. The Lowlands Blanket has six utility loops on its edges, so you can easily anchor it in place. It’s worth noting that you’ll need to use your own stakes because none are included in the purchase of the Lowlands blanket.

The loops are also useful if you ever want to wear the blanket like a cape. You can use them to secure the blanket to your body so that it doesn’t fall off when you’re moving, but again you’ll need some sort of clip or string to tie the loops together.

Carry Bag

This blanket comes with a convenient carrying case for easy transport. It’s got a handle for easy carrying plus it’s water resistant so it will protect the blanket from the rain. The bag is also very useful for storage because it compresses the blanket nicely so that it doesn’t take up a lot of space when packed.

The Lowlands Blanket is machine washable, so it’s very easy to keep clean. You’re supposed to wash it with cold water only, so if there are any greasier stains on the blanket, you’ll have to try and get them out by hand. On the other hand, the Yeti blanket is also dryer-safe but you need to tumble-dry it at a low temperature.

One thing to note is that you’re not supposed to use fabric softener when washing this blanket. Dry cleaning and ironing should also be avoided and generally anything that includes higher temperatures because that could damage the blanket materials.

Value For Money

At some $200, the Yeti Lowlands blanket is a pricey item. The blanket is made from high-quality materials and it performs very well in changing conditions, but does that justify the higher price point? It mostly depends on what you’re looking for.

If you’re specifically looking for a waterproof blanket that’s great for picnics or something that will help you transport wet and muddy dogs without ruining your car, it’s a great option. It has a lot of great features to justify the higher price point, but if you just want a high-quality outdoor blanket, you should check out some other options first.

Consider the Rumpl blankets if you’re looking for something cheaper. They start at some $99 for the basic one-person blanket and go up to $400 for special edition blankets. Rumpl blankets are generally cheaper and have some similar features to the Yeti Lowlands, but they don’t repel dirt or pet hair, so keep that in mind.

Should you get the Yeti Lowlands blanket? If you’re looking for a great picnic blanket and you’re fine with the price, then you should definitely consider it.

This is a waterproof and comfortable picnic blanket with insulation and padding. It performs well in changing weather conditions, it’s machine washable, and it repels both dirt and pet hair. The blanket is super easy to keep clean, it will keep you warm on chilly evenings, and you can have a picnic on wet ground without getting damp at all!

YETI Lowlands Blanket, Multi-Use Blanket with Travel Bag, Smoke Blue
  • DOUBLEDUTY COMFORT - Durable and waterproof on the outside, padded and insulated on the inside
  • HYDROBARRIER - The waterproof layer is immune to wet ground of any kind

But it’s quite heavy for a picnic blanket and it’s pretty expensive, so it’s certainly not the best option for everyone. If you need something lighter because you’re already used to carrying a lot of bulky gear, this probably isn’t the best blanket for you.

Also, if the Yeti blanket is outside your price range, you should know that there are lots of cheaper alternatives, and you can read more about them in our related posts!
